It was only 12 months ago that Shaw had earned his second consecutive back All-Australian. I understand he had a decline in form this year but was he truly that bad?

He was pretty average this year. His clangers really started adding up because of his increasing tendency to just toss the ball on the boot and hope.

There is just something that seems a little funny to me if he heads to Carlton to take some heat of their kids and help their young developing list, when we're in a similar boat.

Only time will tell if letting Rocky leave for pick 19 will be the right call. I'm personally not convinced right now that it is. Our midfield is clearly our biggest worry at the moment and were stripping an All Australian and club champion out of it. Yes he's 27 and had a tough second half of the year, but it's easy to forgot just how bloody good he was earlier in 2017 before he did his shoulder.
Personally I would be surprised if he goes to Carlton with Docherty there as an established AA or to Port with Voss there. Burnt a few bridges in his time has rock.

If Rocky is only being offered 600k to Carlton or Port and we dont match we are off our heads. What a joke.
Not sure you can call anything a joke when we don't have to match anything at this stage. Maybe just wait. Week or 2 before overreacting.
Exactly. Something doesn't fit
Same as above, nothing fits when we really have no idea what's going on. We've made an offer to Rocky and depending on what anther club offers we can then either look to match or say thanks for a great few years and take the compo pick.

Rocky loving the club and not staying due to an undervaluation are not mutually exclusive.

I would completely understand his reasons for moving if given an opportunity for a substantially higher pay increase, and I especially would not use that decision to cast doubt over his commitment to the club or his teammates.

Admittedly I would have thought he was a player worth holding onto, and a quality player at that. Despite this, I have a lot of trust in Fagan and Noble to navigate the situation and achieve an optimal outcome for the club in reaching their decision/strategy.

We're not Carlton.

They're going to lose Gibbs and want a replacement. They also have GWS young guns on tap to accelerate their regeneration, we don't have that luxury.

Our "great midfield on paper" has stunk it up on grass for at least half a decade. The dynamic has to change. I just can't get too emotionally invested in the stories of individuals in light of that.
I would tend to agree with most of your posts TheBrownDog but this one doesn't make sense to me.

I understand your statement of we are not carlton and agree we as a club we cannot and will not make decisions based on what other clubs do, however to suggest that Carlton’s ability to recruit players( from GWS) who have been in the system for 2 or 3 years would benefit more from a player like rockliff then a freshed faced 18 year old draftees such as ours is baffling to me. In my veiw our draftees would benifit more from the protection of player like rockliff then a player who has had 2 preseasons in the gym.

The replacement for gibbs is understandable but not to the detriment of our own midfield or to the value that player has to a team such as ours. In my veiw ( it is not lost on me that my veiws may well be different to those of our great club) a player such as rockliff holds more value to us because of our undeniable youth and our lack of depth in his position. If Rockliff were to leave then we too should be in the market for an experienced mid (and we maybe?)to fill the gaping hole he would leave.

As far as Rockliff body goes I would tend to agree with others on this for a number of reasons. His form was fantastic in the first half of the year before he did his shoulder which would suggest that he could return to that form once he has rehabilitated, the undeniable fact that he has been banged up over his career which would sway the clubs thinking in keeping him in a position we are crying out for mature bodies, seems strange to me, as we are on the verge of recruiting one of the most banged up players in the modern games history ( luke hodge, a decision I am all for might I add) to fill an experience deficit in our backline and he is 5 years older then Rockliff. Though I agree with you and others that his value lies in what he offers in the future for our club or another club, if we were to let him go the compensation would need to reflect the value that is in his past, his experience, he is one of 3 all australian's on our list and if we are to loose him, pick 18 or 19 would not fill the hole he would leave IMO. Unfortunately there is no in between compensation pick, so if we can't get pick 2 and we won't by the looks of things then we must keep that experience for a bit longer. Just my opinion

We've copped a 10K fine (half of it suspended) for a TPP breach. Admin error it seems. Story on AFL site. Not really much details though. AFL satisfied with improved administrative processes that have been since put in place.

So we didn't pay the minimum ?

Why haven't more clubs put forward their interest in Rocky publicly? Seems a bit strange... Suns and Eagles are two clubs who I think would definitely see someone like Rocky as a 'perfect' fit.

I'm sure clubs have enquired without making things public. Really there is no point making it public if they can't afford his asking price.

The problem I have is that, as a general rule, teams don't seem to take the step from being where we are to being finals contenders by continually letting their more experienced players go. Add in the fact the recent examples like Melbourne, St Kilda, Port, Bulldogs etc weren't as young as us to start. That worries me. I hope what we're doing will work, but with our age profile I'm not 100% sure it can without the concessions GWS had.

That interview was a little strange. Nobel basically hinted that rockliff will accept a free agency deal elsewhere and then almost in the same breath said that we need to address our midfield depth.

Unless the club is confident on pick 2 (which I don't know how they could be), I'm not super convinced showing Rocky the door is the right list management move for our club at the moment.

We pay club he is going to excess money to bump up his price gets us pick 2 common sense

Rocky may not be interested in them for whatever reason.

What would be the point in flagging your interest in a free agent? It can only serve to increase his value.

If it wasn't for potentially losing the rocky compo I would make a play for Jackson Trengove. He would be that big body key defender to take the pressure off Mcstay and Andrews. Could also be our relief ruck for small parts of the game when our main ruck is resting.

I'm not sure he's much of an upgrade on Frost. Port clearly don't rate him as a key back.

He is a league above Frost. Port played him forward this year out of position more due to a lack of other options forward. They have more cover/depth down back on thier list at the moment. I don't think you would find any club would pick Frost over Trengrove if able to pick between the 2.

overall I found the interview very interesting, some tactics starting with some of the trades already.

Obviously he has now set an expectation Rocky will leave, but he did open the door to matching the offer.

Re: Cameron he talked that down but I wasn't convinced and I expect that was also setting an expectation with Adelaide that our priority is elsewhere so don't expect us to knock on your door with pick 18 on the table on day 1 of trade week.

Schache discussion made me confident that Josh would be at Brisbane next year. He almost sounded bemused to be having to talk about it.

Hodge sounds like a dotting i's and crossing t's exercise.

Midfield depth as an overarching list issue has been documented the last couple of years so no issue there.

Also noted that he mentioned 'academy kids' coming through - plural - so clearly looking at Payne as well. (Clayton seems to have dropped away this year?).

They played Dougal Howard ahead of him in the final. He was 4th or 5th in the pecking order as a key back and has hardly played there recently. They're not disappointed to see the back of him.
