With the Swimming Championships held over the next few days to determine spots for Gold Coast and other results coming in I figured its as good a time as any to start talking about the Games

This Championship has changed from previous models and is more in line with the US model of titles before the major games. Will it make us better? Be interesting to find out

Other teams announced

As Host most team sports have representation

Swim team named

Athletics 109 squad

Gymnastics team named

Add teams/athletes as they are named

I cant believe that the qualifiers for a second rate sport in a a second rate sporting event are on prime time

With respect, but is swimming that important to people?
To enough of the people for enough of the time for 7 and 9 previously to cover them and to make make a profit from their coverage.

I might be biased because I used to be a swimmer, but I'd say swimming is pretty culturally important to Australia. Definitely our biggest Olympic sport.

Agree its a culturally important sport and our most successful Olympic sport by a long way. Plus we genuinely pushed the US between 1998 World championship and 2009 world champs and 3 olympics in between those years when lots of stars were in swimming and lots of world records were broken at nationals/trials for olympics, world champs and comm games. I don't think its a great TV sport, but its an important sport to the nation.

Happened to flick on the TV as swimmers were approaching their blocks for the men's 100m. Great to see Chalmers win to back up his 200m win after his heart problems last year. Didn't swim the 200m at national/Rio trials in 2016 despite winning junior national titles in that event several times. But he was the only one who swam a qualifying time in the 100m which was disappointing.

They kept saying he had never won a national title, but he has won about 50 junior national titles and also short course open age national titles and plenty of short course junior national titles, just that before he was 18 he only swam in the short 50-100m events at nationals, which the older blokes win these days and post Rio, he has had his heart issues which stopped him swimming in last year's titles.

The fact he won his first national title in the 200m the day before is probably as significant as any, because if he can become a top 3 swimmer in world for the 200m as well as 100m, it opens up medal possibilities in the 4x200m relay at Olympics and World Champs. I dont think the yanks will find another Phelps in a hurry, so that means they can be knocked off their 4x200m free perch and wont be as strong in 4x100m free. The yanks will be almost impossible to beat in the 4x100m medlay relays. A DQ is probably the best hope.

Ha ha, poor old Basil has no comeback when an actual athlete in the sport being discussed (Thorpe) comments.

Thanks 4 the coverage ch7, your commentators are cringe worthy.

Just to add to the previous, a 400 metre & a 1500 metre are so comparable.

She's throwing her career away. She needs to accept the funding of AA and get real about this or else no one will know who she is by Tokyo.
It's a real red flag when an athlete trains away from the AIS and programs

People are stuck in an Australia that no longer exists if they think swimming is a big deal. Typical person would ****ing struggle to name 5 people who wear the yellow cap.

So which Olympic sport do you think is bigger in the Aussie psyche?

7 obviously still think it's popular. I can't think of any other national qualifying meets that are televised on FTA.

I think people now are very cognizant athletics is the flagship Olympic sport even if Strayans don't necessarily do well.

The rights are worth a buck o' five and Seven show it as it's basically just advertising for the Commonwealth Games.
