Daniel Lloyd, AMT, Marcus Adams, Ben Brown.. why do we not find any talent from lower levels to fill some 22-26 year old age bracket? Worked with Drummond and Zorko, feel we need to be finding more of these guys.
It would help. I think we have that talent on our list, we just have to wait for our kids to mature and we have to keep them, which has been our issue. Your point is a good one though, especially in terms of where we should be looking to draft. Bell, and Bastinac have turned out to be shockers for us and I don't hold out much hope for Frost, but we should keep trying to pick up players in the 22-26 year old bracket. We might get it right sooner or later.

Yeah we go for guys already struggling or proven to be B or C grade at AFL level. Who fall into the same holes with us, as we are often worse than the teams they came from (I do like barrett) - when you pluck Guys from state leagues, they are battlers who, generally, will give the right nut just to be there, without hang ups, or having already struggled elsewhere etc.. there are non listed rare gems at the state level, as proven each year.. maybe we don't have the resources to scout them.

Im pretty sure Bastinac and Bell fell into this category. Both have played AFL at a pretty decent standard in the past. I am concerned with our clubs inability to get the most our of these guys.

Leppa got more from them? Is it because we recruited them under him? Has the FagNob team delivered a negative message to these mid tier guys and they have cracked the sads?

Edit: Sorry, misread your post. You meant that we need to stop recruiting b and c grade types.
Anyway still think my point is valid regarding Bell and Basti. What's happened to them?

I don't believe we set out to recruit the likes of Bell, Bastinac, Frost etc. It's more likely these were the only players willing to move to the Lions.

I'm sure we would jump at the chance to recruit higher quality players but, except for the rare circumstance, they do not want to play for us.

With the new CBA and the predicted rise in cap coming into effect, I wonder if we might see some inflated compensation picks for free agents this year given the formula wouldn't take it into account. Really only helps us if Rocky does decide to leave, but will be interesting to see none the less.

I've already mentioned this. I'd expect our 2nd round pick to move back a couple of picks.

And I fully expect our 3rd round pick (from Collingwood) to be pushed back to the mid to late 40's.

I am happy to bring in the bell and basti's still - just think we need to also find the next Tipper, adams or Ben Brown at state level. These players should be looking at us as their shot at the big time with the current state of our list. I am saying, id rather look at the state league talent that b grade AFL listed players. Also asking why, since Zorko, we havent managed to jag a non listed mature aged recruit (bar eagles) and is it our recruiting resourcing? Aka - not having the budget to fly scouts to state level games each year.

And yes, our inability to make these guys work (basti, bell, jansen) for me is just they struggle being so exposed with no talent around them.

Grewar, McInerney, ZoB, Wrigley and im sure there are others.

Every club in the AFL have so called spuds and list cloggers you just don't want too many of them in older age brackets eg. Bell, Bewick, Harwood, C.Beams.

Keep your B+ to elite level older talent eg. D.Beams, Rockliff, Zorko, Robinson, Christensen and move the rest on for either better experienced talent or go to the draft or trade in A grade younger talent.

I watched the Victoria v wa state league game on to last week. Wa lad Jye Bolton looked very good. Won the sandover last year, 25yo. Spent 1 year in pies rookie list in 2011 but didn't stick. Wasn't a tac cup player and said it all came too early for him at elite level.

Looked to be a very hard runner, solid body size, kicked a goal on the run from 55m and also spotted up players lowering the eyes.

Could be worth a look especially think it might make sense ahead of using say pick 76 or whatever on a rookie. That hasn't worked for us very often (Clayton, mcguiness, Lyons)

They are there 100%. In the past we have made the wrong decisions. Some of it is luck and others are based on homework but there will be players in this next draft that can help our young list while they develop.

Pretty good summary of all restricted and unrestricted agents across the league:

I'd certainly be talking to Mackenzie or Hansen if I were the lions. I know fagan has talked about only bringing in next premiership contributing players but as their free agents we're only giving up a list spot and salary cap, both of which we have enough of. Mackenzie in particular would be a good get as I think there's still enough there playing wise, and he's been credited for helping a lot with the development of the new crop of Eagles key backs.
