As soon as panels come into it the conversation just moves to perceptions of bias. Draft/ trades should be uncompromised and clubs should be given more by the afl to address the root problems, e.g: help to ensure facilities meet a minimum standard; money outside of salary cap for flights home x times per year; if player nominates to trade they must sign with whichever club offers the best deal etc..

How could we conjure up a 2nd top 6 draft choice this year? We'll win this week and end up with 2, ports pick (13) and 19. Would be nice to get another top 6 pick. Could we trade a future first round pick to a club who thinks they r on the way up around that 5-6 mark who in turn think we r anchored to the bottom 2 in 2018?

All those comments firstly ring alarm bells to me. It would be nice if a player stated , gee , i just love my footy and will do whatever it takes , to make it , in the AFL. So to answer your question.my suggestions are.

The draft is designed to let every club have a chance at the premiership. Greater protection is required for weaker clubs.

So

Increase the years from 2 to 3 that new recruits must spend at their new club.
AFL to give greater resources and flexibility in terms of money ,to employ better staff , training facilities and afl expertise to assist struggling clubs to provide better welfare units. Particularly poorer clubs.
Stipulate in unambiguous terms on contracts for new recuits that if they ,once recruited decide to want to leave ,that they will have to sit out of the AFL for a period of three years before being able to play at the elite level again. If found to be manipulating the draft regulations. This may hopefully cut out the lies. Or players Like SPS who are dumb enough to say to the media , prior to the draft ,they only want to play in melboure and their preference is club x. They will face immediate exclusion from the draft.
Have standard behavioural questions at all club interviews, not stupid irrelevant ones like what is 4x 8
Set up a independent review committee, that has power to determine and compel adequate compensation to clubs
Who may be given inferior picks for one of their players. This is with the go home five in mind. Example pick 4 2017 wants to go to another club. Other club only offers only pick 28 as they feel they hold the stronger position in the negotiations. The club that has the player currenly ,capitulates (gun to the head)as player states he will walk if no trade is done. Under this example ,the new review panel ,will compel the new club to give their 1st round pick and if their 1st round pick is say pick 11 then will be compelled to give more . This will force clubs who want to raid bottom clubs for nothing ,something to seriously consider before a formal offer is made. The panel's objective will be to protect the rights of struggling, bottom placed clubs ,so that all trades are conducted on a fair and level playing field.
Bands on potential recruits conducting behnd the scenes negotiations with clubs prior to a formal meeting held at afl headquarters by all 18 clubs prior to the daft. Breaches by clubs will face disqualification from the draft. This hopefully prevents stronger, wealthier clubs swaying young kids minds that their place to be is with them.
Restrictions on player managers signing up kids prior to this formal meeting.
This was all discussed last year when Ainsworth said he would be happy to come to Brisbane.

And then again earlier this year during the AFL/AFLPA contract negotiations. The AFLPA want freedom of movement for their members, and freedom to play for their club of choice. What you (and many of us at non AFL heartland clubs) want to see happen is never going to happen while the AFLPA acts stronger than the AFL.

If we were to take Paddy Dow at 2, could UDL be still there at 5 or 6 if we were able to secure a second pick in the top 6. We need to genuine mids and I think it's worth rolling the dice on us improving next year and securing an extra pick this year. Paddy Dow is marginally ahead of UDL at the moment on current form but I get the feeling UDL playing within himself a bit.

UDL reminds me of Ryan Griffin but with better skills and Paddy Dow has bit of danger about him. It's an exciting year to have top picks, would be great if we could conjure another top pick.

Dows highlights from the championships are pretty whelming. He's also quite small. Are draft watchers that confident he can translate his school form to AFL level.

Hypothetically if the Roos end up with pick 1 and drafted Dow I think Noble would happily select Rayner with pick 2 and back the club in. Sometimes rumours of potential homesickness are overblown. Last year there were big rumours that Florent and Scrimshaw did not want to leave Victoria, both have extended their contracts with the Swans and Suns respectively. In 2 years time the club as others have said are likely to have brand new, state of the art facilities and we should be moving up the ladder. We could be an attractive club to be at by then. The club will get a good gauge on Rayner from the interviews and also his testing at the combine so if we do select him I have complete trust in the clubs decision. We have drafted well as of late.

Paddy 184cm - Trent Cotchin 185cm. One of the biggest factors to indicate successful transition from the junior ranks to AFL is contested numbers to which Dow was one of the best in the national champs. Through his national champs he progressively got better and by the sounds of it this has continued. He isn't slow and also shows good agility in the contest. There are some small things to clean up but that what should be improved when he gets the AFL.

Agree, I like the look of LDU more than Dow. Just looks like such a smooth mover with good skills, clean hands and a good footy brain, reminds me a bit of a young Pendlebury. I feel like Dow has been slightly overrated. LDU the better long term prospect for me

He's TAC Cup games and Champs were good too. I think Dow will end up better than LDU, Rayner, Cerra etc.

I'd back the club in that situation.

Scrimshaw from my understanding, is likely to request a trade home. Despite extending.

He looks small though. Very underdeveloped. Will probably struggle for a couple of years until he really bulks up. Won't be breaking tackles like he does against the other kids.

Looks similar to Nathan Jones or maybe Rory Sloane.

Really nervous about the draft. We are likely to win this weekend and if Nth pick Dow (or give their 1st to GWS who pick Dow) then we would have to pick the 3rd best talent in the draft. They could draft Rayner but unless he extends in the first year like Berry then we will continually be thinking "will he or wont he" like Schache this year

There's a fair bit of love for Dow now on this board. While he is certainly up there, I feel him and LDU are being a bit overated.

