What proportion of first round picks are successful commensurate with their pick? Without knowing specific figures, I’d expect that it was pretty low. You’d be sacking an awful lot of staff under your approach. Any sensible review of outcomes requires you to consider the context.
It's a fair point. But which team in this league persists with mediocrity for years on end?

You need hindsight to figure out if someone is comfortable with focused attention or not? Gee whiz.

That's exactly what I meant. Riveting riposte. You've undone elite AFL recruiters, a person with a personal connection with Joshua and a bigfooty shitposter all from the comfort of your living room

Whilst you've graced us with your presence can I please have December 2015's lotto numbers. The moron that sold me the ticket couldn't give me the winning numbers but I'm sure you can.

When we beat the Dogs in the last Round of 2015, we avoided the spoon, thereby "missing out" on Pick 1.

Schache was so universally highly regarded, it was line ball as to whether he or Weitering would be taken Pick 1.

Which led to the fear amongst Lions supporters that Carlton could/would pinch him from under our noses. I can clearly recall a number of media "experts" expressing disbelief that the Lions could have been so "stupid" as to win that last game and therbeby jeopardise our chances of getting Schache, the player that was "meant" for us. (In other words, we were being accused of being naiive and stupid for not tanking)

As it transpired, as draft night drew near, we all started to breathe a little easier when Carlton signalled that they were likely to take Weitering at Pick 1. When they went ahead and took Weitering , there was this general euphoria amongst Lions fans that we ended up getting our man. If we had bypassed Schache and taken Oliver it would have been regarded at the time as one of the most baffling and mind blowing decisions in the club's history

Sometimes a notion has such momentum that it is just impossible not to go with it.

There's no point in attempting 9to retrospectively point fingers and apportion blame.

As someone said previously, ju happens!
wo
Let's move on.

Agree Schaches gone, lets work out how we are going to win clearances and kick 15 goals a week as we need to add something to the current squad for that to happen.

Its kinda like farming in nq. You do everything right and a cyclone still wipes you out. In this case our cyclone was josh's inability to settle in qld.
Fair point. I wonder what we're doing to protect against the next cyclone.

Our recruitment and list management staff have done a terrific job in their player selections on draft night over the last few years, NO CLUB IS GOING TO HAVE A 100% STRIKE RATE.

2016- Hughe McCluggage, Jarrod Berry (signed extension), Alex Witherden, Cedric Cox (signed extension).
2015- Josh Schache:(, Eric Hipwood, Ben Keays, Rhys Matheison.
2014- Nobody drafted till Liam Dawson at pick 44, D.Beams, A.Christensen traded in.
2013- James Aish:(, Darcy Gardner, Daniel McStay, Lewy Taylor, Tom Cutler?, Nick Robertson.
2012- Sam Mayes, Marco Paparone?, Michael Close?.

Overall a bloody good strike rate, I wouldn't be throwing any blame on those responsible for our draft selections since the GH5.

The drafters had a bloody good strike rate even with GH5

Yeo= all Australian

Dochety = all Australian

Polec= regular member of a (reasonably) successful Port side....jury still out to a cetrain degree

Longer= starting to look something like a decent Ruck for the Saints

Karnezis=BUST!

Pretty good really.

It wasn't the drafters fault that these boys all took off:footy:

Rich how? The club didnt accurately gauge Josh's personality and motivations at the time, as evidenced by them promoting him as a saviour when that kind of pressure was apparently not good for him. If they can't gauge something like that accurately, neither can they gauge if a player will ultimately end up staying. Why do I believe it was a mistake? The results show it to be pretty obvious.
No matter what anyone says you'll just twist it to suit your agenda. You have no idea how or what occurred during the interviews with Josh. He may have been happy to move but the reality of it made him struggle. Why did 19 teams passed on Nat Fyfe? Things change and the reality is if Josh thrives in Melbourne most lions supporters will be happy for the kid

Hird was drafted at Pick 76

How bad were those drafters back then eh?

Rocky was missed in the one draft and picked late r. Makes him in the 100s.

Note I'm not concerned with accuracy of actual draft position here. Fix as suits if detail oriented.

Cheers! You're welcome.

FFS mate. You have been here 5 minutes and because you can pick a deficiency 2 years later you wont accept others read on it

Either learn or f off.

No I hadn't forgotten, they were taken very late in the draft, I didn't mention Harris Andrews either who went pick 61 (academy I know but still had to match a late bid on him) in the same draft. The academy players that we have passed on over the years look like they have been good decisions too at this point in time eg. Mobior Chol, Declan Watson and Corey Wagner to name a few. I did a quick scan of our drafting and didn't bother with the later rounds as I think you would find that any sort of strike rate with very late round picks for any club is very low.

Since the year the go home 5 were drafted (2011) those responsible for selecting our draftees have been exceptional IMO, the only young guns (first 2 rounds of the draft) to go home due to home sickness are James Aish and Josh Schache, Aish will certainly be no gun and the jury out on Schache at this stage.

overall our talent ID has been very good, and we have had some very good drafting. Our problem has been keeping them, especially the higher profile top line picks. I dont doubt that these guys being higher profile get more attention and are lured back with big money much eaiser.

The GH5 did have some reasons, the club was not great back then. Since then we have made a lot of improvements, although you will always have the odd 1 or 2, every club does. We are at the point now where some results and success will be a factor in helping to keep players here, making footy enjoyable for them. We just need some buy in and belief for a couple more years before they really start seeing it.

Few people throwing around Schache coming back to "finish what he started". Personally I don't see it.

I felt it at the time with LeBron and Ablett Jnr - it made a lot of sense for both of those guys to eventually return home (for different reasons), but I just don't see it with Josh's character and make-up.

I think it's more of a humorous, fanciful hypothetical for most, certainly was my intention when I used it.

I would have thought there is a big question mark on whether Josh is still playing AFL in five years not on who he will be playing for.

Has that Nathan Ablett feel about him.

Tons of ability but no drive or love for the game.
