2019 Expectations

Although there is at least a bit of history that shows that if a ball bounces one way OR the other, that chasm is not actually so big.

And yet it opened up the following week.

The bounce of the ball and luck is bulltish. No game can be put down to one moment in the game. Every moment needs to be considered.

Seriously. Do you reckon a head coach just stands in a room under the grandstand watching a tv monitor as the game unfolds and then wander back out to greet the players as they walk off after the game.

Terrible analogy. Head coaches have a lot to do with the outcome.
Mmmm na no they don't.

A chasm was the wording you used. A chasm between getting to a GF and winning one. Now you're talking about moments.

I have low expectations tbh. I think if Fyfe goes down again for an extended period we will be bottom 4.

The reasons for this are:
1) We have an inexperienced side with ~58 games per player and only 1 team made finals last year with <60 games experience.
2) Our midfield is unproven and without Fyfe would be one of the weakest in the league unless we see big improvements from other players.
3) The gameplan of winning by restricting scoring doesn't allow us to shoot up the ladder unless we win a lot of games and avoid ridiculous blowouts.
4) We are extremely dependent on injuries and we haven't managed this well for a long time.

On the plus side I will be happy if we see individual improvements, gameplan improvements and manage to stay out of the bottom 4.

Our Midfield is still a work in progress, gone backwards with Neales departure. So we'll see how that plays out.

Hogan is yet to prove hes over the Navicular. Assuming he is over it. How he gets fed the ball will govern his output.

Outlook alot more positive but along way to go. How quickly we make the deficit up we'll see.

We definitely need to be competitive and improving. Another year with multiple thrashings and games where we're clearly not in it would not be positive for RTB.

Hogan to build fitness, and play well in the 2nd half of year
Forward line to improve
Improved depth should mean peel finish top 3
Better run with injuries, resting players when sore
Cerra and Banshaw to show the benefit of a big preseason
Logue to cement his spot in best 22
At least 2 rucks off our list at end of year
Lobb to kick 30 to 40 goals
Ballas to be stuck in wafl

At the first centre bounce for round 1 2019 there's a fair chance that we'll see Sandilands, Fyfe, Mundy and Stephen Hill in the centre square. Obviously the experenience drops away quickly away from that quartet but there's about 900 games of experience between those 4.

Couldn't squeeze Brayfield into the side?

Sandilands* for sure, and I fully understand the hesitancy about relying on such an unproven midfield. We were beaten time and time again last season so expectations should be tempered.

Conca, Walters, bHill, Blakely and Colyer can rotate in as experienced players. Can Tucker return us something?

We definitely still need to fast-track our emerging midfield and they will get lots of opportunity. Valente projects as ready to go and Bewley too. One of the descriptions I read about Schulz was that he was a clearance specialist, so I am interested to see how that pans out.

Exciting times.

* we do of course have Lobb to support Darcy.

My expectations for 2019, as they are every year, is for the team to improve.

I don't see any reason why this team can't be at least contesting for the 8, I mean we've seen teams in the last 3 years turn around quickly especially Dogs and Pies who were down for a while before their runs to the Grand Final. The Tiges were at least a finals contender in the years prior to their 13th finish in 2016. 3 years out of the finals action is long enough.

There's a solid base of young talent that looks like it will continue to improve with more games under their belt.

With a bit of luck on the injury front I can see us jumping into the 8 and causing some issues for the teams around us. I'd also like this to be the year we actually beat Hawthorn in Tassie...or at the very least put in a decent performance down there.

To be pushed for a position, I'd say somewhere from 5th to 10th is about where we will end up. I'd be uncharacteristically positive and go for 6th and a final at Floptus Stadium.

All this is fine, so long as we as a club don't go putting a ceiling on what we can achieve this year. Nobody expected the teams that won the last 3 flags to be anywhere near the Grand Final, let alone winning it, so it's about taking the opportunities as they present themselves.

Yes Tucker is the one that I want to see go to the next level like Langdon did this year. Physically he looks to have improved, now he has to deliver when it counts.

Fyfe, Mundy, S.Hill, Blakely, Conca, Walters, Cerra, Brayshaw and Banfield with B.Hill and Langdon on the outside is a pretty decent midfield.

I think our midfield can improve substantially from last year if we shift Mundy and Blakely back in and get much more than a dozen games from our best players.

The mix of the inside mids is important. Playing Fyfe, Neale and Mundy or Blakely together in the middle doesn’t work so well because we get hurt when the opposition spread due to a lack of pace.

If we replace Neale with either Blakely or Mundy and have S.Hill available to provide the pace I definitely think we can improve on last year

He struggles to find a position, and a lot of posters on here (me included) don't have him as best 22. But his time is NOW.

May be optimistic, but surely you pick a 23 year old player like Bewley in the draft to play straight away?

We’ve added 8 new players in the offseason. 6 of which can slot in straight away and the other two could definitely contribute too. Going to be some awesome competition for spots and interesting match committee meetings. I’m bullish on 2019/2020.

Sure but 3 of those 4 have had injury problems for a while now and the other is 33. Hill is just as likely to be hbf.

Sure with Fyfe it's ok but without him a lot of our other players lack consistency (Hills, young players) or have some unknown (Mundy's 33, Blakely's a hbf, Walters should not be playing midfield, Conca injuries). Also if we are going to be playing a tagger which is highly likely your other midfielders have to win more possessions as one of your midfielders isn't really aiming to get the ball as a role playing RL tagger. Makes it that little bit harder to run over another team.

I'm not saying our midfield can't be good but just think we're not proven yet and a number of those players you mentioned have struggled with injuries of late unfortunately.

Modern football I don't think needs a midfield to really dominate all the time. Just to get enough of the ball and deliver it cleanly inside 50. Having a bunch of good forwards individually and a good forward team structure matters more IMHO than having a really dominant midfield. Just look at the most recent premiers for example. We've got the forwards as individual players part of the equation now, it remains to be seen whether we can change our forward structure and midfield delivery plan to suit. This is the biggest doubt I still have about Ross.
