An issue I have is........and I like both Schultz and Houston (particularly Schultz) is that we havnt even traded out our first rounders for positions of need.

You could argue, at the time of acquisition, we were well stocked at half forward (Ginnivan, Hill, Elliott, McCreery) and half back (Howe, Noble, Crisp, Maynard, Quaynor and Perryman had be signed)...

I could more easily stomach trading away our first rounders if we actually filled a position of need (KPF, KPD, Pure Mid).
We didn't get them for one year. They are positions of need. We're very lucky to have Sidey and Pendles still playing. Imagine our team if we had a 20 year old Whitlock and a mid teens pick 19 year old midfielder on the list, but no Schultz and Houston and no Sidey or Pendles...that was the likely scenario for 2026 when we traded those picks.

Right on the money.. trade for key defenders key forwards and inside mids .. not flankers and forward pockets

Great now give the 23 flag back because we had Moore as single KPD after Murphy went down and Billy F’ing Frampton as KPF, while Bobby the ‘forward pocket’ got the Norm Smith.

This isn’t an either/or situation and I would argue the pointy end of the season is much less dictated by the performance of key position forwards than it is by almost every other position on the ground.

Ginny was virtually told he was unwanted so a bit rich saying sooked it up

Be that as it may, he was a contracted player and he could have very easily chosen to stay if he’d wanted to.

Exactly because we had Murphy as second key defender and we had miho as key forward who was 3 years younger plus we recruited tom mitchell as inside mids
The needs had changed post 24 and so should the priorities of the trades

I've come to the conclusion that I might be a bit hard on Hine. If we add Langdon, Murphy, Stepho and Carmichael, the recruiting would have been quite different
I didn't rate Carmichael but agree on the others.

There's too much luck involved to really judge them. It's not like the Lions went Pies are keen on Logan Morris he's going to be a gun let's trade above them to get him. Fair chance they wouldn't have taken him at 25 either. You'd need to analyse their draft boards over many years to judge them properly, so we'll never really know.

Not really when they probably told him youll be running around vfl and then mitchell gets on the phone to him

Why the love for Ginni? We lose the 2023 GF by 4 points, and you, me and every Collingwood supporter would want to draw and quarter him for hanging out at the trots the night before the GF.

I stand by my claim - if he pulled his head in and wasn’t such a sook, he’d still be at Collingwood. But it’s probably for the best he did choose to leave.

Hey 76, it was reported at the time that Fly was firm on pushing Ginni out, he was told as such in clear terms, and was reputedly surprised. Being told by the senior coach that you’re not wanted is not an inducement to try to stay.

I’ve posted about a million times that I think the club and Fly were wrong on this one. But that’s not the topic under discussion (thank God) and I otherwise agree with your post.

Scharenberg, Tommy Hunter, Brad Dick…

Does my head in - The whole premise is essentially: Let yourself become shit by replacing a premierhip team with 1 medicore first round pick a year, otherwise it will be a disaster and you'll become shit
I do believe that missing the 'super draft' was costly though. Our list would be more balanced if we would have had #13 instead of Houston. There were good players available and we woud not be talking about this total youth talent deficit if we nabbed some elite talent. It is not just about adding draft picks per se but getting them early enough to be the building blocks, Later picks and some shrewd trading can fill in the gaps. After winning the flag with an old list is a perfect time to regenerate methinks.

Schultz was the pick from that draft. I think we would have gone one of the tall forwards - I haven't been paying attention - are any of them going alright?

With the club’s current lack of talent under the age of 22, I fear for the future.
If Naicos doesn’t go to Tassie, the club could resemble the mid 90’s in a few years, where we had one champion in Buckley, surrounded by battlers.
This would be a depressing way to watch Naicos play out his career.

Ginni, Ollie Henry, Bobby and Checkers centre forward would give our forward some pattern and zip. Sliding doors. But we do need players invested to the cause and Checkers was ageing admittedly.

It is difficult to watch our current malaise of slow ball movement too often and clogged forward line with players standing hands in the air. No space opening patterns at all. Who is our forwards coach?

Collingwood could enter some dark years if this isn’t addressed very soon.
Watching Essendon yesterday, showed me that youth is the key to any revival.
Essendon have had 20 dark years in a row. There are better teams to emulate