I still think the best two players in the draft are Rayner and Stephenson, with Cerra next. I really hope whatever we do in the draft we just pick the best player available. If that's Rayner, then back our coaching and welfare team in and hope he stays. We can't be picking the 4th or 5th best player just because there's some doubt he'll leave after 2 seasons.

Midfielder Paddy Dow rockets up the charts in race for Pick 1 of 2017 AFL national draft

THE Brisbane Lions and North Melbourne might be playing for the No. 1 draft pick and the ‘Rayner Cup’ on Saturday, but it’s also possible, depending on where Pick 1 lands, that they will be contesting the ‘Dow Index’.

Bendigo Pioneers midfielder Paddy Dow has emerged as the principle rival to the Western Jets’ Cameron Rayner for the honour of being picked first in the national draft, and the choice of player may well hinge on which club owns that choice — not simply on Saturday night, but after the trading period.

The Lions, who are favourites against North, still view Rayner as the prospective first pick, but other clubs and recruiters have a preference for Dow, who has moved up the draft boards like a hot stock.

The Lions have indicated that they would be willing to trade their first pick — 1 or 2 — for what they deem to be an exceptional deal. It is less clear what the Kangaroos would do with Pick 1.

Dow enhanced his claims to be pick No. 1 on Saturday when he had 35 possessions, of which 21 were contested, and booted 2.2 in Bendigo’s loss to Gippsland Power in Ballarat — a performance that had some recruiters talking him up as the prospective first pick in the 2017 national draft.

If the first pick is a contest between Dow and Rayner — as some recruiters believe likely — then it offers a strong contrast.

Rayner is often likened to Melbourne’s young bull Christian Petracca and is viewed as a forward-midfielder with explosive, match-turning qualities. But there is a question mark on his endurance and whether he will ever develop enough of a tank to play full-time in the midfield.

Dow, conversely, is a genuine midfielder, without the same dynamism around goal or explosive qualities as Rayner.

If North ends up with Pick 1 then its pursuit of Dustin Martin will likely be irrelevant, since Martin is a free agent and, if he left Richmond, it would be because the Tigers are unwilling to match a stratospheric contract, such as a six or seven-year deal on $1.5 million.

GWS, which is more confident of retaining midfield star Josh Kelly on a two-year deal than previously, would likely receive Pick 1 from North if Kelly opted to leave GWS and nominated North, which has offered him a nine-year deal close to $10m.

Callum Twomey's latest top 5- http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-08-21/if-its-not-cam-rayner-then-who-goes-no1

Cameron Rayner
Midfielder/half-forward

Rayner became the favourite for the No.1 pick with his brilliant under-18 championships, when he tore through the carnival across half-forward and through the midfield. Rayner kicked 12 goals in Vic Metro's four games, averaged 18 disposals and impressed with his power, physicality and skills. He is a game breaker with his long kicking, overhead marking and presence around goal. The query from clubs is around Rayner's aerobic capacity and it is something he needs to improve, but he sits as the most exciting player in the draft. Had 28 disposals and kicked two goals in a very good outing for the Western Jets on the weekend.

Paddy Dow
Midfielder

It has been more of a slow burn for Dow, but he is hitting the end of the season in full swing. The Bendigo Pioneers midfielder had a day out on Sunday, when he gathered 35 disposals, six clearances, seven inside-50s and booted two goals. Dow has been a goalkicker throughout the year, and he's comfortable spending plenty of time pushing forward. He is tough, good by foot, has a real turn of pace that he's showing more and more, and he's been very consistent. There's not a lot of fuss about the way Dow plays but he just continues to pile on the very good games which sees him right near the top.

Luke Davies-Uniacke
Midfielder

The Dandenong Stingrays midfielder is a ball-winner who can also provide some outside dash and speed. He's best when fighting for the ball, digging it out and then bursting away. Davies-Uniacke is also capable of spending some time forward, where he has shown he can grab the ball in the air and provide a target. At his 187cm height he is one the bigger side for a midfielder, and he's had a good season. Had a brilliant start to the national carnival for Vic Country with a best-afield display before some quieter moments. Could be the best pure midfielder out there, which pushes his No.1 credentials.

Jarrod Brander
Key defender/forward

Brander stands as the leading key position player in the draft, particularly after the withdrawal of Will Sutherland. He hasn't had the same consistency to his game as the midfielders who are in this bracket, but can play at both ends of the ground. Brander, who was formerly a part of Greater Western Sydney's academy before its zone was realigned, played well on the weekend for the Pioneers in a forward post, taking nine marks, booting two goals and collecting 21 disposals. He is a good kick, can read the ball well in the air and has dominated games, but one of the midfielders looks more likely to take out the No.1 position.

Adam Cerra
Midfielder

A classy, smart and poised midfielder who makes things look easy. Cerra is a polished option and reasonably low risk as a likely early pick: he picks the right options, uses the ball well and can also kick goals. He doesn't have the same get-away burst or explosiveness which may hurt his No.1 chances in comparison to the other contenders. But he's clean and smart and never appears rushed. Cerra won't play again this season after having shoulder surgery recently.

Well, that's almost word for word of what Jake Niall said on AFL tonight.

What I took away from his report on Fox was that;

1) Brisbane view Rayner as the number 1 kid in the draft, while other clubs view Dow as the best kid. And he said that is from speaking to the clubs.

2) Brisbane will seriously consider trading their pick.

What I read in to this report if taken at face value, is that Brisbane isn't enamoured with the perceived top and talent in this years draft and may feel they can get a player of near equal capabilities in the later part of the top 10 or even in the latter part of the first round.

I wonder if they would trade our first pick for a 2018 first round pick.

I couldn't see them doing it briz, who do you trade it to? Who is/are the club/s that you see as highly likely bottom 3 next year? We could trade with a club that surges up the ladder.

IMO a top 3 pick in the hand is worth more than a possible top 3 pick next year.
