At that stage Port will have had their three first round picks, I guess Adelaide can move down and still get Valente if that's who they plan to take
I believe most teams will want to take the best available talent, regardless of where the kid is from. If there is one team that might trade an earlier pick in the teens, with the expectation that the kid they want might still be on board, it might be Fremantle looking at Ian Hill. But I'd expect they ask for 18 and 30 for 14 and 43.

Otherwise we might look to downgrade our first pick if all the kids we really like are off the board at 18, and feel we can get equal value moving back a little in the draft. I'd be offering 18 and 56 to the Bulldogs for 27 and 32.

I like the sound of Ely Smith as a backup to Duursma. Sounds like he has great upside even if he isn't a need.

That sounds fraught with danger. A bid on Ballenden in the late 20s or early 30s would wipe out more value than otherwise.

Also it'll only happen if West isn't bid on before us, I guess.

Two chances of that happening.

And no chance of this happening .......................:)

Balmer says we interviewed Sturt recently and had him at our first and also said we're into Ely Smith

For those draft watchers could Sam Sturt play HBF, he seems to have the physical attributes to play an intercept player but haven’t heard the option talked about

Twomey's late mail has us taking Smith with Sturt going the pick after to GWS. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Yeah, you get the front we'll take Smith. Not sure if it's a reach but we did the same with Bailey and Starce and they're looking pretty good.

Twomey's late mail: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-11-21/callum-twomeys-late-mail

Vic Country midfielder Ely Smith has emerged as a possible first-round smokey, after winning a late invitation to attend the draft on Thursday night.

Smith is a 188cm ball-winner who impressed at the NAB AFL Draft Combine and has been on the radar of Brisbane for some time as a possible addition to their midfield unit.

They are likely to consider a range of midfield/forward options at their first pick, including Luke Valente, Liam Stockerand also Xavier Duursma.

If there is a chance smith could last into the early second I'd be looking to try trade back and get a good future pick - maybe the dogs want to get up the order and get in another pick before West? Have no idea how feasible it is as I haven't looked at who in the early second might want to trade up but would be a good way to maximise value.

Of course with all the restrictions on pick trading (available list spots, not being able to trade out other future picks if you have traded out a future first etc) I expect there to be really minimally swapping going on and it probably won't happen.

Won't be home to watch the draft.......I'll have to catch up on BF via my laptop. Are we likely to get T Berry at all?.......and are we on both days? Admit to not following this years draft quite like I did last year. Lost track of it all tbh.

Smith seems like a massive reach hasn't even been rated in the top 30 for most of the year

Recruiter rankings don't always line up with popular opinion. Who knows where he's been on our recruiting team's board all year.

I'm not entirely sure why, but both Sturt & Smith excite me considerably more than Duursma does.

Same as any year will be interesting to see how close anyone gets to nailing the top 20 / 30. Just had a look at Twomey's 2017 phantom vs how it actually went down, even with inside mail from clubs they're still a fair way off. No matter who we get at each of our picks I've got my 'I can't believe he slid to our pick' hat on.

Hopefully it works out for the recuiters they seems to be getting it right so far

They also do take into account with the country boys that they don't have the same access to programs like the city boys so there is that scope for further improvement. Bring on tomorrow and Friday, my only query is if we take Smith do we really need McFadyen?

Depends how you rate him as a forward?

Yes. Mcfadyen has shown he can impact forward, plus has a huge range for improvement given he was playing cricket until maybe 2 seasons ago.
