How do we develop if we don't draft? How do we replace retirees if we don't draft or trade? How do we......trading isn't going to fix us. neither is drafting.
it's developing what we already have. until we can do that, we ain't going anywhere.

I agree that's what should have saidwe can continually re-fill the tank with more players. but until we can develop them, it won't do anything.

I don't think people are talking about trading Ross for a draft pick or a kid. People are talking about guys like Whitfield/Coniglio e.t.c. Getting them at the expense of Ross plus picks probably would be overs which is what you'd be after, right? We'd still probably have Geary/Hanners/Jake e.t.c and Billings/Steele e.t.c will be leaders soon enough.Trade Ross??? Anyone see what’s happened at Carlton the last few years?
I don’t rate Ross overly however he’s most likely the next captain of our club, with the age/experience we need. I wouldn’t trade unless someone gave overs and we had experience coming back.
Would be demoralising for some of the players to have both Stuv and Rossy (our best two midfielders the past few seasons) leave, we need to build on what we have by replacing our list cloggers and even inconsistent players like Blacres/Dunny rather then a proven AFL player and leader in Seb.

that's not untrue, but if a bloke at 18 already has very good kicking skills, they don't disappear, great decision-making doest get un-coached. its damn hard to make an average kick at 18. an elite kick at 21, decision making even harder.
the simple fact is we haven't drafted the class we should have, Rising stars nominations and the lack of them from this group is pretty dismal. not too many of our draftees have come in and had an instant impact.
Big call. Won't surprise either.Billings
OK let's not trade and hope they turn out ok.trading isn't going to fix us. neither is drafting.

its a big step up from what is TAC Cup/U18s to even the state leagues. you need to be trained on how to play at that level. yes inherent skill helps, but there's so much that goes with it.
take Max King for example and derms words. which are spot on. he needs to be taught the craft.
Heres the thing...how much teaching did Carlton do to Cripps, Dogs to Bont, PA to Rozee, Melb to Oliver?
you can't teach a pig to fly.
Development is important, no doubt, but name a team that has developed a side to a flag rather than drafting class at the start.

I think if a big fish ala Coniglio were to come to St Kilda they would be wanting to contend, trading a bloke who has won a best and fairest and narrowly missed another in previous seasons would be a strange decision for a team contending.I don't think people are talking about trading Ross for a draft pick or a kid. I'd rather keep him but he's the cream on top sort of player and more value to a club looking at moving from finals to grand finals in my opinion. Probably one of the few players we have that has significant trade value. I'd consider it if it means we get a strong inside mid coming back our way.Big call. Won't surprise either.
Juicy.Billings

DeliciousJuicy.
To be fair.. we need a lot of everything..So... You'd rather trade an outside mid with some class and polish for another inside mid.
Exactly the opposite of what we need to do.
By us?So reported Coniglio has been offered 1mill x 5 years or close enough.. And he's weighing up options.
This gets me juicy and delicious. There's only one thing he would be weighing up and that money, honey.
Offer the campaigner lots of it. No one else has much.. We do ( well not in the bank, we literally have none ) but the AFL does.
I dont think he would come to us even if we offered him 300-400k more per year than the giantsSo reported Coniglio has been offered 1mill x 5 years or close enough.. And he's weighing up options.

We've offered him a significant contract. A lot bigger than GWS.By us?
I'd go a mill plus for Cogs, or better yet, $2m for Taranto and Cogs, divide it whichever way they want. Would walk into our team as our two best mids and solve a number of problems. We've offered him a significant contract. A lot bigger than GWS.
Needs to bite. Weighing it up in the coming weeks - which means he'll sign tomorrow.
Newnes is a FA so if we were to let him go it would be up to the AFL to determine what he gets.
Just having a look at the "formula" I think he's likely get us either a pick after where our second would be (26 at the moment which would go back after other compo picks) or an end of second round pick (a pick in the 40's after other picks are handed out).
Although if we were to land a FA ourselves, we'd end up with no compensation.
Big call. Won't surprise either.
