The entire act, regardless of the potential reward, was so dumb it's not funny. However, I'm not sure that punishing him by giving him a 10 game suspension per bet achieves anything that won't already be achieved by suspending him for the rest of the minor round. The only thing I think the AFL could have done beyond that would be to have also suspended him for the finals, which would potentially cost him a premiership.

Dumb or calculating we may never truly know.

The alleged bets involved:

"Stephenson placed three bets. Against Bulldogs in Rd 4, Essendon in Rd 6, St Kilda in Rd 9. Included legs on Collingwood to win, winning margin, Stephenson to goal, teammates to goal, teammates to have certain disposal counts. Total $36"

With that same inside information if I applied it to a bet this weekend for the Pies, it can work out to be odds of $1176-1

So for a $10 bet, it can payout to over $10,000.

Rumour on the Port board that Schofield and Hinkley don’t get along and won’t be together next year

Meanwhile someone’s started a change.org petition to get rid of him

They’re a happy bunch over there
So delicious, but I hope the petition fails. We want Ken to stick around at Port for as long as possible.

it is an odd situation..I can understand the angst betting against your team as that induces a reason to not win / try etc and that can be match fixing. However betting on yourself and your team to win means if you don't produce the goods then you lose the bet. In no way is that fixing a match as the expectation is all players give 100% effort and ability every time they take the field

These are the alleged bets,

"

I again will reiterate the amount is irrelevant. He should have got a bigger penalty with none of them suspended.

Some of these legs can and could have involved match fixing. It questions the integrity of the AFL and the competition.

Another farcical decision handed down by the AFL.

I don't know if anyones asked the question. But the games Stevenson bet for teammates to goal, did he miss any easy shots before hand or make uncustmary errors, or hospital balls out of desperation, to the player he gambled on!

Is he really gonna think we believe him, if he says he wouldn't of taken the chance to help that teammate goal

I hate it when people yell out for players to "Man up". Have you heard of a zone defense people?

About the only time I'd consider it acceptable to yell that out is halfway through the last quarter if your team is behind. At that point staying in a zone may just let your opponents run down the clock with slow backwards and sideways kicks.

I have an idiot behind me who does this. Apparently we should always kick it and never kick sideways to switch play. Zone defence is a figment of the imagination. And he loves to say, "that's crap"

Holy cripes, if we actually bet on himself to goal or anything like that, goodbye. That actually really does threaten the integrity of the comp. Anything other than betting on your own team to win, yikes.

Of course, the AFL is up to its neck in gambling, so the entire thing is farcical.

Yep, I remember for a long time everyone would freak out if we'd kick it backwards and especially not across the opposition goals. Took a while for most to catch on, still get the occasional old school supporter who doesn't totally know what's happening out there.

Unfortunately no. Betting on your team to win can involve situations where match fixing is involved.

If you regularly gambled/punted you would understand the complexity of the issue at hand.

These are the bare minimum number of bets made:
  1. Collingwood to win
  2. Collingwood winning margin
  3. Stephenson to kick a goal
  4. Stephenson to kick multiple goals
  5. Collingwood teammates to kick a goal
  6. Collingwood teammates to kick multiple goals
  7. Collingwood teammates to have in excess of a number of disposals
That's seven separate betting instances (forming multis or whatever).

I think #2, #4, #6 and #7 are the most serious offenses and could have constituted potential spot fixing. I would have given him 8 weeks per offense (going on precedent) with no part suspended. And then for the remaining three bets, 8 weeks per offense with 4 weeks suspended.

Total: 56 week suspension, 12 suspended. Misses 44 matches, 2 year ban.

The fact he did it repeatedly, over multiple matches, and only "self-reported" after the third match would have weighed heavily on the sentence and should have contributed to absolutely no leniency whatsoever

If there is any evidence of spot-fixing the police will be invovled given it is a crime in Victoria

I am sure in those games in which he placed a bet they are going to be reexamined and scrutinized in great detail.

I dont think this is the last that we will hear of it.

"Why aren't they kicking it forward"

Hmmm yes to a bunch of oppo players so they can kick it back. So many older gen fans just don't understand the modern AFL game.

It's not how much he bet ... it's the act of betting on AFL games. All you need is some grubby crims to get involved and be making $$$ from this type of stuff and the game is officially done.

12 month ban should be the minimum - none suspended.

I get that he got a good whack, but it's the criminal activity it stirs up that bothers me. I hate the gambling side of all sport ... it's just asking for the underworld to get involved. What's the old saying "never bet on anything that talks".

Agree but to be fair we are often painfully slow at doing it, and end up kicking to a contest anyway.
