We should all remember we currently have so many tall forwards on our list that we needed to do something to balance it out. While it is not great that Schache is gone, we still have Hipwood, Walker, Close, Freeman, Hammelman as tall KPF, all have shown SOMETHING at the top level.

Even from an age profile situation, it looks better to turn Schache into Ballenden if that is what happens.

As long as there isn't an early pick for Ballenden, I back us in to take 3 good players with 1/15/18 following our draft from last year.
Freeman's gone

Freeman was delisted.

Close uncontracted.

Hammer uncontracted.

One of Hammer or close likely to be delisted

The people slamming Schache are going to feel so silly in 8 years when he makes his LeBron James style return to finish what he started.

I'm quite happy with where we have ended up, lets remind people what we did last year with picks-

17- Jarrod Berry.
23- Alex Witherden.
24- Cedric Cox.

This year around that region, picks 15 and 18, just let Mr.Conole weave his magic and all will be sweet.

Personally, can't get past the fact that we did so badly out of the trade period. Have waited to the end to dictate how I feel but am absolutely pissed. Thought Noble was tougher than that. Would love to play poker against that guy. Schache for a second round pick and a fourth, what a joke. He was friggen contracted, wait the year and see if you can do better. Cameron was contracted and we gave a first rounder. Why the hell didn't we do the same!!! Others here might want to spin the notion that we moved those and moved up but before that we had 12,18 and 20. You can't tell me that those three picks would have helped us move some spots. Absolute crap, for all the crap that Dodoro and others get I wished we had them running the ship because at least they would have held their nerve. Absolute crap. Suns, WC and Lions got reamed this trade period hands down.

We can't have it both ways... there's people here condemning the club for paying overs for someone who wants to be here while then condemning the fact we've accepted unders for a player who wanted to be traded to a Vic club? You can spin the "Schache would come back to the Lions for 2018" all you like but clearly the kid was struggling here and would have preferred to go home. He was just too damn polite to say it.

We struggle up here. We always will. Paying overs is just our lot. If you're not used to it by now you haven't been here long enough. And that goes with getting unders on the way out too. It sucks big time but that's the life of a Lions supporter. We're damn near powerless to change it.

Getting a known qty in Cameron and backing our newfound ability to improve him for 12 sits better with me than getting another Aish or even a Schache. One was just a monumental failure, and one despite his best efforts just couldn't make it happen up here. Those 2 things alone should give some justification in paying for a guy who WANTS to be here, was DETERMINED to get here and has a damn good baseline from which to improve.

Exactly this. I can't be that angry at the club because I think it is out of our hands and isn't unique to us. Look at what Gold Coast had to give up for Weller! And they are very likely to lose lynch next year too. And there is no chance retention allowances will ever get back on the agenda and we won't get gift priority picks like Hawthorn, Richmond, Melbourne and Carlton got.

Once again, strong demonstration that it really is #VFL. If I hadn't been supporting the Lions my whole life, I wouldn't bother paying attention or watching much footy. That's why I've been cheering GWS and sydney on the last few finals series, because every bit of their success pisses off the tribalistic, melbourne-centric AFL.

I like your optimism. Yes last year was a winner, but clubs it seemed didn't value the later first round picks with a weaker draft. I'm not a s nearly confident with what we pick up this year.

If we count last years haul as a big tick for Conole then he has to swallow the Schache bust as well. That hurts massively.

I love the 20 and 25 for 15 and 52.

1, 15 and 18 to the draft and fingers crossed that part of the deal with the Tigers is that they don't bid on Ballenden at 17.
Richmond will probably need pick 17 to bid on Naish. A nice additional result of the pick swap with Richmond is that it means they likely won't be able to bid on Ballenden with pick 17.

Draft Picks: 1, 15, 18, 40, 44.

Rockliff + Schache for Cameron + Pick 40 essentially this trade period....add in a downgrade of Pick 12 to 15. Oh dear.

You'd hope the Bulldogs & Richmond deals included assurances not to bid on Ballenden given they have Picks 16 & 17.

We have six picks and 5 free spots at the moment I think...
If we can pick up 3 good mids with 1, 15, 18 and then match ballenden with 40 n 44, then get payne with 52 i think we look good going fwd. Need to hold on to close for fwd cover n c beams for a bit of experience in the neafl and can step up to afl when needed. All very positive i think. With hodge n cameron and another year with minimum injuries and we should see further improvement. If miles is available in psd do we jump on him and delist c beams.

Hopefully mccluggae and witherden have massive years so we at least get first round picks for them.

This.

Yet another year of Victorian media declaring they're not worth more than pick 20. Every year it's the same story with a different player.

I'm struggling to deal with this crap year on year. When Josh re-signed I really thought it was a turning point.

I'm happy to be honest, the Schache circus won't drag on for another year or two. We got players in Hodge and Cameron who will fill obvious needs in back line leadership and forward, both way running pressure. We still have three picks in the first round. Sounds like a lot went right and we know where we stand. Personally I think we did better than Adelaide, a premiership contender from a strong AFL state as opposed to the side who finished 18th and exists on media vapors out in the AFL boondocks. Well done lions admin.

Edit: Steven Wells (Geelong recruiting manager) was just on SEN and said he thought we did really well.

We still have to delist, Mick Close and Clay Beams to get 6 list spots = 6 picks. If 2 picks are used to match Ballenden then a pick returns to back of draft which could be used to upgrade Hammer or redraft Close and C Beams to senior list. (Unlikely) Close and C Beams could also be taken in rookie draft. Only way we would have a spot for preseason draft for Miles is if we pass on our last pick. Unlikely in my view.

Don't forget a certain triple premiership winning captain in there #cheerupbrian

I've had a think about it, and i'm not quite so livid anymore.

Rockliffe and Schache for Cameron.

No doubt, today was a huge step back for the club. It's not a death knell though. Realistically, for a few years now, we get good draft picks, and then we lose half of what we get during the trade period. Obviously the culmination was the GH5, where we lost a complete age demographic of players, and set ourselves back about 3 years. Most years though, it's 2 steps forward (draft), 1 step back (trade).

This isn't quite as bad as the GH5 though. We lost Rocky, who was never going to be part of our next finals campaign anyway. Pretend that he retired and move on. Then we lost Schache for Cameron (plus some pick swaps against us). That's a big hit. In my mind, we're missing top-end draft talent. Cameron should turn into a solid B grader, but really, the hit is that we lost Schache, a potential A grader.

I guess what I think in the end is that, at least this time, we don't have to go back for another rebuild. We lost a pick 2, basically for nothing... Effectively that just means that rather than a draft gain and trade loss netting a small gain, we end up with a net zero. End result being that this pushes our development back another year. I was hoping we'd aiming for finals 2019-2020, now I think it's 2020-2021.

The upside of mature players is that you get immediate results though, plus with someone like Hodge, better development along the way. The downside is that by picking up mature players like Hodge and Cameron, who'll both be regular starters, they'll actually improve our short term performance a bit. So instead of getting a couple of pick 1s while we wait, plus possibly a priority pick, we'll have a couple of pick 3-4s while we wait, and no priority pick. This will probably lower our ceiling even when we do get there. Lower likelihood of ultimate success before we head back down the bottom and do it all again.

Pretty disappointed in the club today. Was hoping we were past these sort of things.
