Oh I agree completely. I just jumped on their board when news of the extended rookie list broke and suggested they might come sniffing around guys like Basti, Eagles, Walker, Keays, Lester etc.... Did not go down well... Haha
The Suns are silly if they don't trade pick 1 or 2 for Bastinac*, Eagles, Walker, Keays and Lester. They'd offer great experience and leadership to their group along with some IP as to how the Lions turned it all around under Fagan/Noble/Swann and co. should get done early Monday morning.

*I'm sure BRAB would agree with me that Basti would be worth pick 2 on his own, would offer just as much as Lachie Weller.

Not sure why the club want him to remain Cat B because you can’t even play him unless there is a LOng term injury.
I know list spots are tight and I guess we have Payne in the wings but I would prefer him just on the Cat A list so you can play him if required.
They want Matty on the list because he is one of the spiritual leaders in the club. Even if he doesn't play a senior game, his presence around the club is a valuable contributer to attitude and leadership when it comes to behaviour.

The bloke is one of the biggest legends I've met in football. Genuinely good bloke with a great sense of humour.

I think Crisp had just started to show glimpses of what he was capable of , cutler on the other hand has already shown what he is capable of and just needs a team to get him back there.
Would be a little surprised if he turned out like karnesis.
Cutler has pace , big penetrating kick , evasive running, downside was maybe his inability to listen to what was required or simply couldn't follow team structures, who knows.
Tbh I'll be pi**ed if he goes somewhere else and blossoms like Crisp did.
The club has persisted with Cuts for a long time now primarily because of his talent as you mention BUT, if he cant follow team strategies/plans, he simply wont contribute in an acceptable level no matter ow good his skills are. That being said, If he goes to another club, I sincerely hope they get his head in the team game and he shows everyone what he's capable of because he has plenty of ability. I wish him all the best...even if that is at another club.

I'm frustrated with the Cutler situation. I really feel we are losing one here. The guy can play. We have seen some very good football from him already. Regardless he doesn't fit our plans and I think that has been made pretty clear to him this year. I'm frustrated for him and really hope to see him get a good run somewhere else. Best of luck to you Tom, just don't tear us a new one when we play you next!
Something doesn't add up with the Tommy situation. On the one hand, we have supposedly had a contract before him and tried to re-sign him during the year and on the other hand we do not select him when an opportunity presents. Part of the problem of course has been that few opportunities have presented this year because of our extraordinary good fortune with injuries.

I am always at a loss when the narrative of "not following team strategies/plans" is mentioned...do we have any actual reference to this being said by the coaches or is it just a narrative that has developed to rationalise Tom's non-selection? I for one will be sorry to see him leave and can only assume that there is more to it than meets the eye.

Numerous times throughout this year? Source?

It's literally in the article we were discussing.

"Cutler, 24, has resisted several opportunities to re-sign with the Lions this year during a season where he was stuck in the NEAFL."

Why does offering a contract have anything to do with him not playing? Every one can see he’s got the tools to be very good but at this stage he’s a c grade at best player.

The team was incredibly settled for the year and cutler didn’t exactly dominate in the NEAFL and demand selection.

Fair point re Tom's form-line. Why do you think the Lions offered him a contract if they didn't rate him for selection?

Yep exactly what I was saying. The vibe of the posts aimed at the Bulldogs fella was that he has put in size, is being called silk jnr etc etc. i think he is very tradeable which seemed to be against the grain. Was only an opinion.

Lol, literally no one said otherwise...what is it with ‘opinions’ on this thread?

I think it’s all between the ears for Tom.

I was at a NEAFL game standing near the Lions bench and when Cutler came off he was put straight onto the phone to the coaches up in the box. (This was at South Pine). I only heard the Cutler end of the conversation but it wasn’t hard to surmise that at the other end a coach was telling Tom that he wasn’t doing what was asked of him. No other player got a conversation like that.

My impression was that it had to do with positional play and two way running.

There is no doubt he has talent but I think in the modern game, structures and team patterns can negate talent to some extent. So players need more, especially defensively. And defensive effort and structure is the key element that coaches know they have to get right. One weak link in a defensive structure can be the undoing of a team.

We obviously think those things can be worked on or I would imagine we wouldn’t have offered him a contract. It is up to him to take it or decide to move on.

100% agree AFLQLD re: Tom's mind set.
Not 100% sure that Tom has an offer to stay on the table right at this time and not sure that an offer has been there for a few months now.

Sorry to intrude, interested in Cutler. Does he play an inside mid role? It's a massive gap in our list. And what do you think is fair compensation?

Fantastic season btw. Lions are my second team so I was really pleased to see the progression, especially from Hipwood and Andrews. It would be great to meet the Lions in a final.

Cutler is one of the more outside players I've seen, but I don't think that's because he's afraid of the contest, more that he's very much an outside damage type of player.

Cutler is a talent, he played a bunch of games last year. There are more than 22 spots on a list, and you need genuine depth to be a contender. Cutler falls in this area for us, so despite not getting a look in this year, im not surprised we would want to still keep him.

From his perspective, he might be able to play a different role or be asked to do better things that suits him more in another team where he can breakout a bit. Every possible chance that if he moves on he plays some great footy next year, but that doesn't mean he would play like that with us if he stayed.

We are a systems based team, and some players just dont fit in a system.

Not really, he a decent size both height and weight, but is much more of a flanker type. HB/HF/Wing. He is an offensive type player, and probably doesnt get games because of his inability to adhere to the defensive side of his role. That isnt to say he is a seagull or soft or anything, i think he just has natural offensive instincts. Has good speed and a is a thumping 60m kick. I think if used the right way he can be a player.

For us i dont think he fits into our HF or HB lines, and our wing positions are very system defense based which doesn't suit him. He played a good amount of games last year though, but not this year with our excellent injury list.

I think a mid to late second round draft pick is fair compensation for him. A cpl of early third round picks, maybe.

I think this might sum it up pretty well. It is less a criticism of Cutler’s ability and more a reflection of how to fit him into a structure well.
