I get what you’re saying, but seriously I still reckon it’s hard for clubs like the Saints to compete.
And we certainly don’t seem to be producing enough f/s either!

That's a bit simplistic. Look at Collingwood. We would have said the same about them two rounds in.

It's about having the players to execute. Carlton currently in the same boat... And even the dogs.

It's all about stifling the opposition and then scoring on the rebound. Whoever does it better, wins.

In terms of tactics, we brought in Playfair for a reason.

Collingwood are a good example actually. They have hit upon a way to move the ball effectively. Their win against Adelaide was when they were seriously undermanned. Ball movement through zones and under pressure isn't just about personnel, it is about preparation and ability to execute under pressure.

It's why after their win, a few of us felt it was a turning point for them. It wasn't just based on manic, suffocating unsustainable pressure... more about nuanced attacking, cutting through zones at different angles, good decision-making and skill execution under pressure.

I feel the "pressure" talk at the moment we all talk about tactically misses the point a bit about what makes a good team in modern footy, and that's the ability to execute and move the ball under pressure effectively and keep possession. It also gives your blokes a chance to gain energy to apply the pressure when you need to.

Blind Freddie could see Free Agency was only going to benefit the larger, more successful clubs. The players are getting paid very well, they're going to choose to go to historically successful clubs who are on the brink of winning flags.
Can't think of one top player who chose to go to bottom six club.

Not quite.

Players move clubs for many reasons, free agency merely allows this to be an easier transition than having to trade or delist and draft, thus retaining a person in the business who wants to be retained by both parties and allowing additions to via drafting / trading.

It's been made worse since inception with the effective bastardisation of the draft and trading period with expansion meaning anyone and everyone who did not have pre-existing concessions, or bought into those concessions, got bent over and screwed if they weren't lucky in how people progressed in the system during roughly a 7 year period. Which has since been made worse by the introduction of Academies further diluting the distribution of talent in the AFL system.

At its core, Free Agency isn't better or worse as a player will leave for a supposed bottom club if they're chasing opportunity just as they would a larger club gunning for a flag if that it what they and the club want to happen.

The AFL screwed the pooch, the bitch the pooch was fond of then bought out the pasta place where they smooched the very nanonsecond someone went "mini draft anyone?"

Players stay because they are willing to forgo the money to stay with a group of mates.

Anything else is a fib.
Except cases like d.beams with family issues.

You could be right on this and I definitely think FA plays a part in it for sure.

I just feel like there are a few clubs that just get how to play modern footy tactically and then create a strong culture and brand that is easy to teach their players... this obviously comes about because they have the most talented coach/coaches to design and steer everything. It just gives them a massive leg-up on top of the competition that flows onto things like FA. It's also why certain clubs develop players so well compared to others (like us).

I think it was Lloydy on footy Classified the other night who talked about Blake Carracella. He said that he's in charge of ball movement at Richmond and pretty much took Geelong's ball movement and combined it with Richmond's existing pressure game-plan (similar to what we have now).

The point of the above is, it is bloody hard in modern footy with the pressure and zones to move the ball effectively. It is the main reason why the skills of the players from teams that don't have a plan to move the ball in the modern game look so deplorable. A select few clubs (Hawthorn, Geelong, Sydney to a lesser extent... they are much more defense minded) have training and development that facilitates this ball movement... and coaches that come out of these systems tend to thrive, or at least teach their players how to move the ball in the modern game.

It's why at the very least to remain competitive and give our young blokes a chance to thrive (or at least assess if they have ability or not), we need a coach/assistants to completely change the way we go about moving the ball. Pressure isn't going anywhere, it's here to stay. FA rules and equalization may only get worse. at the very least we have to have a brand of footy taught at our club that allows the players to execute basic skills to a level that we can compete.

Whether it's enough is another question.

Part of our problem is failure to adapt to his defensive structures.

Sounds like we need a decent ball movement coach as well because our transition clown is failing miserably.
