What are people's thoughts on our 2017 season in general?

For reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Collingwood_Football_Club_season

Best Wins: VS Geelong in Round 6, VS Melbourne Round 23 (Sweet revenge after being royally f*cked over on QB by the umpires).

Worst Losses: VS Carlton in Round 7 (a week after the brilliant win against Geelong) and vs Essendon in Round 16 (The worst performance and most miserable game to sit though in years for me).

Best Recruits: Will Hoskin-Elliot and Lynden Dunn.

Worst Recruits: Chris Mayne (Why?) and If if I had to pick another it'd be Wells, but he'd only just played nearly a full season at North the year before and we'd realistically hoped to get about 15 games out of him which would've been great.

Most Improved: Slim pickings here from looking at our list. Probably Maynard.

Least Progressed: Aish by a landslide. He had some really good performances in the back half of 2016 and looked to improve greatly in 2017. Very disappointing. Crisp was better in 2017 than 2016, but he was still disappointing after such a great debut year for us.

Rising Star: Does WHE count or does it have to be a first year player? If not then Callum Brown by default.

Best change of position: Reid forward was good for maybe 2 or 3 games. Crisp in defense looks pretty good.

Best individual performance: JDG against West Coast in Round 18. Adams had a couple of brilliant games as well but I can't remember who they were against.

Worst individual performance: I can't think of any in particular, but Fasolo, Moore, Smith, Crocker, Blair and Ramsay all had some absolute shockers.

Most significant injury: Treloar carrying a groin injury for how long? 6 weeks or so? and not being dropped so he could heal up. He was playing at about 50% for a while in some games that were winnable.

Player who looks to improve the most in 2018: Probably De Goey followed closely by Maynard.

The entire season summarized: Disappointing and frustrating. We beat Geelong, Melbourne, Sidney, Hawthorn and West Coast. Drew with Adelaide, lost to GWS by 3 points on their turf and lost by less than a goal to Melbourne in a match where we were reemed by the umps.

We also however lost to Carlton, Essendon TWICE and that loss to Hawthorn later in the year was incredibly disappointing.

We didn't lose by anymore than 37 points all year and most losses were less than 20 points.

We only have one big win though and that was by 54 points against North Melbourne. Our next biggest win was by 45 points against Brisbane at the MCG and Brisbane were still in it until the final qtr. I remember them being only 11 points down with like 5 mins to go in the 3rd qtr and they had a ton of momentum that qtr.

We only beat Freo by 20 points and Gold Coast by 15 points.

I'd rather consistency like St Kilda. I'd rather win the games we should win and lose the games shouldn't win. It's so frustrating and hard to figure out how we can have such close games with the 2 top sides in Adelaide and GWS and even beat Geelong and then get absolutely clobbered twice by Essendon and lose to clubs like Carlton and a Hawthorn side full of kids.

There's probably a few categories I'm forgetting. Feel free to add more.

Oh that Adelaide game. Can we give that the Jekyll&Hyde award for being most unrecognizable in 2nd half of the game?

From a Galaxy S8 far far away

I'm not seriously suggesting this as a category - Biggest Stuff-Up or perhaps more accurately Biggest Nightmare. But it would have to go to our 125th anniversary 'celebratory' weekend in May. Two losses to Carlton (AFL and VFL), Daisy playing probably his best ever game for the filth, foul weather, a freezing and poorly attended day at Vic Park, and a senior team which was meek and mild. That weekend really hurt.

Most intriguing for me for 2017 was every loss was within a few goals (only one game was 6 goals)
Remarkably close in many many games.... if we can put it all together...

And kick straight!

Accuracy kills

The Hurt: Agree with VP above, the Carlton game was the lowlight for me. The Adelaide game was also a source of pain.

The Hope: The standout performances of De Goey really did stand out for me. He had an unfortunate start to the year, but there's nothing more heartening than seeing a top draft pick show their worth. I wonder if Scharenberg will ever justify the pick we spent on him, but seeing him play consistent footy gives some hope for his future. I loved watching Kirby at VFL, and the happy simplicity of his approach to things: see opponent with ball, crunch opponent, see ball, get ball and kick goal.

The Deplorable: Mayne. Bad looks good in comparison to some of Mayne's worst moments, most of which were had at VFL level. He might improve in 2018, because it almost seems impossible not to improve on what he served up.

The Enigma: Aish. Positive signs at the end of 2016, then lost upon the field again last year.

Nice post/ thread howdy and happy new year
The happiest moment and the best footy I saw was second half against hawks
What a turn around
Showed we were a bit OVER COACHED to that stage IMO
Hoping this year we let the horses run

That sucked. I also have Maynes set shot from 35 out on a 45 degree angle which landed somewhere in the opposite pocket up there. I always thought his recruiting was ill advised but until that moment I had delusions our recruiting team knew better. Shudder.

The Hope: Crisp. Loved his work off half back and gives me hope we have one a-grader back there with his run and carry. His positive forward play is something we've lacked since Heater left. Now we just need to find Toovey and Johnson.

Putting Wells in as another worst recruit.. The bloke that single handedly won us like 5 games off his own boot...

Best Wins: Melbourne round 23. Not only did we get revenge for the QB farce but we knocked the smug bastards out of the finals.

Worst Losses: Carlton. Not just the loss but the fact that club hubris elected to give the guys a shortened break so they could celebrate past achievements.

