Hayward and battle were two I thought would be absolute bargains last year. Both were my smokies. I wouldn't have minded either way if we done the trade or not at the time, however in hindsight it's looking like a Port win here. Someone has done the calculations and we had to get pick 11 for a break even of sorts. Looks like port will be around that mark as a minimum.

That "Maths" was based around what Port gave up vs what they got in return, so that pick ~11 win/loss, is more to do with them then us.

From our point of view, we downgrade a draft pick 3 place and secured a first rounder for Hanley. Even if Port continue at this rate and the pick become less attractive, it's still a decent outcome for us.

That trade is shaping up, where all parties will be reasonably happy with the outcome, come the end of the year.

Reckon saints are deliriously happy with how their trade worked out.

Even if it's pick 18 for Hanley it's not a terrible loss and Port isn't winning the premiership.

That's just the nature of future picks. Sometimes you get an absolute steal, sometimes things aren't as great as you expect. Not ideal that Port are doing well but it's not a terrible trade for us either way.

Funnily enough if we offered the Saints Port's 2017 first for the Hawks one they probably would have jumped at it.

Still a loooooong way to go before the end of the season. I'd be stunned if Hawks and Swans are still bottom 4 by then. I just keep thinking that something will just 'click' with both teams (especially Sydney), they pull the proverbial finger out, then start winning matches and being competitive again.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope to dear god that this coming game is NOT the game where Sydney decide to steady the ship with a big win and get their season forthcoming back on track...

At the time I thought the Hawks had done reasonably well for the JOM trade if he could get back on the park (likely scenario). However, it definitely seems like they have sold the farm for him in hindsight. Going to lose out on a probable top 4 pick this year for him in addition to all the picks they traded last year as well. I think they have been circle jerking over their previous trading history and got too far ahead of themselves last year.

Couldnt agree more. I maybe wrong but I cant see a miraculous turn around in form. At least not one that would have both clubs break even on that deal.

I wouldn't be overrating what Port have done so far this year they haven't beaten anyone of any note yet the 2 good teams they did play in Adelaide and GWS beat them
Sydney look finished
Carlton in Adelaide
Lions Fagan can't coach
And Fremantle in Adelaide
They may not have beaten anyone of note but that is because they havent had a chance to. They have looked really good against all teams pretty much. Although, it does help when you barely have a single injury to your list. Crazy how healthy they are

So Fagan has been in charge of the youngest list in the comp for 6 games and you have declared he can't coach? I think you will find he probably can coach and you need to give him a lot longer than 6 games.

Wouldn't even bother replying to such ignorance. Everyone who has some idea of footy recognizes the challenges that lay before fagan and can see the improvement he has made in the short time he has been here.

have to disagree here and it was fairly evident even on the weekend when we got smashed by allowing Keays and Berry to run with two of Port's mids in Polec and Ebert. Was a great teaching tool for both of them so early in their careers.

They haven't had a chance to? I'm sorry but that is absolute rubbish. They've played the Crows and Giants and lost both.

They've been pretty good. It feels to me they're probably not a top 4 side, but I can't see them missing the 8 if they keep up their current form. It's a long season though--maybe we get lucky.

Certainly helps that the Hawks and swans are playing like crap this year. Not many would have been brave enough to have both below Port this time of the year. Just our luck...

Certainly weren't disgraced like a bottom 8 team would have been.
I didn't say they were. However, to say they haven't had a chance to beat anyone of note is complete rubbish. They've played against the two best teams in the league at this early stage of the season. Also, fwiw, I think people overrate their performance against GWS. The Giants played so poorly in the first three quarters I was kind of shocked at how poor they were considering how good their team is. They appeared to be in cruise control up until the 4th quarter when they really put the foot down and they easily put Port away.

I think it is still a "win" for us if Port net us a pick in the 10-14 range. Some may see it as a loss due to the fact that pre season they got their hopes up for a top 8 pick but heading into this years draft with two top 14 picks will still be very handy.

All depends on where Ballenden gets bid on.

If Port finish 5th and net us pick 14 that is worth 1161 points. We can match a bid on pick 10 (1116 points after discount) without losing points off our second round pick, but from pick 9 and higher, we are seeing a points reduction on our second round pick.

If Ballenden is bid on at pick 5 after discount, we would still owe 341.4 points, seeing our second round pick 21 (based on current AFL ladder) drop down to pick 35.

Not even going to put any time into thinking about where Ballenden will get a bid on at this state. If we've learnt anything from past academy players it is that they tend to slip as the year goes on. At this same stage in their respective draft years Keays and Allison were rated as top 10 prospects. Ballenden hasn't exactly set the world on fire so far in the Div 2 champs from all reports.

Hipwood the exception there. Keays was supposed to be top 10, and Hipwood rd 2-3. Hipwood went well before Keays, around 13 from memory.

For me, the Port pick and Ballenden are inextricably linked as long as Ballenden is rated highly.

Considering we're not required to use a future traded pick to match academy players and can use the next pick down, I tend to think they're not as linked as you may believe.

I am talking about in regards to mid-tier opposition, not the premiership contenders such as Adelaide and GWS. Teams like Western bulldogs, NM, WC etc. Yes they lost both to them but they were hardly disgraced as SizeMatters said. If we played them, 150 point loss is my guess

He will go top 10. His match last weekend was meant to have been huge. I think if we want him to slip we should play him as a defender for the rest of the year lol.

Long story short, he is a great forward/ruck prospect in the Tippett/Boyd mould. Prospect is the key - he will take time but the signs are there that say he'll be very good.
