Agree with all you have said here.
Not sure why people think we will miss the 8 again next year.
If you have any sense of reality you would realise that Roo was not offering much influence on most games. Paddy hopefully comes in and fills the void, plus some. Battle and Marshall hopefully pushing for selection also.
Joey had become too slow and a liability down back. Savage, White, Rice or McKensie will add more to his position in 2018.
Armo added nothing for the whole season on field. If he gets on the park in 2018, it is a bonus on top of 2017.
Jack Steven was down on his explosiveness and should improve next season.

Without naming them, all the under 24yo players will improve again in 2018.

Far more improvement in 2018, and we are not really losing anything from 2017 team
Roo wasn't at his best and he still led the side in marks per game, was 3rd in goals per game, 3rd in marks inside 50 per game, 4th in score involvements per game, 5th in tackles inside 50.

I agree that by the end of the year he was basically a non-contributor, after Maddie's Match he was cooked. But saying he had no influence suggests you didn't watch or don't remember games in the first half of the year. Paddy has never kicked more than 2 goals a game and he's under a serious injury cloud that ends careers. I hope he does well in 2018 but he's nowhere near replacing what Riewoldt put out this year and an unthinkable distance from replacing Rooey at his best.

As for Joey, he was 3rd for disposals per game, 2nd for effective disposals per game, 2nd for uncontested disposals per game, 4th for rebounds per game, 2nd for metres gained per game.

Again, not at his best, but that's a lot of stats to replace. Of course he had influence. Pretending that White (some promise but only 4 games), Rice (0 games), or McKenzie (16 games but doesn't look impressive) could possibly somehow replace him in 2018 is just a fantasy. Savage could probably but at best he's as good as Joey was this year, he's certainly not streets ahead.

Agree that both Armo and Steven should be better next year, that's all upside. But we lose a lot with Rooey and Joey. If you're telling yourself otherwise then you might have a disappointing 2018.

Are you just saying the names of St Kilda players and saying you love them?

Do you really think Stevens is underrated are you just saying it because he's a St Kilda player?
No - not because he is a Saints player - only looking at views on this board

A few posts on our Fairest and Best board

post 1/ The former Dog/Eagle affectionately dubbed "Koby-Wan Kenobi" in some quarters came into our best 22 this year with his hard-at-it attitude and top notch contested work. Koby gained your votes in five of our wins this year including against Hawthorn and GWS and later on during the three week patch in which we beat Gold Coast, Freo, and Richmond. Koby also polled in losses to his old side the Bulldogs, and Adelaide.

In eighth, possibly the most underrated player in the AFL...

a few posts where he is left out

post 2 / A positive, to use the dreamteam scores again, is the improvement in the youngsters at the end of the season. normally you expect them to fall away, so it's a good sign they will go on with it.

Dream Team Averages

dunstan 87.6 last 6 - 109 - our best player since his return. future leader.
billings 94.6. last 6 - 106.5 - just get the goal kicking right and he'll be elite
steele 92.8, last 6 - 99.3 - just going to get better
ross 102. last 6 - 98.3 - probably peaked, but very handy midfielder
sinclair 78.7. last 6 - 82.8 - big upside
newnes 88.1. last 6 - 81 - peaked, but handy depth in future
acres 77.9. last 6 - 80.3 - so much potential, but who knows?
steven 93.8. last 6 - 77.7 - mediocre season, and fell away, need him to get back to earlier form next year.

so basically it was our youngsters that stood up at seasons end.

post 3 / In some ways this probably highlights Koby's inconsistency...

He was great in some games but bog average in others. Regardless I liked what he brought to the table this year, especially at bargain price.

Roo couldn't even jump off the ground and his stats were prob inflated by his excellent games Pre-knee injury. Paddy isn't a direct replacement. Skunk and Bruce will take his lead up running role. Roo was serviceable after the knee, but nothing we can't cover. This was shown when Roo missed a couple of games.
Joey got the ball handed to him on a platter this year as designated link man. Then he proceeded to try and kick it high enough to hit the Etihad roof while travelling 30m in distance. His 1 on 1 defence in marking contests was embarrassing to say the least.

Throw all the stats up you want, they were both cooked. Love them as Saints legends, but that is the harsh reality. Savage was 10 times better than Joey when he took over his role at end of the year.

He reminds me very much of bartel.
Bartel could play both ends.
I reckon billings could.
But if he prefers being forward leave him there.
Bartel played tall his ability to take a mark was a feature of his game, head over the ball in and under when needed.

Billings will be a gun but i think he will play mostly as a forward with some midfield time, he has already shown he can break a game open playing that role.

I watch Dees matches because my mates follow them, I wouldn't think he's that good, he does a couple of flash things every now and then but not often enough.
Gunna petracca, he's gunna be a superstar, he's gunna be a midfielder, he's Gunna win a Brownlow.

Maybe, most likely he's just a very good player on his day who teases demon fans by only showing up occasionally.

Take it to the bank. Gaff will be at wce next season.

There is literally no point talking about him. It'd be more fruitful to talk about getting Whitfield and Kelly when they come out of contract.

Gaff ain't going no where.
My sources tell me Gaff will be a Saint.

Take my bank or something

This is an alternative reality to what actually happened - Savage was 10 times better even though none of his actual numbers reflect this. :rainbow:

And unfortunately Nick Riewoldt's last 10 or so 'ordinary' games were still better than what Josh Bruce was putting together.
