The only reason you sack a coach is if you have a guaranteed superior replacement, or if he stinks and has lost the players.

i dont rate pre season form at all so im judging our assistant coaches by 2 games so far this season.
One 4 goal win Vs a team we were favourites to beat.
One bad loss against a team we were favourites to beat.
Way too early to judge them this season.

Wines would’ve been perfect. He’s a beast, we lack inside beasts. We have plenty of inside players but unfortunately they are more seagulls than beasts.

Petreculle looks shizen imo. All athlete, no footy smarts. He could hardly get hold of the footy in the juniors.

Some good points you bring up.

A few of us here we put the issue down as coaches with 2 offshoots of that being poor tactics and in turn poor player development as they are playing in a system where hard work, tackling and pressure is valued over all else.

Why I feel we are in a precarious situation if we don't act at the end of the season is because, if we don't, we will waste years of development on our recruits from the past few years (hello Melbourne). Sadly it might already be too late. But make a move soon and we might still be able to salvage a few players from the wreckage and these players will be the launching pad for our next assault.

The most depressing/alarming scenario is the one many espouse "it's not the coaches, we don't have the cattle." That essentially means our drafting, development or both have failed because we picked a bunch of duds. Then we are in a lot of trouble and will take years and years to recover.

We can't just stay in a holding pattern because of our history and the need to follow the "stability" mantra for the sake of it. This will lead us to doom also.

Tough decisions coming up over the next few months. Will be interesting to see how we act and if any at our club come out of the pack and take some real leadership.

I think you are probably getting too black and white. We have been very good at getting B grade soldiers. For some reason we can’t get champions or elite talent at the same rate as the better teams. We have depth in the solid meh type players and a few with higher ceilings. I’m thinking it’s probably all salvageable. We need a director of football as a priority who sorts out the reason for so many holes in the list and helps identify issues in the game plan. Experienced assistants who lead their lines but still know what is expected by the head coach etc. its not Armageddon it’s more just poorly run.

Right now we are in the no mans land where a few guns could transform us but we are so unattractive as a destination no one will come. I hope someone ruffles feathers and gets a review done like Richmond did. It’s more everyone in the whole place needs to be kicked up the arse and start moving forward. This outpouring of displeasure can go either way. It will fire everyone up or pull the walls down. It up to the club to respond with actions.

I'm just sick of the Geary bashing. It's been happening for years from people who don't have a clue what Geary's role is (not you).

Obviously everyone would pick Hodge, so would I. Arguably the greatest captain of all-time, multiple premiership player, Norm Smith medalist compared to a guy that's come off of the Rookie List and in his 2nd year as captain, taking over the job from someone who is regarded as our greatest ever player.

Gee we don't even give them a chance anymore.

no disrespect to Gears ... he has squeezed every last inch of himself to make it .. works his ass off and is a great example of hard work and determination .. but he is the guy you want next to you in the trenches not the guy you want directing you over the hill ... its a tough gig he has come in out of the shadow of our greatest captain and one of the comps greatest captains in Rooey but where we are at right now im not sure if he is the type of leader we need .. but he is the leader we have

In hindsight we should’ve kept Joey on but at the time it seemed like an okay idea. I guess the players weren’t ready for the leadership void left from his departure.

i agree Gears is the only choice we have maybe Armo but he needs to work on getting himself right and back playing every week before you can consider him Captain .. Newnes Dunstan Weller are the next crop but you dont want to do a Melbourne and throw them in too early ...
ideally we would have BJ but we didnt go that path and at the time i agreed with the decision the fact Tom Lee didnt do anything and Hickey is now stuck in the VFL hurts that even more ... if you look at the guys we got in during that time our so called "moneyball" picks Saad Milera Lee Hickey we really fluffed it some time we try to be too clever for our own good

The highlighted is what we have to identify. We all come at this from different angles and are obviously working with limited information so it isn't easy but we can all pretty much agree that, with the picks we have had, we haven't had any young guys come in and take the competition by the scruff of the neck like other teams have had in the same period of time. We can go back and forth on whether we picked the wrong kids or whether a gamplan like ours stifles development but I am more interested in looking at the last 2 premiers and the Hawks to see how the industry leaders are doing things.

With the Bulldogs pretty much everyone at their club put the win down to Bevo coming in. He was smart enough to find a balance between keeping a sound defensive structure with pressure a given and giving players the freedom to express themselves.

Richmond were pretty much the same, Hardwick found the balance so that players were trained and gained the composure to decide when to attack and defend in game and to have fun when doing it.

We need to examine what it is holding our young blokes back. Of course it is likely a combination of things including Trout picking the wrong kids but, even if that is the case, we need to make sure that the gameplan we have gives our young guys the tools to blossom like you see at the top clubs in the competition.
