2017 Draft - Pick 30

If Lachlan Fogarty was still on the board, then we'll be very lucky. I do like Callum Coleman-Jones, despite the fact we may not need another Ruck. I think he has enough tools to make it. Not as a forward though.

Gryan Miers has a lot of the Luke Dalhouse about him and would bring the tackling pressure we desperately need in our fwd line.

Prefer Garner (unlikely to still be there), Houlahan or Miers

Garner does have a ripper kick on him, ball absolutely fly's off his boot and he looks really smooth with the footy, but he just doesn't get enough ball and can go missing for big patches in games, was rated as a mid to late first rounder coming into the year, but no chance he goes that high on draft night.
IMO will probably still be there at pick 30, but I'd prefer Houlahan or Ling

Played as a defender in the Champs so thought more of someone who can play as a small defender who can run, find the ball and use it.

He can definitely do those things really well, although I'm not the biggest fan of his defensive work, he did spend a few weeks training with us last year, so SOS should know what he is capable of becoming and if he worth taking at pick 30.

I like the look of Charlie Ballard. Reminds me of Curnow, although he probably doesn't have the same development as Curnow at the same age.

Links up really nicely, but looks most comfortable leading up to the 50 and then is capable of delivering in.

Beat me to it. Takes the pressure off needing one of the kids to step up straight away, would he be an upgrade on graham though? Dunno what his leg speed is like

Was a quick half forward flanker in 2011 when first rookied. Has reinvented himself as an inside mid, tackling machine with scoreboard impact and 77% disposal which is elite for the position. Looks like a real bull.

I think SOS grabbed #30 to go for Sandover runner up Tim Kelly but I'd be happy with Schloithe the Sandover winner with #73.

We don't do mature aged recruits anywhere near enough for mine.

We traded for our mature recruits, and used draft picks on kids to build a large core group.

Wright, Rowe, Boekhorst, Kerridge and Gorringe are some that come to mind (mature as in missed draft and have at least a couple of State League seasons or were on another list first). Duigan was not so long ago. Lobbe too.

Happy to keep going with the kids at our draft picks, if Tim Kelly (or Liam Ryan) is there at #30 or another mature age player is there at #73 or for our rookie pick (like Alex SOS) then all is good.

I think 2018 might be our hump year. Deeper draft next year and likely a few retirements (White, Thomas, Rowe, Simpson), contracts coming to an end (Kerridge, Smedts) and time to cut the last of our driftwood (Boekhorst, Graham). 2018 we have our first round pick in a reportedly bonza draft and two second round picks if an early bid is made on a Ben SOS, Manton or the younger Hickmott.

But after that SOS might land a FA (Gaff, Lynch, etc), find another Williamson or 3 late in the draft, drafts a State League player or 2, or takes DFAs (Wright).

Obviously I wasn't suggesting we use one of our first 2 picks.

I don't see any of the examples you gave as being quite the same. All but Boekhorst were continuing on in the AFL system.

A player that acknowledges they were not ready as an 18 year old rookie and has set about becoming the best player they can be ever since ... he's like a new draftee with a clean slate. Boeky was never at this level in the WAFL.

Haiden Schloithe might be worth a shot. Could be our Menegola type developed midfielder.
Menegola was a pick 66. That should see a few revise where they think such mature-aged players should be drafted.

Anyone picking one before #40 is taking a serious risk with their list.
