Reminder that Buckenara doesn't care at all about being correct, he cares about getting clicks.

Give a relatively stock standard list and just throw in some terrible and baseless picks to generate views.

It is smart journalism but also gives him 0 credibility. Just ignore it

Phillips at 13 is just bat shit crazy. Most ITK say he will go at 5 to GC if still available

Yep and read around at all the outrage over it, they got what they wanted from it. He will almost certainly be taken by the Suns if not already before that but they don't care at all.

I'm all aboard the Phillips2Longbombtonooneintheforward50 train for 2021.

I’m sure he has just as much of a clue as the BF draft watchers that people seem to anchor their views on. I also expect clubs talent orders to be a bit more varied than the amateur ones that all seem to converge over time.
Note - this was his rankings not a phantom draft. So if he doesn’t rate Phillips that’s just his view.

From all the reading I’ve been able to gather, the closest Phillips comparison I’ve been able to draw a line to who’s played in Hawks colours is Crawf - is this about right or am I off base a little?
Looks and runs and plays a lot like Crawf can he kick those long running goals?

I voted for Hollands early in the piece, but as lots on here have now realized the huge swing in Phillips favor.
If I was to vote again would be Phillip's right away no hesitations.
Even if we don't take him, I'm going to predict he's going to give Rowell a huge nudge for the Rising Star in 2021!

Probably not Crawf. He could play as a marking forward, defender or Wingman as well.

Phillips is exceptionally good at what he does. But at this stage his versatility is very much a question mark. That's not to say peeps wouldn't have been saying that exact same thing about Mitchell during his draft year.

Yep - also big question mark as well as how effective he’ll be vs other teams best mids at afl level at his size and skills. Can’t really play anywhere else other then inside mid (ie is not like Serong who was a dangerous forward). Playing no1 mid is a bloody hard gig at afl level. Pick 4 seems a big price for a 180cm potentially one dimensional inside mid.

Last year he was the 3rd mid after Rowell and Anderson - pretty handy teammates. Would have been interesting to see how he went this year.

How he would've gone this year is the great unknown - if he had continued on the trajectory of Rowell we'll be laughing at Pick 4. His underage year was very similar to that of Rowell although they have some differences (Rowell is more of a bull but Phillips has better spread).

I also think Phillips has the flexibility to play across half-back although he currently can't rest forward.

C: Tom Phillips ✅, Will Phillips?, Ed Phillips?

Get it done, Wright. :$:thumbsu:

His kicking isn't there yet if he's going to be setting up play off half back. He is a hell of a player, and I'm not knocking his overall package. But his kicking is in question imo in terms of penetration and technique. It's come up from those watching him more closely that he misses the odd target, and lacks penetration.

Anyone can overcome anything to a point, and I'd guess kicking would be something I'd back a player to transform as easily as any other aspect of the game.

But right now, that would be a stretch imo (him playing off half back).

He's a hell of a ball winner, and a bull as well in the way he powers through contests in those highlights (he might even be taller than Rowell by a cm or two). Rowell a much bigger and better kick though.

Nah we'd be screwed

He is a year younger than them though which is probably why he was third in line

I agree with what you're saying but I do think he could still spend some minutes at HB if required. Phillips has an unorthodox kicking technique which costs him penetration and accuracy over long distances. But despite the knock on his disposal (which is warranted) the technique seems to work well at hitting targets within 20-35 metres. His handballing is also elite. Despite the lack of penetration, I think his speed and endurance can see him rest across half-back and generate run when playing within his limitations although I wouldn’t be trusting him with the long slicing kicks.

If we do draft him I hope he follows Sammy Mitchell around at every opportunity to try and improve his disposal like Mitch did. By all reports he has the work ethic and if he improves his kicking he's almost the perfect midfielder bar size.

Definitely agree there. If he could develop Mitchell standard disposal off both feet to go with Sam's football IQ he'd be a boom recruit for a long time.

I've shyed away from the thought process of drafting another kid that could turn into a Sammy like player. I thought this was possible with Lovell and was really disappointed when he never made it. Players are players and I've stopped considering particular traits as a sign so and so will go on to replicate another.

But is does happen just look at Tom, Lachie and Diesel. Those 2 took all the advice Diesel had to offer and turn there careers from good to great.

Maybe I had it wrong and it isn't the skills and traits that help a player replicate a great but a similar work ethic.

No question Phillips should be a top 5 pick and if we identified he has the best work ethic amount potential players at our selection he should be the choice.

I am a bit disappointed I'm not reading similar write ups about Hollands because as a player type he is right now he compliments our 22 perfectly. But as I said months ago if we're not confident in Hollands I'd want Phillips.

I like the idea of Phillips because he seems to ooze the most leadership potential out of the top available candidates.

Get our young leaders right, and then we can take more risks on talent that aren't as levelled headed.
