WESTERN BULLDOGS

Draft picks:
13, 53, 89

Draftable Father-Son/Academy prospects: N/A

The Bulldogs were mighty firm on holding their first pick during trade period, indicating their desire to select a prospect in the second-half of the first round. It seems the forward-half of the ground is where their pressing needs, with Cody Weightman and Josh Worrell two such prospects. Weightman has great goal sense and x-factor around goal, with the lively prospect booting nine goals in four appearances for Vic Country. Worrell’s shoulder injury kept him out of testing at the national combine, but his athletic traits have been on show in 2019 as he has played right across the ground, using his leap to effectiveness at either end.

With us likely getting Ugle-Hogan next year, do we really need a pick 13 tall forward?

What type is Bergman?

“Athleticism, power, high marking and goals from range are the things that have seen Bergman draw into the first round conversation, with his ability to take games over slowly becoming apparent. The wingman/half-forward also proved a match-winner this year, relieving late pressure in the Herald Sun Shield Grand Final with a sensational pack mark to help St Bede’s scrape home on his way to best afield honours.”

Apparently according to Twomey we have interest in Miles Bergman
I love this, everyone establishes their ideas about who goes at what range and who is a reach here and a steal there, and then closer to the day we start finding out stuff like this and it throws it all in the bin.

I'm super guilty of it too. Big example is thinking Bont was a reach. I'll call myself out on it. But I've been following the draft really closely for a few years now and slowly I'm realising we don't know shit at this stage. As a result I'm trying to make a few of my own predictions that go against the established logic. Dylan Williams going high is my pet one. Weightman sliding is another. I'll probably be wrong on both counts but it feels more reasonable than accepting the current perspective wholesale, knowing that it's always off the mark.

DRAFT ANALYSIS: “A first round bolter, Bergman could land as a top 10 selection on the back of his enormous upside and eye-catching traits.”

BOLTERS are part and parcel of each year’s draft and Miles Bergman finds himself fitting that bill in 2019. A confidence player, Bergman has grown into his top-age season to become a lock as one of Sandringham’s first three players to be taken off the board come draft time on the back of a serious highlight reel. Athleticism, power, high marking and goals from range are the things that have seen Bergman draw into the first round conversation, with his ability to take games over slowly becoming apparent. The wingman/half-forward also proved a match-winner this year, relieving late pressure in the Herald Sun Shield Grand Final with a sensational pack mark to help St Bede’s scrape home on his way to best afield honours. Bergman’s enormous upside is undeniable, with all of his best traits desirable to clubs across the board.

STRENGTHS:

X-factor
Vertical leap
Overhead marking
Kick penetration
Athleticism

IMPROVEMENTS:

Consistency
Accumulation

Hitting all the buttons for me. Late improvement, X-factor, kicking skill, match-winner, position of need, upside, goals from range. Kinda wish I'd read this before the news came out, I might have gone early on him and looked like a genius. This is all the shit I look for to get excited about a prospect. Including his "improvements"; both things that can be easily worked on I reckon. Something like "kicking" as an improvement is much more of a red flag.

I take it you don't want to know what number I had Bergman, never mind. ;)

Is that the same St Bedes that Bevo coached to a Grade C, Grade B and Grade A hat trick of flags?

Starring for Bevo's old club isn't going to hurt his chances of getting to the Dogs. He'd have a big soft spot for the club that launched his coaching career.

Not sure Bergman is a powerful player, is still pretty skinny. Definitely has some weapons though and is a 'potential' player rather than one with runs on the board.
For what it's worth c42yourdoor usually gets good mail and said we are one of a few clubs into Rivers.

‘Special’ flag that gave mad Eagles fan a thrilling taste of AFL dream

September 29, 2018 – the day West Coast fans will never forget. Particularly Trent Rivers.
Not only did he witness his beloved Eagles – the team he’d supported since he can remember – win a flag live at the MCG, it gave him the smallest glimpse into what could soon lie ahead for him.
Few Eagles supporters that day were as invested as Rivers, who might’ve been Mark LeCras’ biggest fan before the goalkicker retired at the end of 2018.

As the Eagles gradually made indents in Collingwood’s Grand Final lead to eventually hit the front in the dying stages, thanks to that Dom Sheed goal, Rivers went into full-on fan mode.
“It’s definitely my favourite footy memory,” Rivers tells foxfooty.com.au.
“To go to the Grand Final and watch the game – that was special. It was a bit heart-pumping, but so good to watch them get up in the end.”
At that stage, Rivers was on the radar of recruiters following a consistent bottom-age year at colts level for East Fremantle where he averaged 18.6 disposals from 18 games.

But as his euphoria as an Eagles fan gradually wore down, the experience somewhat increased his desire to live out his AFL dream.
“Even just sitting in the crowd, you yell and you don’t even hear your own voice. So I couldn’t even imagine what it might be like if you were lucky enough to play a Grand Final,” Rivers says.
“Playing on the ‘G in front of 100,000 people, you just wouldn’t hear a thing but it’d be the most unbelievable experience.”
That prospect of playing on the MCG could be months away, with the silky, high-skilled West Australian defender set to be taken as early as the first round of November’s AFL national draft.
Just as exciting is the fact the Eagles have been one of several clubs that have interviewed him in recent months, although at this stage West Coast holds a bad draft hand.
Rivers was part of WA’s Under 18 championships squad in 2018 but only featured in one game, in which eventual premiers South Australia thrashed the Black Swans by 89 points. He was then struck down by glandular fever and tonsillitis on the eve of his draft season and dropped 7kg, ruling him out of official pre-season training until March.

But as he’s continued to recover, Rivers has gradually moved up draft boards as his 2019 campaign has progressed.
After a solid start to his WAFL colts season – he racked up 26, 29, 25 and 27 touches respectively in his first four games – Rivers starred for WA in his second crack at the national carnival. He averaged 22 disposals and 77 per cent efficiency across half-back to help his side break its 10-year championships drought and earn All-Australian honours.
Prior to last year, the Bullcreek-Leeming product had barely set foot in a defensive 50. But East Fremantle coach Jacob Brennan saw an opportunity for Rivers to develop his game down back – a move Rivers was initially hesitant about before warming to the idea.
“Every time someone would move into the forward line or into the mids, because we had a whole heap of backmen, I’d be first the one to put my hand up (to move out) – and he (Brennan) would be the first one to shut me down,” Rivers says with a smile.

“All pre-season 2018, I was trying to get out of there, but I quickly fell in love with the spot and I play to my strengths across there, which is my ability to read the play.
“I’ve got a bit extra time when the ball’s coming out of our forward line and I’m able to position myself really nicely. When I get the ball, my kicking ability and disposal efficiency are something that I really pride myself on.”
Rivers admits his early-year glandular fever setback meant he wasn’t fully fit throughout 2019, but that it also gives him confidence he could perform at a higher level when he eventually hits 100 per cent status.
He adds he was a lot more meticulous with his diet as the season progressed, adding that he’d dropped his skinfolds in recent months.
“I wasn’t (strict on my diet) at the start of the year, which was something that might’ve held me back a little bit. But over the last few months, it’s something that I’ve educated myself on, had a bit of help from some people and it’s been really great for me,” Rivers says.

Rivers is 187cm and 83kg as of this season. Colts stats below for this season

Sounds like we have our first pick.
