Chris25 has posted the first BigFooty phantom of the year and has us taking Adam Cerra with our first pick at #10. That would be a pretty good result.

And there would still be complaints that he is a HBF. And yes, he did spend time there in the U18 carnival and he did also spend time in the midfield.

I don't care if we draft hbf's that project to be midfielders, my problem is that we never seem to actually develop them into midfielders. We give them a few games there (and by there I really mean they get stuck on a hff with a few rotations onto the wing) and then when it doesn't work out go, oh well, better shunt them off to half back again. We've even gone so far as to do this with genuine midfielders as well. We'd have to be close to the worst in the league at developing young players.

I realise he polarises people but he might spark Jack into being stronger in the contest and alongside of JK he would be awesome.

Steve is really happy in Sydney and committed to GWS. There is a core at GWS in their leadership team that want to win the flag as a group and not just once so a single flag will more likely fuel a desire to go back to back.

I really hope Sam Mitchell can help in the development of a lot of our young players, especially ones we expect to go into the midfield - Nelson, Cole, Duggan, Yeo, Venables, Parto, Sheed.

Shuey is really the only player that has ever developed into a midfielder for us after starting on the HFF. Sheed aswell but he's not at the level of Shuey

Watching last night and even other games I wonder if one of our biggest strengths has been exploited by opposition coaches to expose and take advantage of our biggest weakness?

What I mean is we have several exceptional intercept marking defenders in McGovern, Barras, Hurn and Sheppard that now opposition teams have learned to run the ball through the middle, lower their eyes and not kick long forward. This has then exploited our biggest weakness being our midfield and lack of pace.

So what do we do about that from a list perspective?

Would say trading McGov to Freo in the long run balance our list better?

I don't think we should get rid of one of our best because we have deficiencies elsewhere Obeanie. The real issue for me is we have the wrong mix of players. We have had opportunities to draft mids that are bigger bodied and more explosive or have pace etc but we have chosen relatively small/medium sized mids with no explosiveness and average pace who are good solid footballers. Apart from Shuey, we have a whole midfield full of them. You could say the same with our smaller forwards and backs in that until last year we haven't chosen a true crumbing/goal sneak forward or any HBFs with express pace to break lines.

What we need to do is go to the draft and get some diversity in the team (or trade for some). A graders would of course be nice but being more realistic, if we had picked SPP for example (and Venebles may end up being better so I am not debating that) and picked another mid or HBF with express pace or size and aggression instead of say Duggan, Sheed, Partington, Mutimer etc (all of whom I like and have potential), our team would look so different. We need some bigger bodied mids or some with natural aggression. We are simply one sized, one paced, one dimensional. I can't think of a single one of our mids who could smash into a pack and inspire the team through physicality. Shuey can do it with skill but we don't have physical players that can inspire when the heat is on and we crumble when it is. We also don't have any X factor apart from NN. We seem to draft best available without looking at what the team is missing (i.e. do we really need more "solid" mids and HBFs?).

Also think Sheppard should be expected to provide more run so we aren't relying on so few players in the middle to move the ball forward. Like Hurn, Sheppard plays tall which means we often playing with what is effectively 4 or 5 'tall' defenders. Hence smaller running forwards tend to kill us

I would say that is good footy. Most of our defence is built on team zoning and falls apart when forwards project one on one of find space.

Yeh this is why I reckon 'best available' is bit of a myth and should be avoided unless you're picking in the top 5 or so.

Can end up just translating to 'not good at anything in particular'.

Should always be aiming to improve your particular list, which involves identifying attributes you are lacking, but people tend to shy away from the idea of picking for needs anywhere outside the back end of the draft/RD

Decent list I would have OlDiver up higher and also swap Thompson with Sicily.

Well one thing IMO that needs to change is our loose web / zone defense and the corralling of payers instead of actually laying a tackle.

In the midfield I think this is because of personnel, the likes of Gaff, Masten, Priddis and Mitchell simply do not have the pace to commit to a tackle against more agile opponents, one side step and then they are chasing tail and not catching up.

Agree the draft best available approach hasn't worked........especially when we don't draft the best available.

Aggression, pace and hardness at the contest MUST be a key requisite for any mids we draft. Not interested in smaller, slower mids who can't win a contest.

Draft and develop many more midfielders. Not half backs with some midfield potential five years post-draft. I don't think the club has done anywhere near enough to address it as much as we have all known how big a problem it is for so many years.

Anyway my point was that we shouldn't be trading out McGovern simply because opposition teams have cottoned on to our reliance on him

I would hope we have a look at all options as we need midfielders and we need them now. I think the best clubs don't get hung up about trading players if it improves their future. Look at Hawthorn for example.
