If this were to happen and we had surplus points do those points get returned to us on our last pick/ eg. Pick 78 is upgraded to pick 70?

If not then I can imagine a sneaky trade down in this scenario. A bit at Pick 31 requires pick 37 to match. pick 33 pick 39. So we downgrade a few spots in the draft and get given back some minor benefit "for free" by that club. Eg. a future 4th or even 5th round pick. Or an upgrade of our Pick 56 or Pick 78 this year by 2-3-4 spots.

My understanding with a single pick match, not in the first round, that the matching pick is simply downgrade.
Bid on at ~pick 32, minus the discount + the value of pick 35 would see us have 100 risdual points.

We match the pick at 32, pick 35 is then downgraded to pick 64. We lose pick 78 as we don’t have enough list spots available.

That’s basically the exact scenario on the Billy’s stretch example on the original release, like everything the AFL may have changed it.

I would but the machinations are a pain in the ass to calculate and live move picks all over the place. Perhaps not mid 40's but i wouldn't' be shocked if it ended up in the late 40's. The bigfooty mock draft had it at pick 51 and that was with knightmare not matching on either of Collingwood's two academy guys who will almost certainly will be matched and would have cost them at least two more picks in that range before 56. That would have meant it was pick 49. The rest of the academy picks there weren't unreasonable in their placement.

Still I think a bid for McFadyen comes after our second and before our third so makes it a bit of a moot point.
Thanks, actually the Bigfooty phantom is a good guide to what can happen, although the bids seem pretty high to me... eg Blakey At 3, Thomas at 11, Quaynor at 14. If he had matched on Quaynor it would have only eaten up Collingwood’s 41 and 44 (or whatever they had become) so we’d only move forward one place to 50, as one place is used in matching. I think that’s about best case scenario for us. Swans and North are the ones with multiple picks before us at 56, so we want early bids on Blakey, Thomas and Scott... that’s what’s crucial in us moving up the order.

If our pick stays at 18 (ie no live trading or pick swaps in next few weeks), id expect us to take someone that's seen as 'left field' again in that the media and draft watchers aren't ranking them as highly as us, like last year with starcevich. I'd be very happy to back in our recruiters to do that after the last few years too

Cal Twomey's update is in this morning. Has us tipped to take Duursma at our first pick. Also some mention of Valente if he slides past the SA clubs.

I wonder why he rates Duursma so low, most others have him around 13-15.

Yes agree early bids help but the same clubs are still in front of you with the same players available outside the kids bid on so in reality if you want a certain kid still needs to get past the other clubs anyway

Just read the writeup/interview on Sam Walsh. We need to be in his ear right from the getgo saying we will grab him in 2 years, 1 if possible.
He's impressive if blues do the unthinkable and pass on him we'll be a chance down the track to get him from suns otherwise I think he'll be entrenched in vic with blues

Unless the bid is not matched in which case the bidder takes that player and not some other kid we might have in mind.

My guess is it’s purely from what he’s hearing from club land.

Twomey annoys me he mentions duursma for us which is fine but he sits on the fence with every pick and has gws linked to nearly every player waste of time writing the article imo
Sometimes I think people forget Twomey is a reporter, not a talent evaluator.

When you have 4 teams (Gold Coast, Adelaide, Port and GWS) with 15 of the first 30 picks, you can almost be guaranteed that they’ll be linked to every player in the top 30.

Plus Twomey has to keep people on the hook for his Phantom draft next week.

How much will that cost ?

It is a form guide, not a phantom draft. He isnt trying to nail all the picks, just giving an idea of the talent and where they could go.

Yeah. Not sure Duursma is in my top 15 either to be completely honest.

Why's that? What sort of range amongst the midfielders this year would you consider him to fall?

There's a lot I really like about Valente. Would be very happy to pick him up. Seems quite a smart player and a great leader too. Bit concerned that he's a bit of a slow decision maker at times, but I think his positives make up for that. Actually reminds me a little bit of Jarryd Lyons in how he plays.

Agree. Was watching a few games where he was quite prominent in. His composure and footy smarts cannot be questioned. Has a bit of pace to burn too, but decision making is a bit too slow at times. Would not be disappointed at all if we picked him up at our first pick. Is our pick 18 going to be on Thursday or Friday night?

Thursday.

Anyone going to the Lions function on Thursday night at Marvel? I'll be there, a little disappointed it's over two nights though.

That's because the draft itself is over two days - 7pm on the Thursday, and then round 2 and on from midday Friday.

I listened to an interview with Sam and he said, whoever drafts him, he will repay the faith and he won’t be leaving. He was quite emphatic too.
