The Blues were pretty competitive in 2017. The AFL obviously believe that we’re on the up, or they wouldn’t risk their ratings.

They have seen the power of a sleeping giant!

The risk is we get flogged and lose the right to ask for Friday night games for a while. We want the exposure of Friday night games, but dont want to look like a total shitshow when on prime time.

Our one showing this year was against Port. It... did not end well.

We want increased members, and prime time is the way to do it. Im just a little concerned we got them a year early.

4 isn't exactly a massive number, carlton vs collingwood will be fine 90k+ attendance and a close game. Dogs and Saints should be okay, Swans game the way they manhandled us last time is probably the one you would leave out.

It isnt? If every team got 4 friday night matches each that would make 4*18 = 72 slots needed and 2 slots per friday night = 36. As there is only 23 rounds I would say we have done well

Hey guys,

Weird suggestion but I'm going to put it out there.

Melbourne are trying to re-launch the 'Field of Women' breast cancer game this year, preferably in April/May to link to Mother's Day. Previously we've played against the Dogs and Hawthorn in this game, but this year the fixture (in just another kick) has totally missed the mark.

My thought is: why not Carlton?

The game v Melbourne is close to the right time of year.
Carlton has an ambassador ready to go in Olivia Newton-John (assuming she's keen).
It'd bump the Blues' attendance for the game.
It's a chance to create a new marquee match.
Melbourne's "clash" could be pink as opposed to white, also resolving that problem.

I think it's a really good fit...but it's something that needs to be run by the club admins.

So if anyone likes it and knows someone in the administration at CFC...would it be worth running it past them?

7 games at the G total and back to 6 home games at Etihad, shocking bloody fixture. Who gives a toss about the increased Friday nights as only one is at home.

Club obviously doing some pathetic lobbying as far as what fixture outcomes we want. Deflating.

Oh wow!

Every year there are fixture compromises, but we're on the right side of the ledger next season although there's always something for people to whinge about.

Getting extra Friday night games mean't we were likely to have more six day breaks, and while I'd prefer to have kept six home MCG games, clearly the club must've gained an exceptional financial advantage having the additional Etihad game.

Interstate games are well spread out, and the opening six rounds look good in terms of win potential.

8/10 overall.

Interesting article in regards to how we finished 2017. We had the equal hardest draw of any team in the afl playing 11 finalists. Courtesy of ess and rich doubles who both went up the ladder. We were meant to have 9. We may only have one double up v Adelaide this year but the potential of Coll, Melb, dogs to bring it back up to a pretty difficult scheduling if they all return to finals which is likely. The other side of it is that by giving kids games in enduring circumstances and conditions (finalists, away games v top 4 teams, 6 day breaks and travel) it sets them up for a promising future. Teams like Collingwood can rejoice that they might get into finals on the back of shit fixturing BUT we at Carlton take pleasure in tough games that are learning and development opportunities that will againbring the rise of the blue force that is within Carlton FC. Coll and ess and port will think they are bringing something with a finals game or even a win BUT it's only going to make that eventual fall much harder. Richmond have brought a false dawn for shit struggling footballers and their teams.

Look at the whole picture and we aren't given that good of a run.

We have 46 available which in a fair world is 2.55 each, but there is 92 slots available on Saturday Nights which is 5.1 each. Each club should be getting 7.65 nights games on the weekend, we get 4 Friday + 4 Saturday which is basically average so what we get as a bonus on friday night we lose on Saturday.

We also have below average FTA coverage to bring us back to the pack.

Everything balances out

Bazinga!!

Agree wholeheartedly, nothing wrong with Etihad it’s a great venue

Yeah, the main problem with Etihad is that it's not the G.
I think, to have to call it "home" after giving up our traditional home at PP is galling. That's why a lot of people don't like it. Otherwise it's a fine venue to watch the footy.

The only other problem is there are not enough points of ingress which can lead to huge queues at big games.

Does anyone know how a Carlton supporter will get tickets to the Geelong game? Is it just through Ticketmaster when they become available? This poor mate of mine hasn't missed a Carlton game played in Victoria since 1976. He's fretting about it and i have no idea how the ticket system works for away fans? Any advice appreciated.

Is it a classified marquee clash that will become a regular event like ANZAZ day etc? If thats the plan then count me in!

The HUN was making a big noise about the Pies' "dream draw" today. Called it "a major boost to Nathan Buckley's bid to end the club's five-year finals drought."
"This is it Bucks. No more excuses." (Sam Landsberger.)

Wow, pre-season has barely begun, but they're already setting Buckley up for a fall!

What I enjoyed was that one of the virtues of their draw was, they "have struck gold with double-ups against stragglers Carlton, Brisbane Lions and Fremantle."
What an absolute muppet wrote this article. Playing Brisbane and Freo twice means travelling to Perth and Brisbane, never an easy task.
And playing us twice? Let's see, we beat them in our only outing this year. I'm hoping we can double-up on that effort next season. Collingwood did not finish that far ahead of us, so they are one of the teams we should be preying on in 2018.

Hahaha, they could lose all 6 of those games the way their going.

Every year its the same story "Collingwood pushing for finals to save Nathan Buckley's coaching career" and then the AFL hands down Collingwood a luxurious (financial) draw. Many snipers will have a go at how Carlton don't deserve their Friday night clashes, but year after year a mediocre Collingwood have been given more prime time clashes than us, yet no one talks about them.

Wonder when the media will realise that Collingwood actually have one of the worst lists in the comp and with the rest of the comp (bar North and GCS) expecting to improve, Collingwood could easily finish bottom 4 next year. Its only with Australia's most powerful figure running the club that anyone still takes notice of them. On field Collingwood have been a mess for quite some time...

Well put, which makes Gleesons article even more disingenuous . I was only responding to the friday stats though

What’s wrong with it? Tell me...
- It's cold and soulless.
- The deal we got shafted with from the outset. Didn't see a profit for many years.
- You can't see the nearest boundary line from the third deck.
- The surface is shit and not good for the players.
- The stadium announcer's voice.
- The roof when open/sun glare.
- It faces E/W when it shouldn't.
- The post-game bottleneck is compounded by people getting to trains, trams AND the city car parks.
- Food more expensive than at the 'G.
- No green spaces.
- Screens are embarrassingly small by 2017 standards.
- Collo
- Car park cost ($25 to the 'G's $10).
- We seem to "host" Etihad tenants there which is no advantage at all.
- Harder to get to (that one's personal).
- It's not the ****ing MCG.

Need any more?

I can guarantee you this angle is 100% deliberate...
There are plenty in footy media world mystified Bucks still has the gig, and many of those have an axe to grind with Maguire...it’s a perfect storm made by Maguire himself.

And, if by a miracle, the pies play above themselves they will blame it on the fixture.

Win/Win
