Can Bergman win enough of his own ball? Does he work hard when the other side has the ball? How is his defensive work and reading of the play?

It sounds like he has most of the other attributes we need.

Brad Lynch has some sweet skills but doesn’t get the pill often enough. I know Bergman’s not quite the same as Lynch but it’s a good example of why players need to be able to win their own ball as well as have good disposal, evasive skills and pace.
I'd say bergman is more in the same mold as greene

Hmmmm ... having only seen Greene a few times I’m not that much wiser.

I’d characterise Greene as a fairly good reader of the play but low production at this stage of his career (although I think he’s definitely worth persevering with).

Much as I like him I wouldn’t be using pick 13-ish on a Greene equivalent (but that’s probably not the point you were trying to make). Bergman would want to be offering a fair bit more to be a top 15 pick.

Miles Bergman: (Direct scouting report from his best game of the year)

Dynamic as ever, Bergman again showed his ability to do some freakish things with his work in the air and forward
of the ball in general. He built into the game slowly, standing up in tackles and marking well overhead in little
glimpses before coming to life as he rotated between the wing and the half forward line. Bergman adjusted his
linking play further afield to become the target himself up forward, marking high balls strongly in packs close to
home to find three of his four goals. His other major came with a classy speared finish from range on the run,
and he was in such form that he scored from a monster torp from the wing after the half time siren. He proved
the perfect wildcard for the Dragons, and will be one who is climbing draft boards.

Enjoy dog-watch and be sated knowing this tradie has a full ute of tools.

Thanks Yo-jim-bo. Good report and starting to sound more like a top 15 prospect. He does sound Miles better than Fergus at the same age.

Still nothing on his defensive work, though. Could he yet be a tool short of the complete player?

Could he yet be a tool short of the complete player?
Dustin Martin and even our own Marcus Bontempelli don't possess that tool either, that scouting report comes
from draft central their scouting reports are an excellent resource for those looking to dig a little deeper. That
game is Bergman at his stellar best or his ceiling until he masters the accumulation and consistency elements
that plague most of the young draftees with upside.

Weightman + Hilder really would address two of the biggest list needs, but have to say I'd be a little disappointed if our first pick goes to a small. If we want a small forward + KPD, something like McAsey + Cahill seems more exciting than this combination, but can't complain I guess

I expect this is our man.

It is hard to miss Bergman in full flight, with his rare abilities making him one of the more eye-catching prospects at the top end. He is the player who Sandringham and St Bedes looked toward to provide a spark or break the game open given the damage he can do forward of centre. Much of that comes down to his penetrating kick, which makes Bergman a player who has few disposals, but disposals which count. He often kicks on the end of short bursts through traffic, longer runs down the line or strong marks overhead, gaining massive meterage and giving those further afield quick sight of the ball. If one passage best typifies Bergman’s traits, it came in the first term of Sandringham’s preliminary final loss to Oakleigh where he marked strongly from behind between three opponents and roosted home a shot from just beyond the arc. His attack on the ball in that bit of play was terrific, and could also be seen in his 11-disposal performance for Vic Metro against the Allies where his aerial ability really came to the fore in small glimpses. That attack on the ball, combined with his underrated tackling means Bergman is much more than a flashy outside mover with a bag of tricks.

For all the frills and moments which stick in the mind, there are also periods of games where Bergman is a lot less influential on the contest. While the areas of consistency and accumulation were ones which he improved on across the year, his NAB League disposal high of 19 is by no means outstanding for a player who spends so much time up the ground. He admittedly is not the kind of player to just rack up the numbers, but just imagine the impact he could have with over 20 disposals – it is a frightening proposition. His 18 disposals, eight marks and four goals against Geelong made that Wildcard Round performance arguably his best for the year, and is probably more the kind of game we can expect from him at the next level. As he moves into the elite system, maintaining his confidence and maintaining his steep rate of improvement will be key to his success. Expect to see him star at the National Draft Combine after missing pre-season testing this year.

Yeah the more I read about him, the more keen I get on drafting him. I still feel like if we're intending on drafting Bergman, we can afford to downgrade our pick a little bit, in the interest of upgrading 53. Getting away with Bergman AND Pickett would be the dream, even though I know it wouldn't happen

Disagree. Bont does a lot of tackling. Complete player IMO.

I note they refer to Bergman’s “underrated tackling” in the post from Mofra above (Draft Central). I like.

Also the comparisons with the Bont. MB=MB? The Bont and the Berg!

Marcus Bontempelli:

2019: Inside 50- 123, Rebound 50- 48
2018: Inside 50- 86, Rebound 50- 26
2017: Inside 50- 92, Rebound 50- 28
2016: Inside 50- 108, Rebound 50- 30
2015: Inside 50- 105, Rebound 50- 28
2014: Inside 50- 67, Rebound 50- 17

Those stats need to be backed up by a sexy graph and some percentages, but visually a heat map is
emerging inside the vast expanses of my brain that suggests his role is seen primarily ahead of the ball.

Bont ahead of the ball is exactly where we want him. I dont think he is ahead of the ball enough.

Here is your sexy graph.

He is complete in that he can win the ball inside or outside and is one of our best offensive players AND also one of our best defensive players in terms of the amount of work he does when he doesnt have the ball - pressure acts, tackles, and the like.

He is definitely a level above Fergus but has the same strengths.
Good on a lead, strong mark. Nice kick of the ball.
I also believe he played most of the year injured. The only question mark I have on him is his ability to play wing at all level however alot on here aren't so concerned
