Agree with all of that...Here is an interesting one for you RD. I wonder whether Bonar or even Stephenson might still be available at pick 16 because of concerns about, respectively, injury history and health?
There is a part of me that wants us to use pick 9 to wave the Stringer replacement trophy in the faces of Essendon and all the others. That is, D Fogarty or Bonar. Plus we have obviously a need for a versatile marking forward, someone who can play FF or on a flank, deep or high. If Fogarty or Bonar are gone, Sticky Fingers Murphy at 188cm and 85kg has caught my imagination and I don't think draft watchers will call it a reach by now.
Then there is another part of me wants us to use pick 9 on the best available genuine outside mid (pace & kicking skills) because we are a bit thin in that rank: Stephenson, Coffield, Clark all seem to meet that bill.
If we go the outside mid with 9, then I would like the club to mix it up a bit and go for the versatile marking forward with 16. But this is where it gets tricky. Murphy may be available but it thins out from there unless Balta is deemed to have the mobility to be such a forward. Your suggestion of McCartin is very interesting.
If we go the versatile marking forward with 9, then outside mids available are not quite as impressive as the ones around pick 9. L Fogarty looks good but is on the smaller side (not sure if that matters or counts for anything with a player who is selected to be an outside mid), O'Brien is a bit more robust and seems to be higher rated but his whole game videos are a mixed bag, I found - he looks great in one, in the other he has what looked to me a pretty ordinary game - clangers and hot potatos. Zac Bailey is an average kick.
When I did my mock draft the other day, I found myself taking D Fogarty and Bonar. It is not implausible that both could be available. But is that overdoing it?
I dont think both D.Fogarty & A.Bonar is overdoing it as I rate them both very highly... in fact I believe they may most likely both be gone by 9.
Both would eventually be Mids but only after earning their senior stripes for a year or two - Bonar as Fwd & Fogarty as a back
I do like the look of Murphy too.. but I honestly rate him 12+ so we may overlook at 9.. but I do much prefer him to Coffield...
Not that keen on talk of Naughton.. his kicking action made me grimace and I honestly believe Brander is a better prospect and more highly skilled.
You make a good point regarding combination of the player type for 9 & 16..
i.e. Mid Bull at 9, Outside Skill/Pressure or Aerial at 16..
Reason I mentioned Tom McCartin is I feel Dal might well see him as another Bont type reach and develop into Mid/Wing.. rather than current KP... his running is meant to be approaching elite after interrupted development.
He is is still to do Yr.12 next year so would be a slow burn.. but upside could be very high and would not be suprised if we drop a bombshell.
L.Fogarty will be gone by 16.. Bris would be assured to take at him at 15 if they take Raynor at 1...
Similarly LDU & Bonar are very close mates.. so wouldnt suprise to see Freo 2/5 combo to mitigate go home factor.
Stephensonis a very interesting one... I still think he'll be gone by 9.. but if he is available then I think he is too good to pass up.
I really hope Naughton is taken at 5/6, or Coffield at 6/7/8 as many seem to suggest so that a more 'preferred' player slips to 9..
Cant wait for next Friday....
Wish they did it earlier...
Also hope next year pick bidding is part of a televised draft on the back of trade week...
This is getting bigger every year and we will surely head down the NFL route of making it a primetime event..
