Yeah but these guys Heron, Schoenfeld etc.. are all contracted.
If we've got the cash to pay out contracts and delist those guys I'm ok with that.
Was just thinking about it from a capacity of either having Keays or a rookie academy kid.

Because thats essentially the choice isn't it? Do you think we are going to delist players mid contract?

He's kicked 11 goals in 30 games playing as a small pressure forward with a bit of mid time perhaps. Not exactly lighting up the scoreboard.

WHat many don't consider is that most of the games he played were very early on in a shite-house Lions team, playing as some sort of decoy defensive small forward. He improved considerably in the last 2 years and kicked nearly 50 goals in the NEAFL. Was also named emergency 17 times this year and broke into the team twice, and wasn't disgraced. Definitely good enough to be on a list.

50 goals this year **

+ he kicked 43 from 16 neafl games.
No one is saying he comes straight into our best 22.
He would give us even more depth in our midfield and forward line if we get hit with injury again

NEAFL depth as a forward mid. I'm not that familiar with the suns ssconds, did you have many players that dominated at NEAFL level?

It really just boils down to how you're going to use the concessions. If you disagree that's cool.
He's way way better than 90 % of our NEAFL team.

He's way way better than 90 % of our NEAFL team.
This was the reserves team I had in our best 22 thread
Could easily slot Keays into the midfield.
Not sure I'd say he's better than 90% of the team.
He's better than 90% of the guys who were playing last year - i.e.. 8 academy kids each week.

B: Mclennan - Graham - Burgess
HB: Ellis - Hombsch - Joyce
C: Hanley - Miles - Murdoch
HF: Holman - Corbett - Anderson
FF: Young - Day - Heron

R: Smith - GHS - Lemmens

Inter: Dawson - Riordan - Schoenfeld - Pick 20 - Pick 15 - Budarick

If I could delist Heron and Schoenfeld I'd do it and pick up Keays every day.

I didn't see many of his NEAFL games this year - just when we played them generally.
I am probably just thinking mostly of his AFL games earlier in his career.
If he plays in our team it'll be in that same role - small forward in a shite team.

Better than 90% you say.

Let's say this is round 1 NEAFL team

B Joyce Graham Burgess
HB Murdoch Hombsh McLennan
C Powell Miles C. Ellis
HF Riordan Corbett Lemmens
F Ace Wright Heron
Foll Smith Young Holman

Int Budarick GHS Dawson Fletcher
Em Rosas Schoenfeld

Still better than 90% of the list? I would say better than 2 players, some people would say 4-5. Keays had his opportunity with Lions. If he was in Lions best 30-32 he would not be de-listed. There are reasons why Fagan de-listed him.

No doubt Keays is better that Schoenfeld. But teams don't pay out contracts. In the end GHS, Schoenfeld, C. Ellis will play out their contracts in NEAFL providing support for young players.

I definitely prefer to get Rosas, put some other academy kids on rookie list (Ace, Gore) together with Riordan and even Fletcher and see if they can make it. Spots are at premium as we will not pay out contracts and we need to put some players from senior list to rookie list to make space for draftees (up to 6 - Rowell, Andersson, pick 15, pick 20, Budarick, Rosas).

By the way this team above would kick ass of Lions NEAFL team even without my favourite academy player next year Alex Davies!

100% agree with this.

Yes that's what l mean. Way better than the majority of the blokes who play most of the time. Which is usually a 2nd/3rd string team because of our ridiculous injury tolls.

Keays has time on his side. Still only 22.
Just needs a defined best 22 role to aim for... just not sure what it is.
Deserving of a 2nd chance though.

Walker similar to Hombsch. Not best 22 but handy injury back up.

Age not on Bastinac‘s side. And his best footy is behind him. Younger DFA midfield options available.

Why are you delisting him?

Because we have a great deal of depth and some younger options that are worth a look at senior level.

You don't get named emergency 17 times including the first final if you aren't at least knocking on the door. Suns would be silly not to give him a chance on a bargain rookie scale deal.

With our extra rookie spots we should be bringing in a mix of:

undrafted academy players; 19-21 year olds who are later bloomers who have a chance to be best 22; and some veterans who will work their backsides off to get another crack and will keep all the youngsters honest.

Some of those Lions delistings will fit the last bucket but so will quite a few others. Suspect we will have a decent size pool to recruit from but we do need to recruit some mature players to our expanded rookie list. We still have the youngest list in the comp.

Unfortunately there is a lot of players that are contracted that everyone knows are not up to it.

I think this year the rookie list may need to be used to move some deadwood off the senior list and re-rookie.

This will be required if they want to use the 4 top 20 players in the country, which is what they should be as opposed to taking a very speculative pick on a delisted Lion or a borderline academy player.

Next year's use of the rookie list will be different.

Fair enough, I don't know a lot about Ben.
It does seem a little strange that a lot of people seem to rate him, he's now got 4 seasons under his belt, should be entering his prime and you have to cut him without being able to get any sort of a trade done.
You've lost a lot of that depth with Cutler, Taylor, Robertson, Bastinac, Walker all leaving. I would've thought Keays at his age and 17 times an emergency you'd persevere instead of Christensen.
We might look at him but I would've expected him to be part of the Ah Chee deal if we were.

I’d love for us to get Ben, just so the Lions can hear all year about how they gave up this superstar footballer for nothing as we surge up the ladder

I would question that after Lions let go Taylor, Cutler, Robertson, Keays, Walker, Bastinac.

Let's say Birchall, Ah Chee and E-Y are in your best 22. Still probably 1-2 more de-listing coming (possible candidates Hinge, Lester, C. Lyons, Skinner).

Here is your depth with games played depending on your best 22 (10):
Mathieson(46), Bailey(27), Answerth(19), Lester(126), Starcevic(5), Cox(13), Eagles(4), Smith(11), Allison(10), Hinge(2)

Then you got 10 young players 1-3 years in a system with 0 games under belt.

For comparison Suns depth (12):
Hombsh(116), Joyce(63), Wright(66), Powell(20), Holman(43), Miles(88), Lemmens(87), Smith(115), Burgess(14), Corbett(9), Young(100), Murdoch(122)

Your list management probably anticipated he was getting cut anyway so why waste a list spot when you could always go to the rookie draft.

It’s also more the fact he was an absolute gun junior, 2 time all Australian and probably a first round pick if not for the bidding system.

I’m sure you blokes have enough young talent coming through anyway that its not the be all or end all. Think a lot of Lions fans have a soft spot for him being a quintessential Queenslander, and want to see him end up elsewhere
