I also disagree, that's a great draft for us considering the better midfielders were all gone before 21. Who would you have preferred over Taylor? McHenry would have been an okay pick but it's a bit of a wash, Sturt is an impressive athlete but not a need, Xavier O'Halloran might be a little less talented.
It's not so much the selections - they're all reasonable value at the picks they've got. It's the rationale and lack of awareness of our list. 3 relatively inside mids and a general forward? Doesn't sound like what the club has said they want.

I don't disagree that Curtis Taylor was close to best available at that point. I have Sturt, McHenry, and possibly McLennan higher than him, but that's just me (and I'm happy to admit that I'm a youtube watching novice). But you look at the insight into why they thought Curtis Taylor was a good fit for us, and it's the same old line... "Cam Rayner's best mate". No analysis at all of how he'd fit in our list. I'm on the Sam Sturt bandwagon, purely on upside, but I'm also aware that he's not exactly what we're after.

Next they've got Ely Smith because we apparently we're targeting big bodies. Except that the club are on record that we got big bodies in the offseason already, and now we need pace and outside run, maybe another half back. Personally, on that board, I'd be looking at Kennerley if the club knew they were interested in McFadyen and Berry.

McFadyen, yep, they'd likely match that.

Berry has slid down this season, but the club has undoubtedly kept an eye on him. If they rate him - and they'll know - I wouldn't be surprised by the pick at all. But if the club intend to take him and McFadyen, do you think they'd take Ely Smith first?

The club want kids that are ready to go or near enough to it smith meets that requirement along with mclennan who I like along with stocker or ohallaron duursma who seems popular might be light on for that but looks good

I’d disagree strongly that the club wants kids that are ready to go.

It looks like we might just have enough depth to pick the best talent that suits our long term needs and develop them in the NEAFL for a year or two.

If we get hit by injuries, well they get to play sooner.

Cal has us taking Valente at our first pick and offered this for our overall picture:

Draft picks: 18, 30, 35, 56, 78 (likely to use five selections)

The Lions will be hoping they can get through their first two picks without a bid on Academy prospect Connor McFadyen, and it's possible. That would be a bonus given his ability, despite a serious foot injury. Jack Ross is a strong-bodied midfielder who could be a chance if the Lions are keen to bolster that part of the ground, while they could also look late at Tom Berry, the younger brother of emerging Lion Jarrod. Berry is a midfielder/small defender with pace but had his injury worries this year. The Lions have been interested in Noah Answerth, a half-back from Oakleigh who was overlooked last year after fracturing his back, and could give him a shot this time around. Tom Lewis, a tough ball-winner from South Australia, could be on the Lions' radar for one of their later selections.

Anyone want to help me out and advise who they reckon will be the top 23 in the draft i.e. first round of the draft?;)

As a few here would appreciate (dlanod blynd_freddie The Golfing Lion and others who I’m forgetting) there are big stakes at the Melbourne draft night to see who can get closest to the mark and I really do need all the help I can get.:)

Put down Sam Walsh.

It’s ok, I won’t so you can win outright. I will take Duursma as the scraps.

Like a few others on here I am not seeing the need for too many more big bodied inside types. Adding Lyons and Neale (admittedly a more balanced midfielder) has changed the dynamic a bit. When you look at our back up mids in Matho, Keays, Basti, Lyons Jnr and possibly McFayden, Robbo and Lester there is a real lack of line breaking ability or outside class. Allison and Cox may fill that void but at this point in time have largely played in defense with occasion stints on the wing or half forward.

Agree to disagree can never have to much depth if it comes to our pick and there's a bigger bodied kid whose played seniors like stocker/valente vs lighter smaller type that hasn't I know who I'd pick

"the Dockers have shown a little interest in local mature-ager Tobe Watson, a 20-year-old defender for Swan Districts. Watson has been overlooked at the draft a couple of years ago, but improved this season and tested at the WA state Combine."

Can see where your coming from but with 5 picks another big body is a must basti is finished lyons jnr hasn't played a game and keays is medium size struggling for game yes McFadyen will add to list we have another 3 picks to pick couple outside runners

We still need midfield depth, now and for the future. Mids give you a more immediate return when drafted yes, but you generally want to still give them 3 years to develop and settle in. Id be very comfortable in taking McFayden and another ball winner like Smith in this draft.

I won't be surprised if Allison is drafted by another club late in the National Draft. *cough* Geelong *cough*.

There are a few clubs who are committed to drafting academy or father son kids with multiple later picks. These clubs are going to have quite a few picks shuffled to the back end of the draft. They might be looking at some of the delisted, mature age, and 19 year old TAC cup players with these picks.
You make a good point about the Cats drafting Allison - wouldn't surpise me either. When was the last time such a scenario happened, i.e. one team delisting, offering a rookie spot and another team gazumping?

Yep happy to take McFayden and even Berry. Hoping for some more outside/ halfbacks with our other 2/3 picks. In regard to your point on Keays, he plays his best football (admittedly in the NEAFL) as the number one mid. He may be medium size as you put it but he is quite comparable size wise with Lyons and Neale. If he is going to stay on our list I think it will be because he is forces his way into the senior midfield rotation with some Tom Mitchell like numbers in the NEAFL.

They’d need to be willing to take on his contract for the next 2 years and not sure they would have a huge amount of cap space available

Duursma being heavily linked by Twomey to the Lions as one that we are interested in. Not sure why he would pick Duursma at Ports pick apart from the balance of the draftees taken previously and hope it is more of a hunch than anything else. I'm still set for Duursma, Hamill, McFadyen and Berry.

Duursma Smith Mcfayden berry and this Answerth kid 19yr old half back that twomey mentioned sounds alright for 5th pick

Allison has 2 more years of contract with us, I wonder if Geelong is willing to pick up all. It's the reason I think he'll be with us next year.
They don't need to. If they pick him up on a lower contract we're on the hook for the difference

Answerth played at least one game in this year's championship for Vic Metro and from memory did OK. Not fast but tough. His brother Kade missed out on getting drafted a couple of years back and also has some talent. Was picked up by Sandringham in the VFL and ended up winning their B&F. There may be more than a grain of truth to our interest. The Answerths are Caulfield Grammar Old boys, as is Twomey, so he may have some inside info there.

Good to know, I assumed they’d be on the hook for the whole contract. Makes it worthwhile for another club to have a crack
Won't happen worried for nothing Alisons been training hard with us if he was going to be picked up cats would've done it by now he's going nowhere
