List Mgmt. 2019 Draft/Trade/FA Thread - Final Wrap

One thing about Ellis is we're adding a guy that can play extended time on field. Averaged 89% TOG this season.

The best teams have midfielders that can play 85-90% game time allowing their weakest to play ~60% TOG
We don't have that luxury with Miles (73%), Swallow (79%), Fiorini (78%), Macpherson (81%), Bowes (74% - injury affected), Brodie (74%) all pretty low.

I don't blame Greenwood
I mean he's 28 by next year
Has played 3 years only in the league and never really been paid - would have been on rookie level wages.
If someone was offering two years at 400k and someone 3 years at 600k - thats an additional 1 million guaranteed money

He's a good player and I think someone who will add something different to our team. I'd love for us to get him. His job is to provide a solid body and some experience for the next 3 years whilst our youngsters become 24 year olds. It's almost inconsequential what he does following those years.

Midfield time, can take a mark and kick a goal up forward. Swallow is basically the only one who has done that recently.

Kicked goals in 10 out of 14 games this year
33 shots on goal in 22 games last year.

in the last 6 weeks of 2018 when he had a bit of continuity he put together these games
17 possessions 4 goals, 3 behinds, 4 tackles in a 5 point win
21 possessions, 2 goals, 9 tackles in a 2 goal loss to a top 4 side
21 possessions, 2 goals, 7 tackles in a must win 10 point rd 22 victory as they're on the cusp of finals.

He'll be the one guy in really hoping we get.

Sold! I think those stats even undersell him a bit in terms of being a super high ratio of contested possessions and clearances. I know he usually rates through the roof with champion data as a result.

I didn't see all the game last night but would people say last night was a marked improvement on his Lions game?

I watched the first half only and he was pretty good actually.
Got back in defence a few times to help out.
Behind Houli and Baker was the third in their team for intercept possessions (6).

According to AFL player ratings was the best player on the ground in the second quarter when Geelong were making all the running - potentially kept them in the game a bit.

So the (realistic) dream scenario now probably involves us getting Ellis as a free agent, trade/s to bring in Hugh Greenwood and Brad Crouch from the Crows as well as Heath Shaw as a delisted free agent. That would be a big boost to our midfield depth and Shaw would provide some good leadership in our backline. Can our recruiting staff pull those moves off and what would we have to give up? Obviously the Crows will be looking to land Lukosius if we can convince Greenwood and Crouch to join us but I'm not sure how that plays out. I'd like to think we'd desperately try to keep Luko but I can also see the potential benefits of bringing a Crouch-Greenwood combination.

No to Brad Crouch - injury plagued, big money, give up a lot in a trade and gets a lot of touches but has low impact.

DAWN OF A NEW SUN?
West Coast premiership midfielder Chris Masten has parted ways with the Eagles, but he wants to continue his AFL career at the Gold Coast Suns.
That’s if the Suns want him.
The West Australian has reported that the 30-year-old will approach the Queensland club through his manager, Colin Young, after the Suns missed out on Shaun Burgoyne and reportedly Eddie Betts.
Masten finished his career at West Coast after being told his services were no longer required by the club.

F**k what are we? A retirement home?

Masten is hoping so.
Maybe he could come over and be our runner for the NEAFL team.
Pay him few hundred dollars a week and a free tattoo from a local artist.

Hopefully we know more next week, I'm not really a Masten fan but if we have extra list spots or some sort of concession like that (as part of our rescue package), then I guess get him in. Elite training, premiership player — just not that great.

So annoying that we are struggling to attract and overpay bog standard players while our best get poached away for nothing or draft picks that if we get right repeat the cycle or get wrong and are moved on for 4th rounders

Part of me thinks they should fold us so I can stop watching the VFL altogether

Not thought of this guy as an option but don't mind it - super fast, bit of height, seems durable, from a strong club, hard to get games at Tigers, would have a relationship with Miller and 2MP (Vic Metro) and Miles/ C Ellis (ex Tigers).

If we miss out on an Isaac Smith could be a decent Plan C.
He was best on ground last week in the VFL prelim which Richmond won.

The AFL needs to solve this problem in some sort of fashion that works for all the Northern clubs. We're stuck in the middle of it right now, Brisbane have been there and likely will again if their form dips, GWS leak players and will feel the pinch eventually, and maybe even Sydney too soon.

Victorians don't seem to care, they'd probably not even mind if the whole comp reverted back to the VFL to be honest.
