Matched.
Sydney select Nick Blakey
195cm - 81kg
Did not have the year some were suggesting he could have had but none the less they will match. Does not have the strongest hands imo but the way he presents and his leading patterns are smart. His forward nous and ability to get to get to each forward entry is a positive. Whether he marks it or just contests and brings it to ground is a big plus. Also, having to re-rookie but not play Tippett hurts. A tall forward to develop is a need and with a bloke who had a few choices selecting Sydney as a destination they will not hesitate. He will fill out and could be a Daniher type for the Swans.

Again picking for Junior11

Pick 6 - Port Adelaide select Connor Rozee

The North Adelaide midfielder would’ve been disappointed with his Under 18 championships, producing a subpar effort on what would’ve been expected from the half-forward/midfielder. But he returned to form in the SANFL league competition with some impressive showings — including in North Adelaide’s finals campaign, suggesting he is well and truly in the mix for a top-five selection. He’s a good ball-user and can hit the scoreboard when he plays across half-forward. Rozee looks most damaging when he is around the ball and possesses good footy smarts. Will be handy for Port since they lost Jared Polec and Chad Wingard

Pick 7

Ben King - Sandringham Dragons - Vic Metro

Locked in the Tom Lynch replacement, now the Steven May replacement. Ben King has all the athleticism his brother does at the opposite end of the ground. Fast off the mark, with a great reach and really strong hands he has all the tools to be an elite FB. Has an excellent goal sense when up forward as we’ll and kicked 4 in the final of the under 18 champs against a dominant South Australia showing that he could fill a requirement at either end of the ground for the SUNS. Being identical twins and their desire to play together would make the Gold Coast an appealing prospect, being the only team with multiple top 10 picks. The twins at either end of the ground secures the long term KPP spots at the SUNS for the future and both look like stars in the making.

In the mix: Jye Caldwell has massive wraps from the club at this point. Explosive and versatile mid with good skills, it’s his lack of exposed form that hurt his chances. Bailey Smith was hard to look past but reports are that he wants to stay in Victoria. Big fan of Collier-Dawkins also but SUNS not at the stage where they can afford a high risk high reward selection.

That was pick 7 because Port picked an academy player and Sydney matched it

great result for the Suns.

Bookends with reduced go-home factor and Walsh solid citizen who the suns can build on.

Picking for gothedons

Pick 8 - Western Bulldogs select Bailey Smith

Bio: The strong midfielder has transitioned to a full-time midfielder in 2018 after spending most of 2017 playing across halfback. Smith can run all day and has the ability to outwork his opponents when games are on the line late in the last quarter. The Vic Metro MVP finds the ball in the contest and is a good ball-user. He has the ability to push forward and hit the scoreboard, booting three goals for Vic Metro against Vic Country. He was one of Metro’s standouts in their loss to South Australia, where he had 22 disposals, seven clearances and six tackles. He looks ready to go and should see AFL action in 2019. An Achilles issue hindered Smith in the second half of the year and the exceptional leader has the traits to suggest he could be an AFL captain down the track.

Would have taken Smith anyway. Genuinely see him and Walsh as the best mids in this draft.

Bailey Smith (184cm, 79kg, Sandringham/Vic M)
Position:
Will start as a HBF for the Dogs before moving to a wing then playing his career as an inside mid
My Rank: 4
Player Comparison: Dyson Heppell (but Faster)

Bailey Smith has gun midfielder written all over him. He is a zippy Midfielder at under 18 level, but has shown the ability through playing on flanks and wings last year that he is versatile. Was ranked at the very top end, and despite only playing 2 games for Sandy this year, his form in the U18 carnival showed that he will be a top player and a solid pic inside the top 10. As a bottom ager he already showed his prowess across half back being a playmaker who averaged 24 disposals (in 2017). This year for Metro he played through the middle and averaged 24 Disposals, 6 Tackles and 5 clearances a game showing that he is one of the best inside mids in the country.

