Don't we have to offer a contract to get free agency compensation otherwise we're delisting him?

Reported on On the Couch that Tom Rockliff has been offered a new contract by the Lions, but it is for less than what he is currently on.

Read into that what you will.
Wasn't there a comment about Adelaide in there as well? I still see someone like the Hawks or another Vic team being interested in Rocky.

There was, but it was pretty ambiguous and I wasn't sure how the comment to Browny about "Adelaide" and "Mark Ricciuto" exactly tied in.

Part of Charlie trade with Adelaide perhaps. Next year we probably don't need to pay him so much to reach 92% of salary cap. I really think it would be best for rocky to have a fresh start somewhere else.

From the upcoming media info thread, thanks Maboo

Interesting, I wonder who is out there in that age bracket that we can entice north. I have a feeling in my bones that Fagan, Noble and Ambrogio may pull off an unexpected coup this trade period.

Wouldn't mind Tom Nicholls as a replacement for Martin. Hard to get a game in when Witts has been arguably the best ruck in the comp this year. A bit lazy from reports though...

I am suggesting b grundy collingwood unsigned pre season draft . Dislike collingwood immensely. Good age bracket.imposing like martin. 23 yeras old. Stick the knife into Buckley.

The offer will represent where he sits in the team hierarchy now. Previous contract he was our best and captain. He has struggled with his body for the last few years too

Zorko and Beams will be past him and the likes of Schache, Hipwood, Andrews are more important to our longer term planning.

Given many of our third years have also taken a big step forward and we want to keep all of the talent from the last couple of drafts, there will be pressure. We might also be on the hunt for someone through the trade period.

Beams is right about the gap in the 24-26 year old age bracket. Our list looks good, finally got some top end talent, but age profile is still an absolute mess.

Problem is there is no easy fix for this age gap. That is prime years for players, so you are either giving up something good (draft picks) to get those players or you are getting plodders, which doesnt really improve the list. You can do well by finding the bargin players like Robbo, but this is hard to do. We arent in the position to spend draft picks because we need them to keep bringing in young talent.

We simply need to stay the course and wait for our young players to age into that missing age gap. Doing that and continuing to hit up the draft will bring in talent and fix the gap. Trading picks also risks creating a new age gap in the future by missing a few drafts.

Take opportunities when they come up with the likes of Cameron, maybe try lure a FA or 2, but we can't afford to trade much.

Sounds like a Hawks model to me - hopefully gone are the days of dishing out mega contracts and players accept slightly under to build sustainable excellence.

Our players in the 24-26 age bracket.

24- Blake Grewar, Josh Walker, Ryan Lester.
25- Jack Frost, Claye Beams, Ryan Harwood.
26- Ryan Bastinac, Tom Bell, Allen Christensen.

Makes for pretty sad reading Beams, Harwood, and Grewar could possibly be delisted, Frost and Bell:eek:, Bastinac and Walker could be good fits for us just want them to show consistency for the rest of the year for me to be convinced on them. Lester been good this year but still has some very ordinary games. IMO when fully fit and firing Allen Christensen the only really good player in that age bracket.

I would like us to go along the Sam Mitchell route and target an experienced and succesful player who wants to move into coaching a couple of years down the track .Someone with less miles on thee clock but who can see the end.Type of player I am thinking of is Grant Birchell / Heath Grundy. No ifea if this is feasible but it follows the GWS model.Maybe Joel Patfull could be persuaded.

Yep, I've been for this sort of thing for a while, I would want to only go down the route of elite players and leaders who want to get into coaching. Players of that standard and proven leadership qualities such as Luke Hodge, Robert Murphy and Shaun Burgoyne for 1 year play + 2 year assistant coaching role.

IIRC Joel Patfull moved to Sydney for life after football opportunities.

Oh my, that is really terrible reading. Im really nervous that we will go backwards again once zorko, rocky, beams, martin hit 30+ together, we have no one cooming through in the geberation under them and the next wave still wont be ready to take over. That period of poor drafting / mid ladder finishes / compromised drafts really nuked that generation on our list.

With comments that he has made previously, i just cant see Fages going down that route.
And the fact that Beams has just mentioned the deficiencies in the 24-26 year age bracket i think that is where we will look. And rightfully so.
Would definitely still look at Hodge in a coaching role though.
