Agree about getting in the best quality in we can but it's the position itself that needs depth for imo a couple of reasons (1) in case of injury, you need capable backups to come in and play at the level required (2) form and development, good players in form creating depth for healthy pressure on all playing for the same positions, having players developed through the NB's is also very important as well...

Just a rough selection of players that would give our list a much needed boost and would probably be a stretch of landing even three of them but besides Papley all of them can be required at a great price...
It Maybe only through my rose coloured glasses Soap but even three of these would give the list a great boost in depth...

SYD Papley- 23yrs- mid to late first rounder
GCS AhChee- 22yrs-late second to third rounder
ADEL McHenry- 19yrs- late second rounder
RICH Butler- 23yrs- third to fourth rounder
RICH Bolton- 21yrs- late second round
GWS Langdon- 24yrs- third to fourth round

I’d be very happy with any of Papley McHenry or Bolton. They would definitely add something

Which players on our list have trade value? Positions we have in surplus?

I'd say Liam Jones is tradeable for the right return (Levi was better in that role while Liam was out, and Goddard showed good signs before injury).

I'd also trade SPS if we could get a reasonable player in return. Something in the way he plays just doesn't sit with me....he's had a few ripper games, just doesn't do it consistently.

Won't be going anywhere for the next 3 years s_v

You can still get a couple of great young forwards after landing Papley at a reasonable picks, getting in early on them before they start to cost more, who have a few seasons under their belt and watch them start to blossom.
That's the approach I'd be taking, but again it just depends on who is gettable and wanting to play for us and can we amass the right picks to get the deals done too ..
We have players looking to come home, players looking for more opportunity and players getting better contracts so with some luck all these scenarios could help land us some gems not just the forwards but another young ruckman and a small defender as well...

Then maybe they are brothers:)
Sometimes it's those with different surnames that are related.

Let me tell you a tale, it is true, although the names have been hidden.

Around 10 years ago one of my good friends began dating this bloke called Aaron.

"So what?" I hear you say. Don't worry, I thought the same thing at the time.

My friend and Aaron have different surnames, so why was she so worried?

Turns out when her great grandfather migrated here many years ago, all his papers were lost. The man stole the passport of a dead man and assumed his identity.

The surname of the dead man is now the family name of her great grandfather's descendants BUT! It has no relevance to her actual bloodline. Her family had done some digging a few years before and found out their true heritage, but because their whole life for generations had been with this new surname, they didn't bother to change anything.

So what was her original surname? The name that ties her to her bloodline? Well, I can't tell you that, but it was the same as Aaron's.

****

Fast forward 2 years and she and Aaron are getting serious, and she can feel a proposal coming. She finally tells him her secret and it makes them both sick. They wish to keep it quiet but they need to understand their options. Both of them want kids, but prefer the type with 2 arms and 10 toes, no more, no less. They get DNA tests and look up their family trees. The wait for results is agonising.

Turns out they had no relation in the end, but the point still stands. Whether two people are brothers has nothing to do with surnames.

Walsh has trade value. We have too many (surplus) gun kids. He’s expendable. Get rid of him.

If the AFL give Gold Coast extra money in their salary cap, I honestly believe they'll throw a godfather offer at Walsh.

Could become the highest paid player in the competition.

In all seriousness I quite like Rozee.

As an aside I wanted the 3+6 for pick 1 trade. Not gonna lie if we had done that I’d be kicking myself right now. Bleeding.

I LOVE SAM. I absolutely totally completely and utterly love the kid.

Stalker? So?

On his own he makes the game fun to watch for me. He just tries SO hard. He is way harder than I ever knew. His speed seems to be improving ? He has much better natural body strength than I realised. Reminds me of a young Nathan Buckley. He will clean up his kicking. And then be the perfect perfect player.

Thanks for coming along kid. Has meant the world to this grumpy old man.

As much as I love Walsh if we had of walked away with Rozee and Smith instead of Walsh it would’ve been daylight robbery

We probably would have taken Rankine at 3 and then Smith at 6. So hard to say at this stage which would have been better but Walsh has been a great asset both on the field and in team culture and discipline. I would also say that if we get Papley that’s of more use to use than a 19 year old Rankine.

You’re right I was thinking Rankine was taken at 2. It would’ve been Rankine and Smith.
No reason we still couldn’t take Papley.
A forward line of

Papley McKay Rankine
McGovern Curnow Cuningham

That is the best in the league. I don’t think it is even close and that’s got nothing to do with how good Walsh is but just how good those other two are as well

That would make for some starting forward set-up and at best, it would have it all. What a bag of tricks it would make for.
If it sounds too good to be true though, it's likely to be so but even without Rankine, there's a nice look to that set-up should McGovern decide to switch-on.

I get the impression Teague wants our forward line to be dangerous, more so than being dour.
Of course every player should be there to put pressure on.......that's a non-negotiable, but some players are simply more dangerous and can manufacture goals through the slightest of opportunities.

Always gets back to - The more nervous back-men are, the more mistakes they're likely to make resulting in scores.
I'd like us to have this type forward line.
