The AFL will not increase the goalsquare to 18 metres but there will be other changes in 2019

THE AFL will make a change to its kick-out rules next year but will not increase its goalsquare to 18 metres.

The Herald Sun understands that instead of radical changes that were proposed mid-year the league will instead make a number of tweaks to arrest the low-scoring football of the past five seasons.

At one stage this year the league seemed likely to bring in an 18 metre goalsquare and a rigid zones format across all stoppages.

BUCKY: WHICH PIES WILL BE THE DIFFERENCE?

BUCKY: DO THE DEES REALLY NEED MAY?

BUCKY: SAINTS MUST PUSH ON WITH CLEAN OUT

But after a surge in scoring in the second half of the season and more attractive football the league has pulled back from that scenario.

It is understood instead of the 18 metre goalsquare there will be another alteration that will allow teams to play on more quickly and kick the ball deeper into attack.

The league trialled the 18m goalsquare in a series of VFL game but it has not drawn popular support.

Potentially players may be able to play on more easily or the man on the mark might be forced further back to ensure a team defending goals can pump the ball into the mid-part of the ground.

The league’s research found this year that a team was twice as likely to score from defending a kick-in than taking the ball end-to-end.

The league is set to announce its rule changes regarding eight key areas of football this afternoon.

The 6-6-6 centre square formation will mean teams must have six players inside each arc at a centre bounce, potentially with one player from each team in each goalsquare. It will make the wingmen some of the most critical players in the league because they will have acres to move in as the ball bounces their way at a centre bounce.

The areas of concern for the AFL include marking contests, deliberate out of bounds, ruck contests, holding the ball and runners.

Alex Woodward’s runner controversy, where he got in the way of a Collingwood players as Elliot Yeo kicked a key goal in the Grand Final, would be impossible next year.

The league is likely to crack down on runners being on the ground during play, handed only 45 seconds after goals to quickly deliver a message then get off the ground.

The AFL Commission has ticked off on a series of tweaks and interpretation changes rather than a massive overhaul.

The AFL believes the rules as written in their rule book can help save the game rather than altering them.

For instance the AFL’s umpires are likely to be stricter around the holding the ball rule when a player has had prior opportunity.

Rather than introducing a team prior opportunity rule or abolishing it as Nathan Buckley has suggested, they will police it more firmly.

If a player has had prior opportunity he must dispose of the ball legally rather than many of the half-hearted attempts that currently take place.

No Extended Goal square.

I’m thankful for that. Perhaps that was their plan all along, use the goal square as the distraction whilst they ram the other changes through.

I always think what leads to most of the congestion is the game being over adjudicated, the constant stoppages allow players to get back into position and hoard around the ball. The fact umpires are now going to be even more strict on the current ridiculous interpretation of holding the ball is only going to hurt.

Lol maybe coz the ball is in your fwd line to start

Get rid of prior. It’s the only answer. I’d also have one person on the mark and they can’t move like they do now.

So nothing will change...carry on.

oh sorry just on one point.

Umm hello, opposition teams will still be able to score from defending a kick in, just under this proposal there will be more space for forwards to work with.
Also teams will still kick in towards the flanks so nothing will change there if they go long, otherwise it will be normal programming with the short chip into the pocket.
The kick in up the guts in one of the easiest to defend and teams only apply this kick in if late in the game or they get away with it once and then stupidly think they can repeat it.

if a team does play on because the man on the mark is forced further back and WE do turn it over and have an open forward line

HEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOO LYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I think its quite simple.
The shit teams this year where really shit and therefore hard to watch.
The top 8 teams where good to watch.
The gap between the good and bad teams this year was bigger than recent years.

Leave the game alone.

Too many Friday night games for the most shit team in the comp so it looks worse. AFLs solution to ****ing up the fixturing is to change the rules :drunk:

I hate these F&%#&&g campaigners.

Anyway, if they do reward tacklers that get their man then we will have a much higher frees for count in 2019. Give the free so that the deliberate causing of stoppages is stopped (nice word play there if I say so myself ).

Otherwise haven't they worked out that the coaches and players will manipulate whatever changes they make. Idiots.

Rant over for now.

I would have stopped watching AFL if they brought in zones. Still would.

I'm glad they've scaled back the changes, but really, they just need to leave it alone. The AFL and rules is like a 2 y.o. boy and his doodle. Just. Can't. Stop. Playing. With.

6-6-6 IMO will mess a few teams up who love to run 1 or 2 off the back of the square at centre bounces. Running 1 or 2 off the back is also used as a tactic to clear out your forward line because teams who run 1 or 2 off the back off the square are already employing the loose man in defence play. 6-6-6 will screw teams up at centre bounces who love to run with this tactic, no surprise that demons were ranked 1 for centre clearances in 2018 employing the two off the back of the square tactic, going to very interesting to see how the demons tackle this.

demons were also the highest scoring side of 2018.

I tell you what though, LOL to the team who gets to play in the season opener who also gets reamed by the umpires with all these rule tweaks, hahahaha suck shit arseholes...

oh shit....hang on a minute...

we play in the opener, we get reamed by the umpires...

OH ****ING SHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTT

Yeah, but we can plan to be reamed by the umpires now. We just do what we want against Carlton and suck up the extra 4 or 5 goals they get.

And still win by 8 goals. :D

Just like KB & JB,We made the AFL change a rule,Once again.
Ruckman can now take the ball out of the ruck without being pinged for holding the ball.
Well done Grigga.:D:thumbsu:

Amateur hour at the afl, geez they are embarrassing

Its pretty simple

1) Holding the ball just needs to be tweaked a little: Currently the biggest problem is the interpretation of whether it was disposed of correctly in the tackle or whether it was "knocked loose" in which case its not a free kick. I've always been dumbfounded by that part of the rule. If you have the ball and you are tackled and it spills out, IT IS HOLDING THE BALL end of ****ing story. It shouldnt matter if it was dropped or knocked out, both are not disposing of the ball correctly and both should be penalised. They must also stop paying holding the ball to the poor bastards who sit under a hospital handpass, get smashed in a tackle the moment they catch it and then get pinged, have no idea why that is deemed as prior opportunity. Its not rocket science, it really shouldnt be this hard

2) Do away with the ruck nomination - wastes about 2-3 seconds. AFL players can cover 20-30 metres in that time, creating more congestion.

3) Throw it up immediately, clearing space and bouncing takes another 2-4 seconds, again giving more players more time to get set and congest.

4) No runners at all - **** em dont need them

5) Limit interchange to 40

Game improves

Youre welcome

So they havent got rid of the ruck nomination then???

lol go home AFL, you're :drunk:

  • I love the idea of being able to just play on at any stage during a 50m penalty.
  • I love the idea of the kick outs being about just to run/handball out.
  • Not sold on the set starting positions.
  • I like the hands in the back interpretation.
  • I dont like that the holding the ball interpretation wasnt changed.
  • I dont like the 3rd man up rule wasnt changed.
Overall its a 7/10 for me.
