Can be more than just a 2 way deal. In my mind, there was little doubt that Schache wanted to go back to Victoria however the planets didn't align and a deal couldn't be struck. NOW that the cards are in the hands of Noble & Co, maybe there is some more interest in getting an exciting deal done that makes everyone happy. Maybe. I don't think its all crap.
Part of me goes, "this hasn't gone away and he doesn't look like someone happy to be here for the next couple of years."

I believe he did want to go, but now, as you said, we have the whip hand because he is contracted for two years at moderate money. There could be a lineup to take that contract over.

Either way the club is in better shape, but the mind boggles as to who they would be chasing.

Why would Schache have agreed to the deal though? I have no idea how re-signing when he was OOC would've worked for him if he actually wanted to leave. We'd be assuming that he felt loyal enough to want us to get a good deal and prepared to risk being stuck here over that?

This still seems pretty implausible to me.

Eases the pressure. Signs, everybody gets off his back, buys time, knowing deals can always be done later.

Seems odd though.

Looking purely from a list perspective, he is playing a position we have depth in with more to be drafted. If it helps land us a Hopper or Kelly type, we move forward and move on.

Can you trade a player in the same year you have re-signed him? dlanod thought you may know?

There's no rule against it.

However logic strongly argues against it. Both player and club consented and were willing to sign an extension. If there's no reason advanced as to why both have now allegedly changed their mind it's basically a load of horseshit. After all both player and club agreed on an extension, and both player and club would have to agree on a trade.

I understand what you're saying, except that he's now contracted so we're in a position to hold him here. If he wasn't genuinely intending to stick around that'd be a risky play.

I am sure Schache wont be on the trade table. He has a 2 year contract signed a few months ago. The club would look silly trading him after finally getting a high draft pick to stay at the club..

The Schache thing is the stupidest thing I've seen written about Brisbane all year.

We're more likely to sign Kelly and Martin than to trade a player we just signed.

Journalists not even trying anymore. They should at least attempt to make things plausible

Also in that article on AFL.com.au contained the following from other clubs:

Adelaide - Charlie Cameron is expected to seek a trade to the Brisbane Lions, having grown up in Queensland, but the midfielder is contracted until the end of 2018 so the Crows hold the whip hand. Adelaide remains keen to bolster its midfield. It has been strongly linked with Brisbane Lions free agent Tom Rockliff

Collingwood -
However, Lions forward Michael Close is believed to be on Collingwood's radar.

Port Adelaide - Port's efforts to retain Pittard could be complicated if it decides to pursue interest in restricted free agents Tom Rockliff

Also of note is that article is that GWS' Jacob Hopper was linked to no less than 8 clubs including the Lions, Adelaide, Carlton, Essendon, Geelong, Hawthorn, North Melbourne and Richmond plus of course remaining at GWS.

I would be gutted if Close went to Collingwood. We should be trying hard to keep him and trade Freeman

Brian Waldron (aka Northern Spy & ex dodgy Storm chief) was the first to bring up the possibility of Schache being back on the table in mid July.

As unlikely as it is to happen and as much of a ***** Waldron is, he doesn't have a bad record. Just looked back and he called Gibbs last year before it happened. The Cameron rumour to us months ago, Barker to Suns earlier this year (which admittedly hasn't happened yet) etc etc.

But yeah surely not...

I wouldn't blame Close if he moved on for greater opportunity.

Schache and Hipwood are clearly the teams focus in regards to playing time for development in the seniors. Walker is ahead of Close as the mature body to help the development of our young key forwards. One of Freeman or Hammelmann is a possibility to be kept on, with Ballenden to be drafted this year. And we're likely to see both Archie and Oscar get time in the seniors next year in that second ruck up forward role.

Think we should go hard after Miles from Richmond. Elite clearance player and in the right age bracket.

If we could add Cameron and Miles and Robbo and Christensen stay fit for the year we will play finals next year.

I just can't imagine there not being truth to the Schache rumour given the multiple reports of late.

Which reports are these? Just Brian Waldron or are there others?

I don't understand what would have changed between June and now and I doubt we would agree to trade him if he asked now. It doesn't pass the smell test.

Until there's something concrete it's probably best to ignore these rumors ,sound to me like Mexican sour grapes.

But worse case scenario we will be in a much better position if he does go. Plus we have Ballenden coming his year and Tozer on the horizon.

With currently picks 6 and 8, would a deal interest any of you for pick 1? Obviously extras can be included.
