St.Kilda's rebuild is 5 years and counting , they haven't been able to add an A grade star which is damn hard to do in such a competitive market for the lower placed clubs.
Cripps must have assistance next season , if Shiel were to give Silvagni the nod , he'd pull the trigger.

What assistance does Shiel give Cripps? They are completely different players. Shiel isnt inside at all. Look at his contested possessions.

He and Dow can play inside and out and with Kennedy also adding grunt the combined effect would see Cripps' workload at the coalface lessened allowing him more time forward where his improved marking and conversion again add to the entire picture.
I know you're desperate to take Shiel the following year as a FA and in a perfect world so would Silvagni.
When you're the 18th placed team in this highly competitive market and a genuine A grader says im ready , the list manager doesn't hesitate ...

a grade midfielder with breakaway speed means a lot less stoppages.

Completely agree. Shiel is a hard running mid very similar to Murphy without the kicking skills.. He does not take pressure off Cripps.

If Shiel maybe Kelly are the key targets next year then it's so important that this year we get games into kids and really have another big trade/draft period.

We need another 6-8 new young draftees (including rookies) and another 3-4 good FA/trades (Gaff Dahlhaus Brodie & Scrimshaw would be very good). 1 or 2 of the rookies spots can be about adding some hungry state leagues players like a Menegola/Lambert that are hardened and around 22-25 years old.

2019 is the about adding the cream on top and just a couple of draftees. A Kelly and a Shiel would be great

How you can think getting Shiel would not help Cripps out in the midfield escapes me...of course he'd help him immensely.

Any good mature mid will, he doesn't have to be the exact same type of player.

Shiel will help get the ball going our way and is someone opposition teams need to be wary of. He's a much bigger body than Murphy.

IMO just needs to be managed properly. Phillips coming through will help. I rate Phillips if he can stay fit. Kruezer needs to be 100% fit to play the football he did last year. TDK coming through who will be a gun ruck/fwd and we have Casboult & Lobbe as back up. McKay will be a good fwd back up ruck. In a year or two I would be chasing a gun through FA or trade

He'd play inside out, I'm not sure anyone believes that he's a Cripps/JPK clone.
Shiel is averaging 9.1 contested possessions & 4.5 clearances, he wouldn't hurt our contested game at all.
