I had Pickett and Florent on the ground plus a zero from Swallow and had Butler on the bench. Managed to get 2187. I'll hold Pickett for a while yet. I'm lucky enough to have a few mid priced players so I don't need all rookies to go to 300k to trade for a premium.

Current Rookies at the moment:

Marchbank, Hampton, Otten (Hibberd, Stewart)
Petrovski-Seton, Powell-Pepper (Barrett, Pickett, Parfitt)
(Cameron)
Hoskin-Elliot, Hannan, Taranto (Eddy, Simpkin)

Will be nervous come selection time, though don't think I'm missing any 'must haves' so doubt I'll make any adjustments

I don't have Marchbank, McGrath and WHE.. And I won't be able to afford any of them :(

I also don't have Hannan, but he'll come in as a simple rookie correction, so that's OK

I think Stewart is safe, but my other 3 def rookies are a big worry (Hampton, Otten and Hibberd)

Really need Hibberd to have a good game if he manages to stay in, or EVW to have a ripper if he comes in

Hampton, Stewart (Smith, Macreadie)
(PP, Parfitt, Barrett)
(Strnadica)
WHE (Pickett, Eddy)

Happy to have such few rookies but only 1 round has been played, it is too early to tell how all of them will go.
the ****!? o_O
you're only starting 3 rookies? post team please

Ballsy

I do like it
Cheers. From what I've seen your teams have been pretty ballsy too and i believe you've ranked pretty highly before :) As a whole my team looks super risky but i think most of the individual picks are either popular or are PODs that at least have been scrutinised during the pre season and JLT. That said I think Salem is probably my biggest gamble. He is my most unique pick and while I watched him get midfield minutes in the JLT I'm not sure that will carry over to the season proper. I didn't see his 1st game but i believe he threw in a jekyl and hyde type performance which doesn't fill me with confidence so ill give him at least 1 more round before i consider other options.

im jealous

...for now
I'm happy with how round 1 went wrt rookies but no guarantees that continues. Equally I'm jealous of those with Gawn & Laird who would've been in my team had i went for more of a guns n rookies strategy. So yeah it'll be interesting to see how well my strategy goes compared to those teams that have more rookies starting, which is most!

That is quite a list. Yeah its definitely fun doing something a bit different, even if it doesn't pay off.

from what I saw of the game, the Crows will stick with Hampton. They looked fast and that seemed to be their advantage over GWS... Him, Otten, Hibberd I have as well (and think most do) and I am confident in Hampton's JS... as for the other 2, :(... think Otten will get another run though

I've gone down a similar path to you, but not to that extreme.
I've got 5 rookies onfield and 7 midpricers vs your 3 rookies and 13 midpricers.

The problem generally with going with lots of midpricers is that you dont get a total team value anywhere near as high as a guns and rookies team.
And more money to spend on players = better team generally.
(Most years the top teams value ends up being around 13.5 million)

I've gone with 7 midpricers this year because the lack of good rookies i think means that the top guns and rookie teams won't get quite as high in total team value (maybe maxing out sub 13 million this year?)

So if that happens, in theory I'll be well placed because my lack of cash generation wont be as significant as would be the case in other years.

I'd suggest going with 13 midpricers you REALLY need guns and rooks total team values to stay very very low (sub 12 million?), or else you will struggle in the 2nd half of the year.

However it pans out, it's going to be a facinating year

Like you said it is definitely the case that team value will not be as high but it won't need to be if enough mid-pricers become keepers. I think the hardest part about a MP strategy is that trading appears harder than with a GnR team. In a fully fledged GnR team you can generally tell which players you need to keep and which you need to trade, and more than that you should know the 'correct' timing given break-evens/availability of upgrade targets etc. Deciding who to keep, who to trade and when to pull the trigger appears much harder with a MP strategy. Instead of trading a maxed out rookie averaging 65 you may have to choose between 2 mid-pricers averaging 85 to trade. In effect you are gaining less ppt (points per trade) than you would with a GnR strategy. However, if you nail multiple mid-pricers and they become keepers then you are laughing and you can be just as successful as someone who implemented a good GnR strategy! What i love about this game is there are literally billions of permutations and combinations so there is definitely room for different strategies, you just have to do what you can with the cards your dealt so to speak.

Also as I've said before it is not a simple black and white game, it is very very complex so while BF groupthink can get you so far i think you need to stick your neck out and do something a little different in order to win, even if 'doing something different' is in fact choosing the most 'generic' team possible.

Correct .....Hampton actually got better as the game went on & he settled in ....it'll take 2-3 games of playing with team mates for Hampton to settle in

Pyke at his Press Conference was full of praise for Otten .....so you'd think he's safe ATS
