I don’t understand why they don’t just scrap the 50m penalty. There’s nothing for me that ruins the viewing experience more than a 50m penalty - 99% of the time it’s for infringements that don’t materially affect the game.

Keep it for reportable conduct, otherwise make it 15m PLEASE

Wonder if we will persist with just playing 1 ruck?

Riewoldt will definitely benefit from that hands in the back rule.

Going to be very interesting how this will play on our defence.

Far-out those 50 metre penalties are going to give a huge advantage.

Kick-ins
  • At kick-ins, a player will no longer need to kick to himself to play on from the goalsquare.
  • Following a behind, the man on the mark will be brought out to 10m from the top of the goalsquare, rather than the existing five metres.
Jayden Short to be the defender with the highest amount of Score Assists.

Ruck contests: prior opportunity
  • A ruckman who takes direct possession of the ball from a bounce, throw-up or boundary throw-in will no longer be regarded as having had prior opportunity.
Grigg as second ruck should be ok with this.

  • Where there is uncertainty over who is the designated ruckman, the ruckman for each team will still be required to nominate to the field umpire.
How can the AFL be so ****ing stupid??? Just make it if a team has 2 rucks go up its a Free Against. It's not that ****ing hard.

I’m just confused why we are still playing on such a big ground. Surely, it would be easiest to increase scoring by playing on a rugby/soccer/gridiron sized pitch. I mean those deep pockets and wide wings only slow us down in doing what channel 7 really want!

Holy ****.
I just realised they've basically made it rugby.

The rucks no longer being called for no prior opportunity means a ruckman can just grab the ball and force another ball up...
...All Day Long.

Can see shit teams like Carlton implementing this tactic to force a rugby-like movement towards their goal.

It actually increases congestion.

For **** sakes AFL.

If I haven’t misunderstood it, it’s basically an 18m goalsquare

Man on the mark now stands 19m out
You don’t need to kick it to play on - so the actual goalsquare is made redundant (bet no one thought of that)

So you basically just get a free kick with the mark 19 out.

Jayden Short and his booming kick becomes really important here.

We now have a basketball style return the ball into play system from a behind. A fast player can get the ball and just sprint 15 meters then kick another 50. Our lock the ball in the 50 strategy just took a giant hit.

It’s a way of having an 18m goal square without having an 18m goal square. They’re just treating the fans as idiots

Just set up 2 players in each pocket to stop the kick-out players run.
But I agree it completely ****s us over.

Was just thinking the same thing, in a tight game with less than a minute to go, your ruckman can just grab the ball and get tackled, ball up rinse and repeat to the siren, watch the clubs go to town on these tweaks and the AFL crack the shits as the clubs are exploiting the rules to stop oppo's scoring instead of using the rules to have an end to end bore fest.

Not really and here is why and it's to our favour, we set up a bit further back thus reducing the team kicking in to be able to go coast to coast or get out over the back, what it also does is open up your forward 50 and if you have a couple of real mobile gun forwards who can use this space to their advantage then your going to have days out....hi Jack hi Tom. :D

So in effect when we turn it over, instead of going back into a crowded 50 we go back into an open 50.

The george's the rioli's the dusty's the caddy's are also going to have parties.

Oh and Dusty one out with hands in the back being relaxed.

These changes have actually enhanced us.

I think the ruck can still be pinged for HTB or incorrect disposal.....it's just if he grabs the ball and it gets knocked loose then he's not deemed as having prior opportunity.
I could be wrong in my interpretation though, much the same as the Umps in round 1 next year:huh:

Nope, he can grab it and not get pinged, with heaps of players around the contest all he has show is he is trying to get rid of it and ball up.

The AFL in their wisdom think they are going to ease congestion but in actual fact they are creating more of it.

Hands in the back rule, is this to position one's self or are blatant shove's allowed.

Expect relaxing of the rules by friday night round 1 after backlash from fans and media.

This one worries me a bit.....Umps already have difficulty interpreting the rules, how much difference is there between 'protecting your space' and a 'push in the back'
Too grey for my liking
Just had a read and it's to position yourself, but still all a back has to do is lop forward and umpire is going to think it's a shove, watch how many dive now if they have mis-read the flight of the ball. Got disaster written all over it, watch Jack or Tom get done in round 1 for a shove when replays show the complete opposite.

I hope the AFL are ready for the incoming backlash because it will happen.

Most of the rules are minor tweaks so wont have any real effect but a few are downright asking for trouble.
