I don't mind the concept of taking chances on injury prone players but I'd prefer we do it for players that don't require much in a trade. Jamie Elliot is the kind of player I'd love for us to go for. RFA at the end of this year, and has proven he is capable of kicking 35 goals a season, something we desperately lack. I know he's had serious issues with his body, but with nothing needed from a trade perspective, we are in a position where his salary would barely be noticed in our cap.
+ 1 for Elliot. Playing him deep forward with Parker and Kent higher up the ground would be ideal.

Draper looks like he has got nice soft hands in the tap, but I can’t see much else that screams future gun. Happy to be proven wrong.

The whole thing seems bizarre to me. Even when we were chasing the big proven names like Fyfe and Kelly, there was really no noise emanating from the club. It’s almost as if we are doing his manager a favour. I wonder who that is and who else is in his stable?

Somebody give me $150k and Peter Dutton’s mobile number and I will go get you a 199cm flying Fijian who can leap like a gazelle, fly for a screamer, run like the wind, tackle all day, kick nothing but torps, and have the biggest goddam smile you’ve ever seen while he’s doing it.

Agree, we'd hold the upper hand, but the post I replied to said he'd cost money only.

A 2nd round pick and $1.7 over 4 years for a guy that was taken in the rookie draft, has never played a game and coming off an ACL sounds excessive to me.

It sounds Longer and Hickey style crazy. It's just absolute stupidity.

Could be a good Moneyball pickup draper.
425k a year is not huge money in the scheme of things, only above average (probably more average in 4 years time).

It is big money for a kid who is yet to play 1sts, but our cap is obviously loose as a goose, and while ess rate him and want to keep him, I'd be guessing they would be pretty tight budgeted right now with all the big names they have signed over the last few years (even if a bit of it is laundered).

I just want it known the reason i liked your post is purely because i enjoy the term our cap is loose as a goose
And if somehow nabbing this kid pisses off Dildo and Essendon then i'm all for it! 😏

We all know Longer can ruck , but that is all he does - we all know in todays game you have to be at least mobile enough to stop the other ruckman and Longer just is not able too - this is the reason he will be delisted.
They will find another ruckman who is younger and willing to go as a 2nd ruck until they develop and play a role in the team.
In 2016 Longer looked on his way to bring a Mumford style player. He wasn't great around the ground but he was showing plenty if aggression and having an impact.

He has shown no improvement since, in fact he's gone backwards in his around the ground stuff. Unfortunately he's just ran out of chances to prove himself.

It is the exact same way we threw 300x3 at freeman to pinch him from a seriously pissed off pies.
Yes that didn't work out because his injuries were too severe... but freemans money didn't hurt us one bit cap wise.

We still re-signed everyone we wanted to, and had truckloads of money spare to chase megabucks options like fyfe, shiel, dusty etc.
Plus we still would have still had plenty of room to give pay rises to any emerging stars- eg billings and gresh big deals this year.

So for zero downside- throwing 300x3 at freeman gave us a chance at an A grade talent for peanuts in terms of trade cost.

Same situation here- except this time with robbo, mccartin and maybe steven all gone- we've got even MORE cap we MUST spend.

You guys baulking at the $$ for draper are worried about a problem that literally doesn't exist.

The AFL keeps moving the goal posts, they changed the rules so that guys like Gawn could bully everyone with no second up rule, guys with limited skills but good tap work were back in fashion. We sell of Hickey cheap and they change the rule to make it easier for the athletic rucks with freedom to take the ball from the ruck and run counteracting the need for a pure tap ruck.

That is an example of buying bargain bin players for top price and getting nothing for it. Freeman cost a second round pick as well and wasted countless medical consultants fees etc. can't we just do it the old fashioned way. Get good players in the draft and stop trying to cheat the system.

So we should have left jack steele at gws then. Ok

Why does it seem that every methendon supporter thinks all of their players are worth 1st round pick but every other club's players are worth 4th rounders?

Brainwashed by dodo?

Its a shame , I thought the same - either he hasn't been able to get fit enough or he has just dropped his bundle - but we can't keep under performing players on the list forever.

I'm surprised you're surprised

Allan would of already ear marked a list of players we want , however it will not be until a number of trades take place before we finally know who we pick up.
I expect a lot of trades will hinge around Tim Kelly , Coniglio and movement of players due to salary cap.
The good thing to Know is Gubby would know exactly teams limitations in there salary cap having been with GWS , Lions and the Magpies.

He broke his foot in his last gws game and came to the club in a cast

He'd played AFL, Freezer was at the Pies for ages but couldn't get on the park. Last year we took 2 injured players with our first two picks, going after another guy on big money who hasn't played senior footy is crazy talk. We need some players now not down the road.

Spoiler alert, Essendon would ask for your first round pick. A usual Dodoro move but the fact that he is contracted, our only young ruck and highly rated at that makes the demand very reasonable imo.

If I’m saints I’m looking elsewhere especially with regards to potentially trading your first pick. A midfielder with speed is such an obvious hole to fill.

He’s uncontracted. I’d give you Newes and West Coasts 4th rounder for Draper and your third round. Deal?

Good rucks are good rucks. Taps mean nothing anyway. Why was Grundy and Gawn best last week. Better it was more than hitting the ball

What he has shown in the VFL is special especially to someone so new to the game. They guy is 203cm and already 100kg + but his mobility for his size is phenomenal, he can run faster than most rucks and he attacks the ball at ground level and in the air, he has a certain energy about his play that is rare for rucks let alone young rucks.

Ask any of the usual VFL watchers out of Essendon and they would all agree that he is a special talent with a unique skill set.
That's nice. Sounds exactly like something we already have.

Can someone remind me why we are pertaining this idea? It's nuts that even some on here are open to the idea.
