I think the biggest mistake GC made was the priority players they chose. Ablett, Bock, Brennan, Rischitelli, Brennan, Harbrow, Fraser vs Ward, Davis, Scully, various other just about retired players.
Harbrow's been great for them, Rischitelli stuck around for a long time but had a lot of injuries and was pretty underwhelming otherwise.

Not sure if they had others to choose from

IMO the suns concessions are too generous. BUT as someone said it shows how dire the situation is there. If this doesn’t work then the afl will really be in a pickle.

Why do I think they are too generous? They get 4 guaranteed top 20 picks over 3 years. AND If they get 1 first round academy player over next 3 years and 1 top 20 Darwin player that makes these concessions equivalent of 6 top 20 picks for free! (And could top up with more ‘free’ player rated 20-50).

They have an opportunity to be smart like gws and trade for future picks to drag the benefits of these concessions out over the next 5-8 years.

Their rookie list extension makes the mid season draft a lame duck for other clubs. Gold Coast will pick 4/5 extra players who would otherwise be mid season draft picks for their rookie list. Of course some players (like nobles son) will unexpectedly pop up to get picked but suns can stockpile second tier talent.

Good luck to them, with Ellis, Greenwood in and picks 1/2/15/20 + any picks for Martin and Ah Chee they are well placed to at least solidify their performances like we did in 2018 with another year into lukocious, king, rankine, Ainsworth, Brodie as well.

On the flip side I don’t really buy the afl didn’t help us. I think we should have got more or higher picks (Eg pick 1 or 11 instead of 18 the year we got assistance), but the afl helped us off field with noble at least, if not fagan as well. That has proven to be the help we needed, where as Gold Coast clearly need on field help. These picks are as much about convincing the talent that’s there to stay as the new talent they will directly lead to. The pick arsenal also gives them the hand to retain pick 1/2 and trade for an experienced player (like crouch) this year. Eg 15 this year + 11 next year for crouch.
But I would also say GC got off field assistance too....Mark Evans CEO...and wouldn't be surprised if Dew wasn't an AFL selection

Cey at 3 years a good get. An upgrade on Mathieson and our other backup centre square midfielders. Should play plenty of senior footy next year.

There’s 31 games this year from Lester/Taylor/Robertson/cutler/Mathieson for a start and we had a miraculous run with injury.

Matho is worst persisting with IMO. He’s quite good a round goal, reminds me a bit of Jarod Lyon. He can still improve his footy and be a solid player in our best 22

Yeah I would love this to be the case but to channel my negative side for a moment..... I think it would be reasonable to think that with their draft hall from last year and 4 picks within the top 20 and the ability to trade the mid first round pick from next year for a top end talent and not mention the acquisition of Ellis could see them surpass us in the near future....and it could be nearer then some might think......time will tell ....would love to be wrong

They’ll definitely have the talent but even if it matches our talent I think we’re years ahead in other areas - game plan/execution, players trust in each other, players confidence in their roles/ abilities, knowing how to win close games, strength and conditioning, injury prevention/
recovery, playing in finals intensity (that’s been a major plus for the last half dozen games for us).

These all need real games for development and will take at least two seasons like it did for us assuming lacking talent is the only problem and that’s fixed by these concessions.

Just as important is the question ‘are Dew and co as good as Fagan and co? I suspect not - I think we hit the jackpot.

And yes, we did bolt this season but not really. If we’d had ‘win close games’ skill last year we would have been mid table and this years result would have been less a fairy tale a more of a reward for hard work.

No doubt Evans was parachuted in. But this is the most important piece of the help that the Suns get, the back end is vital if any of these draft concessions are to be successful. I'd say it's the reason the club ballsed up the first place.

I don't just think it was Fagan & Noble that we got from the AFL. I always thought Swann was the first one. Sent up by the AFL to take a lay of the land, have a look for a couple of seasons. I think at the end of his second year of being there Leppa was shown the door, and the beginnings of where we are now started being put in place.

Given this is the trade thread though, I should probably mention something about trading. I think we'll get Ah Chee for a pick late in the second round.

THE very best thing is what is not here. There is no talk of our best players and up-and-coming playerslooking elsewhere.

All the hoo-ha about brand last year was painful and I don’t miss that type of chat.

Note: It goes without saying except for Bastinac and cutler that is

According to Twitter, Noble commented on Birchall rumours, true?

it was on SEN

Brisbane GM of Football David Noble was asked earlier today whether Birchall would be a player the Lions would be interested in recruiting.

“Anyone in the space that allows us to improve our run off half-back and through the wing, without specifically commenting on Grant, they’re the areas we’re trying to look at,” Noble told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

Eight games in the last three seasons. That's not great. It's not like the Hawks have a bad medical team either. They back themselves in to get players right that others struggle with, same as what our team is starting to become.

What do you think of the Darwin zone/prelisting of academy players cotter?

Any chance the suns get a first round quality player for free over the next 3 years?

I’m fine with it. Yeah there’s a very good chance that they will get a player of that quality.

I think the situation is dire at the Suns. Obviously I don’t want to see them beating us anytime soon but they need to become a competitive side that features in finals and they need to do it fast. This is probably do or die for them and if the AFL are confident that they have the right people and support structures in place going forward than I really don’t have an issue with them receiving some help at the draft.

Some of us might not like it, but we need them to help grow AFL in the Queensland.

This could help with the possible Laird trade.

Manager seemed pretty confident that Laird wasn't going anywhere on Trade Radio.

Things have gone a bit quiet on Brodie Smith.

I know we're very interested. Maybe the ball's in his court.

With all these players the Crows are supposedly losing they're going to have incredible space in their cap.
