From a player inside the AFL system that the Brodie Smith talk has been around for months now and was shocked the media only got wind of it in the last few weeks. Im excited. If we bring Smith in, where will that leave our salary cap? He wouldn't be on the biggest money in the world but still imagine its around the 500k-600k a year mark. In my eyes we back the players we have to grow and get us a flag within two-three years and sign the young guns the money in years to come.
Don't think it would dent it that much. Hodge gone was on 350k. Remember lewy taylor asking an arm and a leg and receiving 350k a year and from memory Cutler was on something similar.
Hodge gone and I would assume either taylor or Cutler won't be around.

Hodge would have been on more than 350k.

I heard more like 7-800k when he first signed up?
So will free up a crap load of cash.
You don’t tempt a Champion of the game with 4 premierships up here for 350k.

Bingo. We had the cap and he had the on field and off field prospects that were very desirable to us. Small investment for the return we'll get.

And got!

From my understanding we were interested in Ellis last year before we got wind that Neale wanted to come to us. Our interest dropped on Ellis after that and hasn’t seemed like we’ve been keen since.

If we're looking to make a big offer to a star, I'd be keeping our wallets ready for next year, where there are much better players out of contract. One decent veteran like Laird/BSmith plus Ah Chee is a good enough period to me this year.

He isn't a half back though, he's a winger. We already have two good wingers and Ellis will cost more than he's worth. It makes sense for Gold Coast because they can't attract anyone better right now, and they're pretty starved for outside mids. We don't have either of those problems, so we shouldn't bother with him.

Laird is a duel AA / BF winner. I would say that is a pretty big fish. He would come in on big money.

Hodge was on 500K a year over 2. No way the old fella was getting talked our of retirement for below the league average.

That feeds more into your point though.

As others have stated with Hodge retiring, Basti most probably being delisted, Cutler traded and Greg Swan stating that we have plenty of cap space I’m pretty certain that $$$ isn’t a concern. Furthermore, with a very young list this also would add to our ability to have a fair bit in the salary cap.

My guess is that Basti would have been on good money as well - came to us at a time when we had to pay "overs" big time.

if its more than my estimate even better. I thought i read a while back it was 350k a year over 2 years. But happy if it was more. Means more to spend this period.

Find it hilarious how some journo's still can't get their head around the idea of Brisbane going after quality players. Saying things like 'oh yes Brisbane have asked the question of Brodie Smith, but he is contracted so that's not going to happen'. Then following it up seconds later with ' Papely is a big chance of joining Carlton, Daniher almost a done deal to Sydney, etc etc'
Not all journo's of course but a few.

The other thing to remember with cap space is that im sure we would have been front loading some contracts being in past years we haven't had the big name players taking big chunks of the salary cap. This has 2 big effects on our salary cap-

1. We have more cap space then we think when looking at our list. When you look at a player and think he is probably on 500k, he could only be taking 300k of cap space after having an extra 200k paid early. So sometimes you can afford more than you think you can when chasing players.

2. Paying extra money early has the downside that when a player leaves or retires, it might not be freeing up as much of the salary cap as you thought.

Brisbane literally brought in two contracted players last year - Adams and Neale (no idea whether McCarthy was or not) so pretty fair to say that any journo who says anything like that is a certified nuffy. It's getting to the point where I reckon we'll see more players being traded while in contract than out of

Bastinac was delisted last year, then picked up again in the Rookie draft. He would not have been on much this year.

He still had to be paid the same amount as he would have got in his original contract under the delisting/re-rookieing. I have no idea what he was on but the delisting wouldn't have changed his salary.

Next year or the year after isn't. But long term there will be issues. Got some young Guys who are all inline for a big pay increase in the next 3-4 years.

If our list managers do their job it won't be. Of course, it is impossible to keep everybody but if we lose good players due to a cap squeeze, we'll get a good return in the form of picks. Part of the art of list management.

But we will also have Martin, Zorko, Rich, Robbo all coming towards the end of their time within that period and will either be retired or on pay cuts to fit in the pay rise of others.
There is then others coming into that period of the careers depending on form and other things like Adams, McCarthy, Bundy may not last that long but he is another.
Out with the old and in with the new, so to speak.
We have the right people in place to make everything happen.

All contracts mean is a slightly better trade for the team losing the player.

Also Cameron was contracted in 2017

This wouldn't have impacted on his contract - just his status on our list.

It would've moved about $50k or so (equivalent to a 3rd round rookie IIRC) out of the cap, but that's marginal.

yep, extending players like Hipwood and Berry brothers gives us the room to move payments forward. Hopefully we can do the same with Clugga, Answerth and few others.
