Any love for the "no more hit the post" theory?

If it goes between the big sticks it's a goal, regardless of whether it clips the post on the way through. If it ricochets off the post and back into the field of play, play on.
Not really.

I would like to see the nine point goal in the season proper. Surprised the AFL isnt interested as it looks good on TV.

AFL is probably the only field sport in the world that doesn’t award a goal (or full score) for a ball that touches the post on the way through.

It seems to be an anomaly- that has its roots during the infancy of the game in the 1850’s.

Soccer, Gaelic Football, all codes of Rugby even American Football awards full points or a goal no matter how the ball passes through the posts.

It would also require a play-on if it re-entered the field of play. I do recall preseason cup back in the day attempted this but not sure why it didn’t eventuate. It’s a rule that favours the accurate and disadvantages sides who are unlucky. The positive is it removes all doubt around the scraping the post and we’d only have to review touched on the line and off the boot. Hitting the OOB post would also need changing to I would of thought.

Is it hard to make one?

I heard a few times last season, a certain number of steps mentioned that constituted having prior opportunity.

I also saw several players get pinged and let off as they hadn’t exceeded this but had an eternity to get rid of the ball.

If cricketers can face bowlers at 145kmh and make decisions in 0.5 seconds on where to play the ball then an AFL plater surely has had prior after 2-3
The cricketer analogy isnt really applicable here though.

The batsman only has one specific point to focus on (the balls point of release) and the field is (mostly) set before the ball is bowled. There are many more moving parts in football. While the players focus may be only in front, they can be tackled/bumped from any direction.

And...i have no idea where i was going with that. Hmmm.

Think i need to eat something.

the batter is an interesting comparison - if only the umpire had one single thing like that to focus on

never mind the food - you were going where others have previously tread

It belongs in the Blue Room.

Like the way Richmond used the throw in rules in the gf.

If Sauce had half a bit of football initiative he would have smacked it 30 yards forward.

Sometimes you work it out on the fly.

The best way to stop the bullshit is to let the ruckman take possession from the throw in - that rule change is largely responsible for causing this ridiculous situation.

It could be that SOS hides him, like jack in school footy, doesn't let them play tac cup, if he's good enough we'll likely see him in the national carnival
I'd say thats fairly likely to be honest.

But what’s the problem with it being paid as a point? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Just shootin' the breeze.

I don't think it's necessary, but I also get extremely frustrated watching endless grainy replays from shit angles of the ball maybe kinda sorta almost probably but maybe not brushing the post. I have no issue with the hit the post rule, just with the goal umpires unwillingness to make a judgement call on it, backed by the AFL's technical incompetence at adjudicating it after the fact. Leave it in and tell the umpire it's their call, or get rid of it altogether.

That's awesome!

Don't know anything about those 2 but they come from good clubs.

Also did we lose any recruiters or just beef up our list and rbut uitment team by 2? That's got to help a lot.

It reads like that to me, good to see that we are serious about continuing the rebuild and not resting on our laurels.

Edit. Not that we've achieved anything, but I would think internally we are quite chuffed at our recruits over the last 3 years, as we all are.

“Following a recent review, we have bolstered our department with the additions of Mick and Dale to enable us to achieve our strategic objectives,” Silvagni said.
