My read on the state of play would be something like:

Almost certainly gone by our pick; Rowell, Anderson, Green, Young, Jackson, Flanders, Aish, Stephens, Henry (9)

Likely gone by our pick, but possible sliders we strongly consider if available; Serong, Kemp, Robertson, McAsey, Weightman (5)

If those 14 are gone by our pick, the players I'd be most excited by are Bergman, Rantall, Pickett, Gould or Rivers in that rough order.

Having said that, our recruiting team have conducted countless interviews with candidates, their coaches, parents, teachers, associates etc, watched many, many more playing hours, training sessions, combine tests etc and weighed up angles none of us even consider so I'm gonna be pretty excited to back in whoever they choose.

Am I missing something here ... if we have pick 13, how can the 14 above be gone by our pick?

From all reports gould won't be going in the first round, if they wanted him they could get him with pick 18
You may be right, but I'm not sure it's that simple

Gould is such a a polarising player, with really good strengths and clear issues that ciubs are going to differ wildly on. Some will have him in the teens, some much lower

With live trading, anyone can jump in at any point, so if Port decide he is best fit for them at 15, they may well decide not to risk someone else jumping in soon after

From what i understand and what i am reading we are leaning between 2 players. With a mountain of work being put in for Pickett and Bergman at our pick 13 which will end up being pushed back to 15. By all reports we are in the hot seat to land either of those 2.

The Reality:

Pick 1: GC- Rowell
Pick 2: GC- Anderson
Pick 3: Melb- Young
Pick 4: GWS- Jackson
Pick 5: GWS- Green (Bid matched)
Pick 6: Syd- Flanders
Pick 7: Adel- D. Stephens
Pick 8: Freo- Ash
Pick 9: Freo- Henry (Bid matched)
Pick 10: Melb- Serong

The non-AFL aligned "dream":

Pick 1: GC- Rowell
Pick 2: GC- Young
Pick 3: Melb- Ash
Pick 4: GWS- Jackson
Pick 5: GWS- Green (Bid matched)
Pick 6: Syd- Anderson
Pick 7: Adel- D. Stephens
Pick 8: Freo- Flanders
Pick 9: Freo- Henry (Bid matched)
Pick 10: Melb- Serong

Oh for the dream to come true and restore my faith in the midst of the collusion shown by the empire.

Don't be surprised if the Hawks go Bergman.
It's possible (Clarko loves his long kicks) but they also tend to pick tall. If Port pass on McAsey I expect the Hawks to jump.

I suspect we might be into Bergman regardless of who is available. It's hard to think of a more Bulldog pick - late bloomer, low production/high ceiling, late birthday, no set single position.

In Gould’s last interview he said he’s lost 6 kegs and skin folds were down to 50 from 78 , sounds like he’s working on it fairly well
The Swans were pretty brutal in their draft camp interview according to Gould. The basically told him he won't even get a rookie spot if his skinfolds are above 55. Good to see he's putting work in now.

Some interesting comments from Twomey in his latest form guide. 2 that jumped out at me:

- Clubs deep into the top 10 (after 7) are starting to believe that Hayden Young may be the top end slider and may be gettable in their range.
- If Geelong trade up in to top 10 it'll be to nab MxAsey.

Would he? Inside mids they have. He seems like the opposite of what they need.
Pushes Jones and Spargo out of their rotations while Harmes is better on a wing/forward imo

You could be right, but trading in Frost being linked to Hartley having Frawley and Koschitzke plus their
history with the Lake trade and the ages of Smith and Henderson, Breust and Puopolo makes me smell
a rat, never assume with Hawthorn pure evil they are.

Does anyone think trading this and next years first for young is a good idea?

I'd happily trade next year's first + extra to try nab Young, but not both 1st rounders. Bringing him in pretty much guarantees that his brother doesn't have much future at the club, which seems a waste. In saying that, I rate him top 4 in this draft, so on picking best available, he's definitely worth both our 1sts in my opinion

That's surprising. I'll eat a steaming pile of dog crap if Serong ends up with the better career than Young. Would do the same for Jackson tbh. I really am not getting why the top end clubs are linked so strongly to those 2. Serong's disposal is awful, and Jackson is too short for an AFL-standard ruck while showing next to nothing at either end of the ground.

Young will enter the AFL and already be one of the best kicks in the competition. He shows vision and awareness that even some veterans don't have, and is a tough prick despite looking like a beanpole.

No. Hell no.
Posters here were very keen to trade up from pick 4 to pick 1 to get Boyd (missing out on Bontempelli) and also two years ago to make sure we got Coffield (ahead of pick 9, we took Naughton).

No silly trading up or down this year - just take 13 to the draft and use it. Especially if the alternative is to trade the farm to bring in a player we already have too many of.

Fair enough he's the only player i would consider moving up for, otherwise id be deeply considering a move back to get a combination of pickett mahony hilder gould shoenberg williams taheny, i will be happy with Bergman though, so all looks good

Going to bookmark this post. Not saying you’re wrong but just on the off chance! It’d be a fun bump and a great spectacle.

With chopsticks?

I reserve the right to serve it up in any way I see fit - I will fry it up, mix it into a cake, smother in sauce. I take inspiration from that book they get kids to read in school - "How to Eat Fried Worms"

Looking at the trade swaps done so far, it seems to trade up you have to overpay. There also seems a few teams well stocked with lots of 15-40 picks who'll likely be in the uptrade market, don't think it's a market to be playing in.

Reckon it's not a bad time to trade down and if we got a crazy offer on trade night, could do so, otherwise stick with what we have.

I feel we're keeping our cards pretty close to our chest this year. We may well be into one of the kids who slide and Power was pretty adamant about keeping pick 13 throughout the trade period.
