Shame that the conditions are too bad to finish as would have been an excellent finish. At least some excellent images have come out of it.

I'm sure an avalanche has probably caused the cancellation of a winter sports event but this is the first time I've seen a landslide cause a cancellation of a summer sport.

Very bad luck. After so many hot days just a freak storm passes through and that's it the top of the mountain is coming down over the road.

Massive ride Bernal. Alaphilipe would have been 5 minutes behind if they did get to do that final climb. It was 7.4km of 7% average.

Laurent Jalabert on French TV with a good summary:

- shortening the stage kept Alaphilippe on the podium, as he would have lost even more time on the last climb.
- also saved a few of the stragglers. Given the pace, time limit would have been savage.

And, nothing to do with Jalabert but my own 2c ... if the stage hadn't been stopped, Simon Yates would have had another victory. Which also potentially kept Bardet in the climber's jersey. If Yates had won, the 20 points would have put him just 7 points behind Bardet, with a lot to play for tomorrow and Bardet not travelling all that well.

Kruijswijk the biggest loser today. Dude was pacing himself behind a teammate and then loses all of that time. He could have gone a fair bit harder imo

If "tactical riding" means that you let your main opponent and best climber in the race get 1 minute up the road on a major mountain stage 2 days before the end of the Tour, then Kruijswijk deserves to be where he is.

Against that, agree that Kruisjwijk would probably have put time into Alaphilippe on the last climb, so he's not got the podium place he probably deserves. He said as much in the post-race quotes.

Why has been shortened? To reflect the last 10km climb of yesterday's stage?
It's in the tweet from Bora-Hansgrohe above - landslides/expected landslides on the descent of Cormet de Roselend (which was supposed to be the first climb) after the storms

I've been loving Matt and Robbie's daily awards.

Some funny stuff with the media awards and also does a good job of highlighting some riders that may otherwise go under the radar
Would just be nice if SBS didn't cut to an ad break in the middle of their awards - every single night!

Kruijswijk was banking on using his teammate to drive the pace, helping him to make up time on Bernal on the road along the valley floor, before the last climb of the day. It's a decent haul along the valley floor, and he figured he'd gain more time there with a teammate than he lost by riding as his teammate's pace up the last part of the Iseran. His tactics were sensible, but rendered worse than useless by the decision to finish the stage at the Iseran Summit.

He & the others in his group also lost 10+ seconds grabbing bidons & jackets at the summit, only to discover that they didn't need them after all. That's 10 seconds the wouldn't have lost/wasted if they'd known that the rest of the stage was cancelled.

Don't get me wrong - Christian Prudhomme made the only possible decision, and he did it with enough time to safely stop the riders at Val d'Isere. The timing was driven by the weather conditions, and there was nothing he could have done differently. Unfortunately, the timing of that decision was beneficial to some riders, and detrimental to others.

The 2 leading men would have struggled to hold on down the valley rd imo with a decently sized group behind them made up of excellent climbers. There was no need for him to spend extra energy there with a teammate with him. He's been stitched up
