I'm keen to hear your thoughts then.

Who goes out then?

Jones has quickly become number 1 down back.

We can the only play 2 other talls down back.

Yes, marchbank out injured, so not an issue right now. But assume all fit.

Weitering can go forward, but to date has not worked at all and he is probably losing confidence doing it.

So has to play back.

So who do we drop, plowman or marchbank?

They were all playing down back in the same team... Have been for four weeks. So theres your answer.

Edit: If you really wanted to drop someone out of the backline it would be White.

Given Jones emergence, is Weitering surplus to our needs.
Not for one minute am I questioning his abilty; but is he possibly a straight up trade for Kelly.

I feel backline assuming Jones form continues to end of year, is balanced.

Jones marchbank and plowman the bigs. Williamson, Docherty and Byrne the smalls.

Rowe and/or ASOS back up down back.

We keep pick 2 or 3, plus Gibbs. Get Kelly.

Say WHAT!

Not sure the problem you are talking about really exists.

Yeah lol stupid call - as if Whirlpool will slide that far. I reckon the real sliders will be that tall red-head guy (you know the one), and number 17 for Vic Country. Or was it Metro? No, sorry, he was WA in the TAC Cup. Everyone seems to think he's good, but there's something about that 3 minute highlights video that screams "There's something you haven't seen here that will make me slide well into the third round", and you can't ignore them feels, amiright? Whereas, you just don't get that feeling with Whippel.

Any player that makes the U/18 All-Australian team is a pretty fair chance of being picked up in the first round but what would the selectors of that team know anyway .........

James Worpel (Vic Country): Acquitted himself brilliantly as a bottom-ager last year then backed it up in 2017 as Vic Country co-captain. As his side produced an inconsistent campaign, Worpel was the opposite, consistently racking up the numbers to finish with averages of 19.8 disposals, 9.5 contested possessions, 8.3 tackles and four clearances. While his inside game has always been on-point, Worpel has added muscle to his frame over the past 12 months while his outside game is significantly better. Ready to play AFL footy now.

It's about balance.

3 talls right, 4 too many. How many successful cubs have rolled out a 4 tall 2 small defence?

Maybe Geelong way back with Scarlett, Harley, Mackie and lonergan.

The original point was, rather than sell the farm for kelly, is Weitering for Kelly an option given we have surplus tall backs and not enough quality mids.

Given how well we've performed defensively, I'd say the balance has been OK. If anything, the midfield has let us down the most in that area.

The game changes over time. It looks a lot like Bolton wants to play a taller-than-usual defensive unit that has air superiority over all forward lines with weaknesses mitigated through strict structures and a defensively postured midfield.

It's nice to be trailblazing something for once, instead of following the crowd, three steps behind. I say we see where this leads, particularly since the backline is where we are stacked with some excellent young players.

I'm with you 100% that our midfield needs a lot more quality added to it (and quantity to a degree). If we can do that without giving away assets like Weitering, it's ideal.

Yeah I can read too. Similar to the bar scene in Good Will Hunting, we could all just parrot other draft watchers, but perhaps some original thought would be nice. Without it being scoffed because of the opinions of said draft watchers.

He made the U/18 All-Australian team, are you dismissing that fact in favour of your own opinion of him ??

Hawthorn premiership teams

Talls - Lake, Frawley, Birchell, Gibson
Smalls - Stratton, Burgoyne

I'd love to see our own future premiership backline

Talls - Jones, Weitering, Marchbank, Plowman
Smalls - Docherty, Byrne

I don't have one. Do you? Or is it just other people's opinions that you've read? That's my whole point. You dismissed what Dramoth said he'd heard - if you did it based solely on phantom drafters and media pundits, then shame on you.

Can find other ways to get currency for Kelly.

This was a fun exercise. Here's the Under 18 All Australian Team of 2016 and where they were drafted:

Andrew McGrath - #1 ESS
Tim Taranto - #2 GWS
Hugh McCluggage - #3 BL
Will Brodie - #9 GCS
Jack Bowes - #10 GCS
Daniel Venables - #13 WCE
Harry Perryman - #14 GWS
Jordan Gallucci - #15 ADE
Tim English - #19 WB
Zac Fisher - #27 CAR
Callum Brown - #35 COL
Josh Battle - #39 STK
Brennan Cox - #41 FRE
Kobe Mutch - #42 ESS
Jack Maibaum - #45 SYD
Jack Graham - #53 RIC
Dylan Clarke - #63 ESS
Patrick Kerr - #65 CAR
Jonty Scharenberg - not drafted
Sam Walker - not drafted
Sam Hayes - not drafted
Alex Villis - not drafted (found to have a heart condition)

Literally everything from the first three picked in the national draft, 2nd, 4rd, 4th etc round picks and several who didn't get picked at all.

Does anybody know where these guys are playing their football this year and how they are going?
I have taken this from Shandogs list of the 2016 U/18 AA side.

Jonty Scharenberg - not drafted
Sam Walker - not drafted
Sam Hayes - not drafted

This year's draft pool is way thinner than last year's bumper crop with the bone-fide talent cutting off somewhere around the 20-25 mark.

A guy who blitzed it in the championships is not going to slide to 37 or more in a limited field.

Is that the same Sam Hayes who is actually part of this year's draft crop not last year's?
