Has anyone apart from Damo suggested the Lobb link based on a misunderstanding of our ruck depth or is it just people reporting on the rumour that Damo created?
Denham said in The Australian today and I quote 'Brisbane appears almost certain to add Port Adelaide ruckman Matthew Lobbe'. So in answer to your question? No, no one else...

How does it work? Can Port frontload Rockliffs 1st year to get it to a certain amount so Brisbane get the best possible compo or is it average salary over the whole contract?

If you guys take on Lobbes 2 year contract (He'd eat the NEAFL for breakfast) then surely we'd have no problems making sure you get the best compo possible.
We no more need him for the NEAFL than you do for the SANFL.

A move for Lobbe would mean our ruck depth consists of: Martin, Smith, McInerney & Lobbe - with Walker as the "break in-case of emergency" fallback.

This seems excessive, so why would we do it?
  • Martin will get moved
  • NBA-type salary dump - we take a bad contract (Lobbe has two years to run on a healthy deal) in exchange for a juicy asset. In this case the asset would be an inflated compensation pick for Rockliff. Worth remembering Port doesn't have a first round pick so they have nothing to lose in terms of draft capital
  • We are going to reinvent the game by stacking our team with 22 195+ cm players and play keepings off

So you guys don't need an experienced backup ruck?
We have 3 rucks running around the Neafl already. He won't be on decent coin to play 2's, which means Martin goes to fwd/ruck (which hasnt been his go) or goes all together.

Sounds impractical to me if Martin stays. He should ruck over Lobbe. Could deffs be more likely if he goes and you need a stop gap ruck while others develop.

Pretty sure if Lobbe gets traded we can renegotiate a new contract. Port would be offloading the contract but doesn't mean we have to take on that contract.

So we turf Rockliff and are now bringing in a busted up Hodge and linked to spuds such as Lobbe and Trengove.

Sounds like a smashing strategy if you ask me

At least we get more and more draft picks :drunk:

After all we all know that every player we get linked to do, we end up getting.

Turfing Rockliff? Geez Dylan, you can set a clock by your yearly trade indigence.

It is interesting that this Lobbe talk keeps coming up. Doesn't seem like we are really chasing him, but maybe covering bases. I don't think we would go after another ruck if we still had Martin, and Lobbe is looking to move for more opportunity. In saying that Martin doesn't seem like he is going either. However, whilst happy to stay, Martin is one who would look at going back to Melbourne if a good opportunity came up. Perhaps he is getting interest and we are just keeping our options open.
Stick with martin, try to get more games into smith, big o. If the young fellas show good promise, all good. If not have a real crack at preuss next year

If this is the case I fully support it and it would seem a sound and perfectly strategic move from Ambrogio and co. If it results in a higher draft pick for Rocky lets do it.

Has been some talk of this. Lobbe will be good for 3 or 4 years while Oscar and Archie develop. Also all this Hickey and Lobbe talk might suggest there is something to the Martin rumour.
romours from vic journalists that make things up to print a story rather than do proper research. What they think we need or should do and what is actually happening are two different things.

Hope we don't overpay Lobbe

We'd be absorbing his current contract which yes is overpaying but we get pick 2 out of it. Do you not see how that is worth it?

Surley the AFL block the trade, no way they let Port pay more for Rockliff just so we take on Lobbe's contract. There would be a huge uproar.

But if it works thats absolutely genious, Rockliff would be laughing all the way to the bank as well

Like Eons mentioned above I think Lobbe would get a new contract with us, but from Port Adelaide's perspective they still offload it

I agree, getting the upgrade to pick 2 (and either keeping it and getting 2 quality 18 year old or trading one of them) is worth it, but what price do you reckon we pay? Not sure if I would want to give up pick 18 for that... next year second rounder MAYBE if the club thinks we move up a few spots