Whilst others see a knock on him being his scoreboard impact, Smith proved the doubters wrong going forward and kicking 3 goals against Vic Country showing it was more a positional thing that has stopped him having a forward of centre impact. His contensted marking and his ability to leave his man a bit too much freedom are the two biggest improvement areas, but certainly not weaknesses at this point of his career. Smith reminds me of Dyson Heppell the way he can set up play off HB (As Heppell did in his junior days), or go into the middle and win the first posession at the bottom of the pack. The key difference being Smith can burst away from stoppages as well and get that seperation which Dyson probably doesn't do too often.

Smith looks like a genuine decade midfielder, and will be great learning from some of the young dogs midfield brigade to start. For those that think age plays a big part, Smith is also born in December, meaning he is one of the younger ones in the draft pool. If it was not for the achillies injury which saw him miss big chunks of footy, I believe he would be in that top pick discussion.

Will win clearances, spread from the contest and tackle hard. Great mid and pick up for the dogs! Will give my full bio tomorrow

Agree. Ideal pick for the Dogs, fits the role that Matty Boyd played very well.

Pick 9 - Adelaide Crows select Jye Caldwell

The strong Vic Country midfielder had an interrupted Under 18 Championships due to a hamstring injury, but has shown his class at school football and at TAC Cup level in 2018. Caldwell can play as both an inside and outside midfielder and has good hands in the contest, which can separate him from other players in the draft pool. While his limited time on the park makes him hard to judge, he has shown enough to suggest he could be worthy of a top 10 selection from a club in November.

Picking for PMBangers

Pick 10 - GWS Giants select Chayce Jones

The Tasmanian is one of the better draft prospects to come out of the Apple Isle and is well and truly in the mix as a top-ten pick. The midfielder racked up plenty of the football in the Under 18 Championships for the Allies, averaging 21.5 disposals (50 per cent contested) and 6.8 tackles per game. He has shown the ability to play across either flanks at either end, but will likely end up a midfielder long-term at AFL level. Jones missed the majority of 2017 with a nasty ankle injury.

Picking for Junior11

Pick 11 - Port Adelaide select Jordan Clark

The talented dual-sport athlete had a strong Under 18 Championships, which saw him earn All-Australian selection. The medium defender averaged 19.5 disposals and 5.5 rebound 50s throughout the carnival, winning Western Australia’s MVP. Clark reads the play exceptionally well across halfback and he also represented the Australia Under 16 team, where he claimed a five wicket haul — including a hat-trick — against Pakistan in Dubai in 2017. After the Under 18 Championships, Clark held his own at WAFL League level, including a 19-disposal and four mark performance against Swan Districts in Round 21. Ready made replacement for Matthew Broadbent and Jasper Pittard

He is definitely hardest to read as haven’t seen much of him this year I would be quite happy although some crows will whinge due to being a Victorian lad. Got plenty of upside

North match the bid on Tarryn Thomas.

1015 points owed.

North use their first 3 x 3 3rd round picks to match than go into a deficit of 2 pts.

Pick 49 used to match that and have a surplus of 285 points. That’s how I read it.

Pick 13 - Jackson Hately - GWS Giants

A tall and well built midfielder Hately is one of the most ready to go players in the Draft Pool. As long as he doesn't get injured I can't see Hately not playing Round 1, and quite possibly, starting in the centre square.
While sticking to the inside what is most impressive about Hately is his scoreboard impact, being a danger around goal and being a heavy accumulator makes him dangerous in the forward half of the ground.
Hately is one I had rated as highly as my number 2 player in the draft early on this year, so to snap him up at Pick 13 makes me more than happy.

If I had been around for my first pick Hately would've been the selection I made anyway

Considered: Something that will be a theme amongst my non academy picks is versatility. Durrsma who can fill a midfield or defensive role was considered. RCD for his midfield and forward impact.
