Loving the fact that the Brownlow is pilloried by all and sundry as being worthless because it's just "the umpires award".

Today it's being talked about if it's the Nobel Peace Prize.
Context is a wonderful thing. Some pretty embarrassing comments in the media in the past 2 days regarding the Dangerfield situation. It's the fairest and best medal for a reason. Dangerfield took out Kruezer for the rest of a match with a poorly executed tackle leading to concussion. That's unfair to Carlton and their chances in the game. The suspension is just, as is the ineligibility.

So, in Hutchison's Geelong-tainted world, rules can be waived for star players, suspensions should take into consideration which round it is and suspensions should be lighter in the "pointy end" of the season.

Right.

Apparently so....

Has he even backed anything remotely like a winner this year ?

Kornes - TFS - Dangerfield wah wah

Croc Media - Crock of shit media

Here's just some of the bullshit (and plain hypocritical) comments of the past few days:
  • The head is sacrosanct, except for when damage is done by a star player
  • The rules apply to all, but should be bent for a star player
  • The injury to Blicavs means Sloane should be suspended, but the damage done to Kreuzer shouldn't apply in Dangerfield's case
  • Suspensions should be consistent, except for in the final rounds of the season
  • Players and coaches shouldn't comment on MRP, except if you're Scott or Dangerfield
  • Any time a free kick has not been paid should mean the player infringing has no case to answer for anything
  • We want the MRP to be consistent, but McCarthy's suspension should be ignored when looking at Dangerfield
  • The Brownlow isn't much of an award because it's "only voted on by the umpires", but if Dangerfield misses out, it will be the biggest travesty in Australian sporting history.
  • Geelong are the hardest done by club in the AFL, yet Dangerfield and Selwood get more frees combined than some clubs do.
And that's just thinking about it for five minutes.

Hutchy also thinks Ablett will go to Geelong for nothing.

I don't think Geelong will make a play for him. I think its fan lead romance. I don't think an ageing injury prone Ablett is the right fit for Geelong and I don't think Geelong think he is either. They already have a midfield that is too Dangerfield, Selwood centric, the last thing you would want is a team that becomes Ablett centric as well due to his reputation more so than what he can deliver. Ablett has only managed 13 games this season out of a possible 18 indicating his body is failing him. Turns 34 in the middle of next season and has only managed to play 48 games out of a possible 84. Gold Coast should just make sure he stays until the end of his contract as I dont think he has given them good value for money in recent years. Why let him go to Geelong and possibly play 22 games and play finals. It would be a stupid decision. Then again it is Gold Coast.

He's barely played any footy for 3 years, he isn't going to do any more in the next 2.

We don't know that for sure and thats my point. Gold Coast are spending all this money and energy rehabbing him on this insanely high contract with minimal return for 4 years. Why sell him on the potential that his body is finally right and he ends up playing a huge season for an opposition club. He has one year to run on his contract, I would keep him to it.

Anyone would think the guy is being dragged out the back and hit in the head with a shovel, all that is happening is he will be ineligible for the Brownlow. That's it. I honestly don't think Dangerfield gives as much of a crap as people are thinking he does. He would be more concerned with stuffing up the run home, VERY much like Sloane's report stuffed us last year.

In all honesty, rank these things in terms of importance amongst the past and present AFL players:
  • AFL Captain
  • Club Champion
  • Premiership Captain
  • Premiership Player
  • All-Australian
  • Brownlow Medal
  • AFL Players MVP
If you think the Brownlow is near the top of this list, I reckon you are out of touch. Luke Hodge, Lance Franklin, Nick Riewoldt, Gary Ablett Snr, Wayne Carey, Andrew McLeod ... the list goes on.

Dangerfield is a massive media whore, no doubt ... but he is also intent on winning a premiership with his beloved Cats. If Geelong beat Sydney without Danger, and he gets a week rest for his ankle - they would take the one week without hesitation. The fear they have right now is, can they win without him?

Nope. The AFL has been clear on this for two years. All players have a duty of care to their opponent and pinning both arms contravenes that. Anyone watching who has read the rules knew he should get the 1 game at the very least. That ruling has nothing to do with malicious intent, but with the tacklers technique. Pin both arms and drive the player head first into the ground is an 'illegal' tackle now.

Was more than 2 years ago that Tex got suspended for that kind of tackle on Taylor. The recent change I thought was related to the sling or second motion regardless of pinning of arms.

I'd say Sloane is also a fair player rubbed out last year, not that he was going to win a brownlow but that is irrelevant.
There was a huge media outcry when Sloane got rubbed out for that slightly wayward spoil too wasn't there? Oh that's right. It was barely even mentioned other than "Ebert bled. Fair penalty. Moving on."

This is another part of a bigger Vic bias issue.

There already is an award for players not called the Brownlow. The AFLPA award is there for PD to win. If the vFL had changed it 30 years ago to the Allen Aylett Medal then you could make an argument on changing the criteria. Get rubbed out you miss out. They have already watered most incidents down to a fine so nobody misses.

It was a poor tackle and that is what he was suspended for

They've only watered down incidents that wouldn't have raised an eyebrow let alone a fine or suspension in the past. I know that times change, but if we had access to as many camera angles from the last 100 years and retrospectively applied current rules, nearly every single Brownlow would change hands and end up with some do-gooding scrubber who was lucky to get a game.

All of this Dangerfield stuff reinforces my view that Geelong supporters would have close to the biggest self-entitlement syndrome in the AFL.

They expect the world gifted to them on a silver platter.

They expected us to hand over Dangerfield for nothing. Many view what we got was way too generous. Like WTF is that all about.

Now I really, really want Dangerfield to poll the most votes in the Brownlow. The tears would be the greatest gift to football.

Imagine if Selwood wins it though...that would be a shocker! Geelong supporters would still be happy too.

Hopefully they accept it and move on.

I've had a little bit of faith restored after the MRP handed down their decision, I would hate to lose it via a corrupt tribunal process where Dangerfield somehow magically gets exonerated.

They had to punish Paddy because it would be too suss to let Joel off and then a week later let Danger off when precedents have been set.

Imagine if the AFL overturned this whole thing....now that would be crazy! Ala the Houli case except the opposite!
