AgreedWould like us to take a flier on Bonar if we get Dow or LDU at 3 and Fogarty is gone. If we get Rayner I'd lean more conservatively. Bonar is a bit of x-factor and I'd back us to make him payoff.
Although if we get Rayner taking 2 x-factor types is a bit iffy.

Brett Anderson has Ed Richards to us at 10 now as well.
As I mentioned a few days ago a family member of Ed's said it was GWS, WB or Carlton that were keen. We have the first crack unless he slips to 30
That's more or less what I'm saying.I'd say one 'X-factor' type of player max.
We already have Charlie & Pickett who i would classify in that bracket. Arguably SPS as well and imo you don't actually want too many...need a balance of X-factor but also guys who are ultra-consistent and set up the play again and again, playing their role in the structure. These players allow the X-factor types to thrive.
Spot on BBWB would be my guess - getting a weird vibe out of that club.

Feels like we are getting Ed. I know almost nothing about him.... Apparently a bolter with amazing pace and excellent disposal at top speed. Sounds nice.
That seems a fairly unlikely choice to me. Why we would we go for a guy who plays half back rather than midfield/forward?

Not sure Williamson being a 2nd year player and Byrne being inexperienced is a good reason for getting Richards. He is a 1st year player with less experience. Docherty will be back in a year.
We do also have the new Irish recruit who will likely fill a similar role.
But that also being said with the premiership being won by a small forward line, do we need 3-4 small defenders in the best 22 every week?
I think the call on Richards would be if they see him as more than just a running HB which sounds possible.

Its likely that Pick3 will be a midfielder who can also go forward, we also have Pick 30 that can be used on a forward/ mid. We definitely need another running defender. We have Doc out, Simpson in his last year or two. We are stacked with talls in the backline but def lacking smalls.
We have recruited flankers in the past hoping they will transition to the midfield. It's not as easy as one might think.
Add to that Mullett who is likely a short-term option at most (2-3 years then depth, similar to Kerridge).
Simpson - gone in 2 years tops.
Docherty - future captain, has publically stated a desire to spend some time in the middle.
Byrne - has played 15 games in 3 seasons, love what he offers but he could end up another Sheehan-story.
Williamson - strong candidate moving forward, but also has the size and aggression to perform in the middle.
Mullett - stop-gap recruitment, if he becomes any more than that it'll will be a pleasant surprise.
McDaid - Cat B rookie, has never played AFL in his life?
That's 6 small defender types.
1 close to retirement.
1 genuine gun with 10 years ahead of him.
1 good prospect with an unfortunate injury record.
1 promising young 19yo who could play a role higher up the ground.
1 short-term DFA.
1 Hail Mary international prospect.
The three in bold are the ones we'd hope to lock in for the next 5-6 years while we make an play for #17. And really, none of them are blessed with exceptional pace. One's a general who can read the play, the other two are quality ball-users. There's absolutely room for a pacy left-footer who takes the game on and hits targets at full flight.
The more pertinent question is who else could still be on the board that we simply could not pass on?
Yes it just depends who is on the board.
I suspect LDU, Rayner, Dow, Cerra, Brayshaw, Stephenson , Naughton, Fogarty, Coffield to likely be gone. If that is the case who is really left?
Of the players likely to be left they all offer something we lack in. Running ability and elite kicking
Hunter - strong chance, outside run and kicking skills, can play HB and Mid
LOB - strong chance, we need outside run and kicking skills, can play HB and Wing
Richards - Speed , line breaking HB, great kicking can push to the wings
Match any of these players with LDU or Dow and we are looking good.
