Given the general feeling that we'll slide next year (that I don't necessarily agree with), plus the supposed much better draft...could offering our first next year could potentially net us a top 5 pick this year?
Pretty big gamble and I'm not suggesting doing it, but worth a discussion perhaps.
People might hate on me but I'd do next years first and this years second plus any fringe player for a top 10 pick this year. We need to get our new midfield rolling asap

Eg we get saints pick 8.

Saints get pick 30 plus future first

They win trade but we get two good mids and contend sooner

That's way overpaying though. Next year's first on its own should be able to get us a top 10 this year.

We have 3 big selling points:
-next year's draft much stronger (supposedly)
-we've lost 2 Brownlow medalists and 6 retirees
-we have a top 6 draw

We're effectively gambling on how well we do next year. We slide and our opponents win. The general feeling around the AFL is that we'll fall, we could attempt to exploit that and back ourselves in.

Saints picks 7/8 would be the obvious ones to target.

Obviously depends on an intimate knowledge of the drafts which I simply don't have.

Tge trouble is that most teams would prefer to use this years pick. I wouldn't give up 13 this year for GC first next year even though it'd be a top 5 pick simply because we can't afford to wait. We need to pay overs for the risk because it's the only option we have. Obviously we'd try just a swap of firsts but I'd be willing to do more. We would definitely have players to target with both our firsts and be confident of contending again soon

That's why the Saints picks are the ones to target imo.

Comes down to how they rate the drafts really. They'll still keep a top 10 pick for this year. Then they either get two shots at it next year in the stronger draft, or they have trade bait for next period if they don't look like being able to shake someone loose this year, which it sounds like they want to.

Either way it's an interesting option imo. Only a matter of time before teams start taking these sort of punts imo. I reckon we're in a perfect spot this year where everyone thinks we'll slide, but I don't necessarily think we will with a new mid setup.

Monocle (or some other old fart ;) )can you give us any insight into how much a top 10 pick this year is worth compared to next or is it pure speculation?

I would be happy to trade our future second for an early 20's pick this year .
Get in oscar Allens ear and tell him to play the stay home card .
Or jordan houlahan who looks to be a forward version of yeo

You're probably right about Gov's value. If Gibbs is worth 1st+2nd, and Deledio is worth a 1st. Gov is probably worth Early 1st + Late 1st.

That's probably a bit more on the money, but the point still stands, Gov is untouchable.

Paging :megaphone: an old fart.

OK I will bite.;)

IMO this years top 10 is a little bit less inspiring than has been seen in previous years. No real stand out number 1 or 2 and in fact any of Dow, LDU, Rayner or Cerra could go 1 or 2. What has also complicated matters is that of those four only LDU finished the season off fit and playing, and the other three were not able to either compete fully in the Combine or play in the All Stars games. A couple with shoulder injuries that required surgery, was not good.

I would rate this years top 10 as being very solid without the WOW factor that the top 10 has had in previous years.
What does compensate this, is the fact that IMO picks 11- 30 are quite even and not that far a drop down in quality from pick 10, after that, pick 30, you get the normal decline in quality and ability.

Now I know there is always the temptation to build up next years draft in an unrealistic fashion,.... and...... almost as a throw away line as being a better draft, but IMO next years draft is going to be a ripper.

If the SA pair of Lokosius and Rankine were available this year they would be IMO 1 and 2.
Lokosius is going to be a star.
His senior debut for WWT in the preliminary final where at CHF he bagged four goals, was really something to behold.

I would not even contemplate trading away a first rounder in next year ( 2018) draft as I believe it will be, dare I say it , a super draft.

I could say a lot more but thats the short answer.

I tend to see it the opposite way. If it gets to the point where all anyone is saying is that next year is going to be better than this year and they want to bet on that at a premium, why not?

When was the last 'superdraft'? 2008? That didn't turn out to be as super as it was made out to be.

I definitely don't follow the actual talent as closely as you do - I am just thinking that these things have their way of reverting to the average, and if people start overplaying the gap between this year and next year it might be worth a go.

Good to get some insight. It's definitely an intriguing option imo.

So you would flat out refuse trading our 2018 first for anything in this year's draft? What if, as unlikely as it is, someone offered a top 5 pick this year?

I'll explain further, Kennedy couldn't crack a gig in hawks midfield, moved to the swans and has killed it. Ac Chee will do the same.

Now that you've said it, I'm gonna be sitting here waiting for it to happen. Will eat my hat while doing a backflip if it eventuates.

Probably 2013 tbh, I think when it's all said and done it will rival 2001. Probably won't top 2001 but I think it will be the closest to it.

Kelly, Bontempelli, Cripps, Merrett, Sheed, Barrass, Billings, Jones, Dunstan, Acres, Crouch, Lobb, Nankervis, Boyd, Pearce, Brown, Fantasia, Sicily, Hunt, both Kolodjashnij's. Also Jack Martin and Hogan if you count the mini draft from the year before.

Somebody on radio was saying schache from Brisbane could be available for s pick in the 20s. Surely that's a troll? Was pick 2 only a couple years ago and I can see him being a star. I'd certainly bid on him at that price

Doubt it, he resigned earlier this year so I think at worst they should get a low teens pick. Can't see him coming over here tbh as he is supposedly homesick and is from victoria. Hogan in 2 years time is our best bet at replacing JK imo. Hopefully freo remain in shambles until then, might make the decision a bit easier :D