Best Recruits: Lynden Dunn. From the scrap heap to 2nd best one on one defender in the league. Loves the club, is a real leader and we got him for free.

Worst Recruits: Chris Mayne. It's all been said before.

Most Improved: Brodie Grundy. Became one of the best ruckman in the league.

Least Progressed: Aish

Rising Star: Tom Phillips

Best change of position: Reid out of the backline. He was becoming a liability.

Best individual performance: Wells against Adelaide. Sublime.

Worst individual performance: Moore had some shockers.

Most significant injury: You only had to see how much better we were when he played to see how significant his injuries were.

Player who looks to improve the most in 2018: Degoey

Best Wins: Against Geelong. Seemed most complete game overall.

Worst Losses: Carlton. Enough said. Not happy against Essendon either. But Carlton just too dissapointing.

Best Recruits: Lynden Dunn. Leadership, big voice. Solidity. Had a big influence.
NB: had Wells played a bit more he'd win by the Flemington straight.

Least of the Recruits
: Chris Mayne. Don't like calling people worst. Unfortunately for Chris it just hasn't worked out. Maybe he turns it around.

Most Improved: Brayden Maynard just from the already excellent Brodie Grundy.

Least Progressed: jackson Ramsay and hence injuries and all he has moved to pastures greener.

Rising Star: Of the more regulars it's Jordan De Goey. Will be the beast he is.

Best change of position: Dunn for Schade. Started well did Schade but Dunn much better.

Best individual performance: Wells v Adelaide. Elite silk.

Least individual performance: The coaches can tell them, it happens, moving on.

Most significant injury: Wells. Because he is a difference maker. Then Elliott.

Player who looks to improve the most in 2018: De Goey and watch Scharenberg emerge.

A really tough year to analyse. We played some cracking games against the competitions best, and some absolute shockers against the worst. Whenever it looked as if we could carry some momentum, we found a way to lose it.

We were always competitive and were tough to beat, but we also never looked capable of kicking winning scores consistently. No fluency and a lot of confusion. We finished the year strongly enough.

If we clean up our ball movement then we can do well in 2018. If we don't, we could foreseeably go backwards.

That sucked. I also have Maynes set shot from 35 out on a 45 degree angle which landed somewhere in the opposite pocket up there. I always thought his recruiting was ill advised but until that moment I had delusions our recruiting team knew better. Shudder.

Same. I just thought that they must have known something that we didn't.

This is jogging the memory...

Best Wins
: Geelong & Melbourne. Adelaide first half an honourable mention...

Worst Losses: Carlton. Shocking & almost enough to give Bucks his marching orders. Daisy's celebrations the shit in the sandwich... though his legacy has been diminished more than the club's will ever be.

Best Recruits: Dunn & Hoskin Elliott. Dunn as solid as a rock, shouldve played from round 1, whilst H-E is / was underrated by many

Least of the Recruits
:

Most Improved: Shouldve been so many in here, but the obvious one is Grundy. I'd also say that Adams, Cox, Maynard, Howe & Shaz took steps up. Goldy too on previous season

Least Progressed: Oxley, Aish, Broomhead, Moore, Keeffe, Ramsey, Sier, Smith.

Rising Star: De Goey & Maynard.

Best change of position: Dunn for Schade. Crisp to backline also worked in the end, as did Reid forward... still queries on Crisp above his head though

Best individual performance: not sure. Sidey had some good games... as did De Goey, Wells & Grundy. Pendles had a ripper against Geelong early on... too easily forgotten about

Least individual performance: pass... wiped from the memory bank. Almost...

Most significant injury: De Goey, Wells, Elliott, Pendles, Treloar, Moore... they all hurt.

Player who looks to improve the most in 2018: Cox, Maynard, Brown, Moore, Daicos.

Best Wins: Geelong. Also if you stitch our first half against Adelaide with our last half against Hawthorn, thos four quarters were amongst our best. The best form of the lot though was the purple patch in the first quarter against the Swans

Worst Losses: Carlton. Off a tough run so losing not a total shock but it was pretty meek

Best Recruits: WHE and Dunn

Least of the Recruits
: Mayne obviously. Hopefully he has a better 2018.

Most Improved: Gruny, Maynard.

Least Progressed: Aish. Big call but I also thought some big names plateaued this year....Sidebottom and Pendlebury.

Rising Star: Tough one, lots of signs from lots of players. De Goey is one but I'll also nominate Phillips

Best change of position: Goldsack as a key defender alongside Dunn.

Best individual performance: Wells

Least individual performance: pass

Most significant injury: DeGoeys hand injury and suspension derailed our early season and we never recovered.

Player who looks to improve the most in 2018: Scharenburg, Cox, De Goey, Moore

We had a bad habit of picking up guys well past their prime for a while didn't we? Quinten Lynch, Jordan Russell, Clint Young and now Mayne (probably forgetting some). It doesn't matter what age they are as some players can rapidly decline well before they reach 30.

Chris Mayne circa 2012 was an awesome player. He was already declining by 2014 though and by 2016 it was obvious he was done. If Freo hadn't been able to get a deal done for him then they probably would've delisted him.

At the start of the year many were concerned about how many games we would get out of him, especially given his age and the length of his contract. I don't think anyone's denying his skills and what he would be able to add to our side when he's playing. He played some excellent games for us this year. I think he'd be a much better pick-up if we were in finals contention though which we probably won't be for a while.
