Simmo retiring and Nic Newman only getting a one-year extensions tells me the club is pretty confident if signing Williams and/or Saad.
I suspect the Newman one year deal is due to him coming back from his knee injury, if he gets through next year alright will be a different story.

Confuses me as there is definitely a role for him at Carlton as a pressure forward or tagger. Not sure what is to be gained for him leaving unless a bigger contract ??
Sometimes the right thing to do is to move on. I get the feeling this is rightfully one of those times. I won't begrudge him in the slightest if he chooses to go elsewhere.

So - That leaves us with the following still out of contract; Kennedy, Betts, Macreadie, Polson, Williamson, Phillips, Owies and Moore.

Williamson a must-have.
Macreadie a should have.
Phillips and Kennedy, a wait and see.

Is Setterfield coming OOC?
Would love to see a Willo re-signing too.

Honey and Cottrell (1 yr rookie contract), Murph, Ed, Newman and Cas on one year deals. Plowman on a 3 year deal. Marchbank 2 year deal. Philip on a 2 year extension.

Gibbons onto the senior list.
I swear there is a rule in our media dept that they must use the most unflattering pics of Ed available at all times.

JSOS plays in front of McGovern every day of the week.. If he leaves its because of the fall out the club has had with his dad and he is just bitter about that... which would be a shame to have the family out of our club.. But SOS has had fallings out with the club before and we have moved on.. I was hoping this wouldnt effect Jack but perhaps it has..

If and its a big if, this is accurate and Jack wants out, it will make me question how legit his injury was this year and if he had simply cracked the sads and refused to play for us.. I hope this isnt true but you just never know.

I have Setterfield signed until 2022, but now can't recall where I got that from.
Yes........Williamson is he one we should nail soon enough.

Let's say we get Williams.
Which two other players do people think would serve us best from some of the names thrown up?
Let's imagine we know what we have to give up for them, so who are the two that would serve us best and what we need most?

Saad.....Taranto.....Wright.....Witherden....Merrett.....BCrouch.....Wines.....Caldwell.....Perryman?

Yep Graham is the one we really need, hard as a cats head, can play inside/outside, wing or forward, great disposal, the man that Riewoldt nominated as his preferred player to kick to him, mainly used in defensive type roles by Richmond and has huge upside as an offensive weapon, a direct replacement for both Ed and Murph as he has a good mix of both. Get him it’s a game changer imo.
I am going to put it this way: Graham is able to play the way he does at Richmond because he has Prestia, Martin, Cotchin, Edwards, Houli, Caddy, Bolton, and even players like Castagna getting the ball. He's surrounded by inside and (mainly) outside ball magnets who are more than content to share it around.

Jack Graham has only averaged - max - 17 possessions a game in a single year ever. While getting someone who has never averaged less than 5.9 tackles a game across a season (except this year, with shortened quarters) would be great, I think we actually need more contributors getting the ball than we do just pressure. We'd essentially be replacing Ed with him:

... and hoping that he makes up for this shortcomings in this comparison in future years; he's getting the ball 5 times less, earns less clearances, 4.1 less effective disposals a game; this would really, really hurt us in both the short and medium terms.

Now, it could happen, but it entirely depends on price. If they demand a first for him, I'm out and that's it.

Not sure about this quote regarding the current non defensive runner, non tackler and short steps guy

"A key pillar in the Carlton midfield from the day he was selected with the first overall pick in the 2005 NAB AFL Draft, Murphy will now further cement his legacy as one of the Club’s modern-day greats."
What a sad post. The unnecessary cheap shots at our own players are becoming increasingly tiresome

Its reported that North would pay the bulk of Polec salary in return for a decent draft pick.. Our 2nd would prob get it done.. I am wary purely because it would be his 4th club.. but apart from that we could do far worse with 2nd runder who will come for free.

I reckon Jye Caldwell would be a terrific get. Why not get try to get this young gun. 20 next week, has great speed and love to tackle. Would get along well with our other country boy's. He is a Bendigo lad.

I reckon Ed showed signs this year of losing half a yard of pace off the mark .... which is problematic for the shut down role that he's played so well over the years.

I wonder if the interest in Graham is specifically for the midfield shut-down role and occasionally impact going in the other direction.

Think we need to be planning for who takes Ed's role on. (and it's not going to be JSOS by the looks of things) Not sure there's anyone obvious on the list right now.

I agree that we need to make plans for that defensive mid. My problem with Graham would be completely mitigated if we got as well Williams, Merrett and/or Viney; diverse midfield accumulators with defensive upside.

If we can create a situation in which he doesn't need to get 20+ possessions to influence a match, I'm more than content to get him in. But to this point, we don't just need what he provides, we need more possessions, more kicking quality, more tackles, more km's in legs. We don't just need tackling and defensive positioning. We need to add to the 22, rather than just replacing what we've already got.

Good to see this boards fave whipping boy Plow get another 3 years

Does he make mistakes ? Yes
Does he get the most dangerous forward, big and small, nearly every week ? Also yes

Happy to have him in Navy 💙

Yeah the melts should be great - anyone who bags him week in/week out have never played footy as a backman.

Christ almighty I hope we stay well away from Polec.

He is a C+/B- player on A grade money who is only effective when the game is on his clubs terms. Has no ability defensively, huge front runner and is as soft as out outside players come. Terrified of any contact or close checking.
He is an outside player, there is a place for them ala Hill, Smith and Polec two years ago have been vital players also why we drafted LOB.
Defensively his numbers are also better then Walsh and Newnes.

haha yeah. All three play for mine, and I'd have all three in the team ahead of Newman/Murph/Gibbons/Newnes/Betts/Pitto (obviously not like-for-like replacements there, but shifting other players around, etc)
If we can disagree, then I'm sure the selection committee can too. I still rate all three of those players mentioned, I just think that if you go like for like you can replace:
SPS with Saad
Plowman with Marchbank

Heavily disagree with Pitto though, he's a middle of the pack ruckman who never really gets smashed. He's a handy addition to our team and allows us to push Casboult out in favor of TDK.

To think though, 2-3 years ago I'd say we'd all be in agreeance as to who our best 22 is. Depth is a good problem to have.

Mostly agree. I'm just thinking that it's Ed or Graham - not Ed and Graham in best 22. Graham is young - I think he has the capacity to lift his possession numbers.

Cycling Martin and Williams through stoppages makes us a lot more interesting. The 'mix' already looks a lot better with Williams addition.

Saad and Taranto

For the 'pressure forward' role i'd hope we have eyes on a quicker, smaller player.
As a tagger...really? He only tagged Fyfe...that's it.

I can see how he might get squeezed out of the best 22...however the disappointing thing is McGovern has taken his '3rd tall' spot and isn't really performing while on a big contract (funnily enough given to him by JSOS' dad). Might have been better if we didn't get McGovern and had JSOS playing that role for cheaper.

SOS pushed out by Liddle, BSOS delisted and JSOS traded...would be a disappointing end to the Silvagni legacy at Carlton tbh.
Shattering news, we will live to regret it if we lose JSOS just as we will live to regret the removal of his father, and at a time when we need Carlton people around the club, disappointing to say the least. 🤬🤬🤬🤬

Reports coming in that the following re-signings are set to be announced today:
Casboult - 1YR
Marchbank - 2YR

Really hoping Williamson gets announced, don't think there is anyone else I am desperate to retain. Great to see so many Blues signing on so soon after the season.
