I am so ******* excited for McGovern.

He was one of my favourite players to watch and as exciting as McKay and Curnow are looking having a ready made key forward added to a young list is going to really step change us
MM could well end up being an exceptional, very upper echelon marking forward for the Blues.

After having watched him in recent years his stand out traits:

Marking - hangers and leads out in front where opposing players struggle to keep up. Great, clingy hands.

Excellent pace as per above.

Hardness - chasing defending player and executes bumps at right time and in technically correct manner. Enjoys hurting players.

Clutch moments - last 2 years kicked clutch goals in last minute of game after big mark (includes huge pack mark vs Pies at G 2016 and goal after the siren)

Kicks as well both feet as almost anyone in the competition. Very much under rated skill but you will like.

Footy smarts - tapping a ball on when appropriate, good vision etc

Versatile - as shown late in year he is equally adept both ends of ground. I play him 90% up forward and swing back for big match saving moments

Risks - Needs to consistently stay out on he park as had a number of injuries last 3-4 years. Rumours he didn’t always get with teammates and needs to be involved more each game to truly reach elite status.

Needless to say I am shattered he e Crows and think you guys will love watching all his talents assuming he stays fit.

FWIW I've been giving this a bit of thought.

I specifically refer to Bolts comments to Stocker immediately after he was selected.

Along the lines of "you're a competitor- and that's what we love about you".

Are Bolts and SOS concerned they have a few too many guys that aren't "competitors"? I.e. Pickett, Garlett, SPS, BSOS, Levi, etc and want more mongrel in the team.

It seemed an unusual comment to make to a new high pick recruit.

So BSOS has had two training days and hasn't faced a single even VFL opponent in anger yet he has no mongrel? OK then...

You could try answering the question.

I would if there was a question.
No doubt we need mongrel, not sure if potting a player who only just arrived is the way to go.

Funk - I reckon your interpretation of Bolts' comments is a bit alarmist to begin with.

He picked out one of the key aspects of Stocker's play that they really liked, and used it to give the kid a compliment after he was drafted. If he'd said to Walsh "You're a professional, and that's what we love about you" would you be concerned that, by omission, none of the other players on our list are professionals?

Reading far too much into it, there's nothing to worry about. Stocker is a dual-sided, burst midfielder who does his best work around the stoppages. But you can't excel at that role without embracing the physical nature of it, which is something that Stocker appears to do naturally. So yeah - the recruiters really liked how much of a competitor he is, and Bolts let the kid know exactly why he stood out enough for the club to make a bold play just to bring him on board.

There’s a fair bit of talent there and prospect for quality output next year. If some of these talented players start to consistently deliver, coupled with our regular quality performers, then we will have good depth next year and pressure on list spots

People often quote McGovern's measly 1.5 goal average as a slight against him. But I'd be interested to know how many games he has played in defence. Any takers?
At the end of next season how do we measure how many goals he creates for Harry,Charlie or anyone else playing in our fwd line? Just him being in the 50 will create more pressure for opposition defences.
Why are we even talking about this? It was plainly obvious last season that we need quality experienced players in his age group to take pressure of the kids.
If we took our 2nd rounders or the pick 13 to the draft i think it would’ve further unbalanced the list.
Our list was the worst in history in 2015 and Sos’s Job is to fix the list. When the list has matured then he will have the luxury to say no to this kind of deal.

You contend that he’ll never produce anything.

I know that one club had him at 15 on their draft list.

I am struggling to understand this. SOS obviously offered the preselection pick to every club and the highest offer came in at 42. If you are a club that rated him at 15 why would you not offer a pick in the 30’s to grab him. This makes it pretty obvious that the pick 15 ranking is unlikely.

Definitely bats deeper than I can remember for a long time. If we can have a reasonable run with injuries, I expect the Northern Blues to have a very good season as a result.

Does anyone have a copy of the Champion Data list analysis report which was published today?

McGovern plays. Suddenly everytime we go forward Charlie isnt going to be triple teamed. Or if he is, McGovern will demand the ball.

It's quite exciting to think about really.

You must be right.

The person I had dinner with last night who sits at the draft table of the club concerned, obviously lied to me.

Carry on.

You do realise that the person you were sitting with had every opportunity to pay up what he thought the player was worth right? and that it is this very fact that is making people raise their eyebrows regarding the logic of what your friend/you are saying...

I think the real thing we should be talking about is what we rated Garlett at?
It doesn't matter so much for what others rated him, any more than for how others rated Stocker when we had him at #6 and if we're proven to have got the deal wrong, we can discuss that then.

If offers had have come in at this 15-20, then maybe we would have taken him and worked out something else with Adelaide, but they didn't so the only question we should be dealing with here is: What did the CFC rate Garlett at and was he really only taken on to finalise this deal, which was always going to be tricky.?

Going to finally enjoy watching the reserves again :)
my old eyes gonna struggle following these jets around preston city oval - game reports might come across even more blurry and vague

Added bonus that if for whatever reason mid game we're short a defender, he can drop back and cover. Gives us a bit more flexibility when naming the team each week.
