Completely agree. Shiel is a hard running mid very similar to Murphy without the kicking skills.. He does not take pressure off Cripps.

Are you suggesting we are giving up possibly pick 1 for a midfielder without kicking skills? Cant wait for this.:thumbsu:

Lukosius is a talent, no doubt, the next Riewoldt, maybe, but we need midfielders.

Your post starts by listing all the gettable midfielders floating around. So there are plenty -especially for a talent laden but young team. As long as MM and Simpson keep playing we really dont lose anyone out the top end for the next few years, our list will look better and better to FA's . So I believe the midfield FA's will come- if not this year, then next.
But when you look at the UNIQUE talent that Lukosius has, there will not be the chance to obtain that sort of marquee player via FA. Just not going to happen. You grab someone like him when you get the chance. It may even sway some FA's this year to come across with Charlie and Lukosius in our half forward line. But if not this year then next year for sure.
We should also not forget that we have 2 second rounders that given SOS's strike rate should net us a couple of extra handle players- probably mids.

IMO just needs to be managed properly. Phillips coming through will help. I rate Phillips if he can stay fit. Kruezer needs to be 100% fit to play the football he did last year. TDK coming through who will be a gun ruck/fwd and we have Casboult & Lobbe as back up. McKay will be a good fwd back up ruck. In a year or two I would be chasing a gun through FA or trade

As I said yesterday, I would happily have Phillips stay in the ruck and move Kruezer on. It upset a few posters. But Kruezer is no key piece that moves the goalposts for us at all. Phillips, who can provide more first choice tap opportunities, and an improved midfield, can move the goalposts as far as performances go.

Ok, Arr0w what is the Pick coming back that is close enough? Say 5? That means (trying to keep it simpler) to get Shiel:

- We get pick 9 and another pick, say swap our 4th rounder for a higher GWS Pick
- We get another player, say Setterfield, and probably get no pick back, or
- We trade pick 1 to a third club for a few picks, say Adelaide or Gold Coast, and then trade one of those picks for Shiel.

That would seem the logical way to go about it should we have pick 1. Adelaide want the licorice guy for obvious reasons, as would GCS who will need to replace Lynch.

Gosh... I know Collingwood are flying but that Stephenson is a real prospect. Anyone feeling a bit of draft pick envy?

It comes as no surprise really. There were many here wanting to have a crack at him. Always knew how to get the ball, I think it was disposal that was a concern. SOS chose well with Dow. Stephenson seems to be playing as a forward- not the much more demanding starting mid role that Paddy is being given. It would be nice to have both- but that applies to every draft.

I was nearly goin to say the same thing the other wk i recon Phillips can be the next sauce
Jacobs. I recon the cats would love a player like Kreuzer there ruckman are spuds

Kreuzer acts as another midfielder when the ball is on the ground. He may not be as good at the tap work, but he has it all over phillips with regards to tackling, ball below knees stuff , pressure etc. The question is, Is it even an option these days to not have that extra "mid" at the centre bounce setup . We seem to be going ok with centre clearances this year. Less so the stoppages.

Id rather we would prioritize first use of the ball over a faux midfielder ruckman.

Great new for Carlton with Murphy re signing for the next 2 years , Would have been extremely disappointing to see a captain of a club leave specially when it has no benefit to his club as in a trade or getting picks back. Carlton need him more than any other club the next 2-3 years and would be great to see him finish a 1 club player.

Also would make alot more sense for Smurf financially as the Blues would be able to look after him with $$$ more than any other club
Well done Murph :thumbsu:

In terms of money I think we've offered him a lower wage than he would be used to...given his age I think. Prob still higher than other offers. But by staying loyal he's a Carlton person for life and the club would help him post career as well.

Hope he reaches 300 games and becomes just our sixth player to achieve it.

All of the talk of Stephenson is relatively pointless.
Looking like a top prospect, but not at all what we needed (or continue to need) going forward. In time, Charlie will play this role (3rd tall) and play it better.

Good list management is a sum of all parts.
We had already drafted and traded in medium and tall prospects and need to trust the process. Next step was (and is) midfielders. Even if Stephenson ends up having a phenomenal career, he just didn’t fit our needs.

Unfortunately, AFL is not yet in a position where you can stockpile similar types (because they are the best available) in order to develop them as a trade commodity. Some teams in the NBA are great at this - but they have so much more leniency in player movement that teams could, for example, draft a Stephenson (even if they don’t really need his type), let him show his talents for 12 months... and then move him on for increased return.
SOS sort of had this luxury at GWS but that is such a rare situation in the afl. We at Carlton don’t have this luxury. We need midfielders and we picked up a couple of good ones in Dow and O’Brien. Have faith.

That said, I do have an inkling that SOS is attempting subtle NBA-style stockpile of KPPs for future trading, but unfortunately so many of them have been off the park that we’re yet to see how much value any of them might have. And this alone highlights a valuable point: the hit vs miss factor on KPPs in the AFL is quite challenging... which leads me to believe we recruited so many of them in order to maximise our hits, and stockpiling for future trade would just be an added bonus if they all worked out.

Just imagine a world where all of Weitering, Marchbank, plowman and macreadie (KPD) and Mckay, Curnow, silvagni and TDK (KPF) are healthy and performing... we’d feel much more comfortable right now in theorising about moving on, say, macreadie for an additional first rounder.

Having a great tap ruckman means squat without the mid field- otherwise Sandilands would be the most value player out there.
Kruez does well at the stoppage and works his ass off providing drive and pressure. Anytime we look good, u can pretty much guarantee he’s a major part of it. Second & third efforts can’t be dismissed.

Apparently it will be officially announced tomorrow but it is a two year deal.

Bloody happy with this and I hope he can stay injury free and be a major contributor for the rest of his time at Carlton.

He's still a gun...some people forget way too quickly.

Vital to help Cripps, the kids and our ball movement.
